Confirm the policy’s covered losses, limits, exclusions, deductible, valuation method, and evidence requirements before relying on that coverage. A receipt or appraisal can help establish what you own, but neither guarantees a particular claim payment.
Start by documenting the phone and its modifications
Make a record that lets an insurer identify both the original iPhone and what changed. Keep these materials together with your policy and claim records:

- The original purchase receipt, exact iPhone model, and storage configuration.
- The serial number and IMEI. Store these privately; do not publish them.
- Clear, dated photos from multiple angles before and after each modification, if available.
- Itemized invoices and receipts for parts and labor, with the work date and the name of the person or business that performed it.
- A precise description of each change: for example, a cosmetic finish, an attached accessory, a replacement component, or an internal hardware change.
- Receipts and, if available, removed original parts. These can help show what was replaced.
Ask the insurer which evidence it accepts. It may request photos or video, a detailed description, invoices, a bill of sale, or a professional appraisal; requirements depend on the carrier, policy, and item.

Ask your insurer what coverage actually applies
Begin with your homeowners or renters insurer. A general personal-property limit does not necessarily equal the amount available for this particular phone: the policy may have item limits, sublimits, or exclusions. Ask whether coverage applies to the customized phone and each added component, and whether it follows the phone when you take it away from home.

Ask whether the insurer offers an electronics option or scheduled personal property endorsement that could apply. Availability does not mean every phone or modification qualifies. For example, Progressive describes scheduling as an option for property that may not be fully protected by a general personal-property limit, while USAA describes an electronics coverage option and cautions that it does not cover every electronic item. Those are US insurer examples, not promises of coverage; the policy and endorsement terms control. Progressive’s scheduled personal property guidance and USAA’s electronics coverage information describe their own offerings.
Request written confirmation that identifies the phone and clarifies whether the modifications are included. Also ask for the effective date and the answers to these specific questions:

- Which losses are covered: theft, accidental damage, loss, fire, or other causes?
- Does protection apply away from home, and are there geographic limits?
- How will the phone and modifications be valued after a covered loss: replacement cost, actual cash value, a scheduled amount, or another policy-defined basis?
- What is the maximum amount payable, and what deductible applies?
- Are modifications, particular parts, or business use excluded or restricted?
- What documentation or appraisal is required, and how are repairs or replacements handled?
Do not assume the phone’s original price plus modification invoices equals the claim payment. The insurer’s valuation method and policy limits determine what may be payable.

An appraisal is one possible form of evidence, not a universal requirement or a guaranteed valuation method for a customized iPhone. Ask your insurer whether it wants one, who may prepare it, and what information the appraisal must include.

Requirements can differ even within one insurer’s materials. Progressive says its affiliated Progressive Home carrier may ask for an appraisal or bill of sale and a clear photo for certain items valued at $5,000 or more; for items below that amount, it typically asks for a description. This is a Progressive-specific example from its 2025 page update, not a general insurance threshold. Progressive’s documentation guidance explains the example.

AppleCare+ is an Apple service plan, not confirmation that an insurer recognizes the extra value of custom work or components. Apple says the iPhone must be listed on the plan confirmation. Its current US terms exclude certain repair claims if someone other than Apple or an authorized representative has opened, serviced, modified, or altered the device, and warn that “Installation of third-party parts may affect your coverage.” The terms apply to Apple’s service plan; they do not determine homeowners or renters insurance coverage. Update your records when the phone changes
- Before a new modification, save current photos and records of the phone’s model, condition, and existing components.
- After the work, add dated photos, itemized receipts, and a description of the parts and labor.
- Notify the insurer if the policy requires it or if the phone’s configuration or value changes. Ask for updated written confirmation.
- Keep the response, policy documents, and evidence together, and check that the confirmed coverage remains in effect from the stated date.
