Best overall for a community that wants the least maintenance: Assetto Servers’ Plugin Manager. It installs managed packages for timing, drift, moderation, Discord auditing, weather, and race challenges through ServerHub. Best for self-hosting and deeper control: AssettoServer, whose dedicated-server implementation adds Steam authentication, AI traffic, dynamic weather support, and an experimental plugin interface. Best for custom automation: Assetto Server Manager when you already operate that platform and can use its executable-plugin or premium Lua-hook system.
There is no published independent benchmark or adoption study that proves one option is universally “best.” The practical choice depends on whether you value managed updates, self-hosted control, packaged leaderboard features, weather, moderation, or your own scripts. Client compatibility is a hard requirement: Steam authentication needs Content Support Patch (CSP) 0.1.75 or newer and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573 or newer; dynamic-weather features need CSP 0.1.76 or newer.

- Manager extensions: a server-management application loads executable plugins or scripts through its own configuration and hook system.
Client-side CSP Python and Lua apps are different. They can control local track-condition displays, mirrors, or other client functions, but they are not server plugins. A server feature may still require a matching CSP installation on every joining client.
Quick comparison
| Option | Installation model | Strongest use | Extensibility | Important requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assetto Servers Plugin Manager | Managed through ServerHub | Packaged timing, drift, moderation, Discord, weather, and race features | Choose from published packages; the panel handles files and configuration | An activated Discord Bot Plan is required for managed installation |
| AssettoServer | Self-hosted dedicated-server implementation | Steam authentication, AI traffic, dynamic weather, and operator-controlled infrastructure | Experimental server-plugin interface plus documented weather plugins | Steam authentication needs CSP 0.1.75+ and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573+; dynamic weather needs CSP 0.1.76+ |
| Assetto Server Manager | Self-managed files and configuration | Custom automation for leagues already using Server Manager | External executable plugins, plugin chaining, and premium Lua hooks | Lua must be enabled in config.yml; scripts go in server-manager/plugins |
Assetto Servers Plugin Manager: the convenience choice
An August 18, 2026 guide from Assetto Servers says its Plugin Manager displays “both first-party managed packages and plugins included with AssettoServer.” That makes it the most straightforward route when you want a feature selected from a web panel rather than a collection of files maintained by hand.
Packages available in the manager
| Package | What it is intended to provide | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| ServerHub Connection | Connection between the running server and the ServerHub management environment | Operators who want the server represented and controlled in the hosting panel |
| Leaderboard Timing | Timing-oriented leaderboard functionality | Track-day and racing communities that need recorded lap or session results |
| Leaderboard Drift | Drift-oriented leaderboard functionality | Drift servers that want rankings separate from circuit timing |
| Auto Moderation | Automated moderation features | Communities that need routine rule enforcement without manually watching every session |
| Discord Audit | Discord-connected auditing or event records | Staff teams that use Discord as their operational log |
| Live Weather | Live-weather behavior for the managed server | Servers whose schedule calls for changing conditions rather than a fixed preset |
| Race Challenge | Race-challenge functionality | Organizers who want structured challenges in addition to ordinary sessions |
The package names describe their roles, but the guide does not publish a common performance benchmark, ranking accuracy test, or market-share figure. Treat this list as a capability map, not proof that one package is faster or more reliable than another.
What managed installation changes
Managed installation requires an activated Discord Bot Plan. The panel applies plugin-file or configuration changes by restarting a running server. Schedule those changes between events: a configuration save is not a hot reload if the server must restart to apply it.
- Confirm that the server is attached to the ServerHub account and that the required Discord Bot Plan is active.
- Open the server’s Plugin Manager in ServerHub and review the available managed packages.
- Select only the package needed for the current objective. For example, choose timing for circuit rankings or drift for drift rankings rather than enabling every package at once.
- Apply the package and configuration changes during a maintenance window. Expect a restart when the panel changes plugin files or settings.
- After the server returns, check the panel status, review the server log, and join with a test account. Confirm that the intended leaderboard, moderation, Discord, weather, or challenge behavior appears before announcing the change.
When this option is the right answer
Choose the Plugin Manager when your priority is a repeatable, web-managed workflow and your team does not want to copy plugin files, maintain a custom configuration tree, or develop code. It is particularly suitable for a Discord-centered community that wants packaged timing, drift, auditing, and moderation features in one control surface.

AssettoServer: self-hosted control and weather extensibility
AssettoServer is a dedicated-server implementation rather than a single-purpose add-on. Its documentation describes Steam authentication, AI traffic, dynamic-weather support, built-in features controlled through extra_cfg.yml, and an experimental plugin interface: “There is an experimental plugin interface for adding functionality to the server.” The word experimental matters. It signals useful extensibility, but also a larger compatibility and maintenance responsibility than a fully managed package.
Steam authentication
AssettoServer’s Steam-authentication flow uses the Steam Auth API to prevent SteamID spoofing. The session-ticket flow requires CSP 0.1.75 or newer on clients and Content Manager version 0.8.2297.38573 or newer. If either prerequisite is missing, authentication-related testing should stop until the client installation is upgraded; changing unrelated server settings will not compensate for an unsupported client.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDynamic weather and the three documented weather plugins
Dynamic weather uses CSP WeatherFX v1. AssettoServer documents three weather plugins:
- LiveWeatherPlugin: obtains realtime weather data from OpenWeatherMap.
- RandomWeatherPlugin: selects weather randomly.
- VotingWeatherPlugin: lets players vote on the weather.
Dynamic-weather features require CSP 0.1.76 or newer. This is a separate threshold from Steam authentication: a client on CSP 0.1.75 may satisfy the authentication requirement but still be below the documented version for dynamic weather.
Why choose AssettoServer
- Security control: Steam Auth API validation addresses SteamID spoofing rather than relying only on a name or manually supplied identifier.
- Traffic scenarios: AI traffic is part of the implementation’s documented feature set.
- Weather choice: operators can select realtime, random, or player-voted weather behavior instead of treating weather as one fixed preset.
- Self-hosting: files, restarts, configuration, and rollbacks remain under the operator’s control.
- Further development: the experimental plugin interface can support functionality beyond the documented built-ins, provided the operator accepts the testing burden.
AssettoServer operating procedure
- Confirm the client matrix before enabling a feature: CSP 0.1.75+ and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573+ for Steam authentication; CSP 0.1.76+ for dynamic weather.
- Install or update the dedicated-server implementation in the location used by your server operation, keeping a copy of the current configuration so you can roll back.
- Use
extra_cfg.ymlfor the built-in settings documented by AssettoServer. Make one functional change at a time instead of changing authentication, weather, and traffic simultaneously. - Select the weather plugin that matches the event design: realtime data for a live-condition concept, random selection for unpredictability, or voting for player participation.
- Restart the server and inspect its startup output for plugin-loading or configuration errors.
- Join with a client that meets the relevant CSP and Content Manager versions. Test the actual behavior in a short private session before exposing it to the public server.
- Record the version of the server implementation, plugin, CSP, and Content Manager used for the successful test. That record makes future updates and rollback decisions safer.
Assetto Server Manager: custom scripts and automation
Assetto Server Manager is the strongest fit when a league already uses that manager and needs its own automation rather than another packaged feature. Its documented extension points include external executable plugins, plugin chaining, and Lua scripts.

Lua support
The project’s guide states: “Lua plugins are a premium Server Manager feature!” Lua scripts run through hooks, are enabled with lua: enabled: true in config.yml, and are loaded from the server-manager/plugins folder.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Server Manager
config.ymlused by the server instance. - Set the Lua section to
lua: enabled: trueexactly as documented. - Place the Lua plugin files in
server-manager/plugins. - Restart the manager or server process according to your normal deployment procedure so the hook loader runs again.
- Review startup output and test the hook in a private session. A script that loads successfully may still need event-specific testing.
The documentation also describes external executable plugins and chaining. Use those mechanisms when the automation already exists as a separate process or when one plugin’s output must feed another. Keep the chain small while diagnosing failures: adding several executables at once makes it difficult to identify which process or hand-off failed.
When Server Manager is preferable
Choose this route when your staff already understands Server Manager’s configuration and deployment model, or when the requirement is genuinely custom: a league workflow, event hook, or integration that does not match the published managed packages. The trade-off is operational ownership. You must maintain the files, configuration, process startup, updates, and recovery plan yourself, and Lua availability depends on the premium feature.
Do not confuse CSP apps with server plugins
CSP documentation describes Python-app and Lua-app APIs, including track-condition controls and mirror functions. Those are client-side app APIs. Installing one on a driver’s computer does not install a server plugin, add server moderation, or create a shared leaderboard by itself.
Use a CSP app when the feature belongs in the client interface or local driving experience. Use AssettoServer, Server Manager, or a managed package when the feature must coordinate players, enforce rules, store shared results, or alter server-wide behavior. If a server feature depends on WeatherFX or another CSP capability, publish the required client version clearly so players are not troubleshooting a server problem with an outdated installation.

Installation and change-management checklist
Regardless of the platform, treat a plugin change as a deployment rather than a toggle. The safest sequence is deliberately conservative.
- Define one outcome. Write down whether you are adding timing, drift scoring, moderation, auditing, weather, authentication, traffic, or custom automation.
- Check prerequisites. For managed packages, confirm the required plan. For AssettoServer, check CSP and Content Manager versions. For Server Manager, confirm that Lua is available if the script depends on it.
- Back up configuration. Keep the current configuration and plugin files so the previous working state can be restored.
- Change one component. Do not combine a new weather plugin with an authentication change and a script migration in the same restart.
- Restart intentionally. Managed panels may restart the server automatically when plugin files or configuration change; self-hosted systems require the operator to perform the normal restart.
- Read startup output. Check that the intended component loaded and that no configuration or dependency error appeared.
- Test with a real client. Join, run the relevant session, and verify the visible result: a leaderboard entry, moderation action, Discord record, weather transition, authenticated session, traffic behavior, or script hook.
- Observe a complete event. A plugin can load successfully yet fail during a race transition, vote, weather update, or chained process hand-off.
- Document the working versions. Record server, plugin, CSP, Content Manager, and configuration versions so staff can reproduce the setup.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Players cannot authenticate after enabling Steam authentication
Check the client prerequisites first: CSP must be 0.1.75 or newer and Content Manager must be 0.8.2297.38573 or newer for the documented session-ticket flow. Confirm that the server restarted with the intended configuration, then test with a known-good client before changing other settings.
Dynamic weather does not appear
Verify CSP 0.1.76 or newer and CSP WeatherFX v1 support. Confirm that the selected weather plugin is the one configured for the server: LiveWeatherPlugin, RandomWeatherPlugin, or VotingWeatherPlugin. Check startup output and perform a short private session; do not assume that successful server startup proves that clients can display the transition.
A managed package appears installed but the old behavior remains
Remember that the managed panel restarts a running server when plugin files or configuration change. Wait for the restart to complete, verify the panel’s running status, and join a fresh session. If the behavior still does not change, return to the package configuration and test only that package.

An executable plugin chain fails
Run each executable independently, confirm its expected input and output, and add the next process only after the previous one works. Keep the original files and configuration available so you can return to the last known-good chain.
Maintenance, compatibility, and operational risk
Managed installation reduces file-management work but does not remove event planning: a package update or configuration change can restart a live server. Self-hosted AssettoServer and Server Manager provide more control, but the operator owns version selection, backups, restarts, and rollback.
- Stage updates: test on a private or maintenance server before changing a public event server.
- Publish client requirements: especially CSP and Content Manager versions for Steam authentication and weather.
- Change one thing at a time: this is the fastest way to identify a plugin conflict or incompatible client feature.
- Keep a rollback point: save the last working configuration and plugin set before every update.
- Monitor after restart: inspect status and logs, then complete an actual join and session test.
- Plan for premium dependencies: Server Manager Lua requires the premium feature, while managed installation requires an activated Discord Bot Plan.
Costs and licensing facts established for these options
The available documentation establishes two access requirements but does not state prices: Assetto Servers’ managed installation requires an activated Discord Bot Plan, and Lua plugins are a premium Server Manager feature. Do not treat either requirement as a quoted subscription amount. AssettoServer’s documentation describes its implementation and plugin interface but does not provide a price in the material available here.
Bottom-line selection
Use Assetto Servers’ Plugin Manager if your priority is a managed workflow with packaged timing, drift, moderation, Discord audit, weather, and race-challenge options. Use AssettoServer if you want self-hosted control, Steam-authentication safeguards, AI traffic, and a choice among realtime, random, or voted weather, while accepting an experimental plugin interface and client-version gating. Use Assetto Server Manager if your league already runs it and needs custom executable or Lua automation. Whichever path you choose, enable one change at a time, restart deliberately, read the startup output, and verify a real client session before putting the feature in front of your community.
