A new Game Informer cover story highlights five notable details about Grand Theft Auto VI: its six named regions, more localized weather, a reported 170 animal species, a broader range of NPC appearances and animations, and new robbery and wanted-system mechanics. The details below come from TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 summary of the cover story, not an independent hands-on test. 1. GTA 6’s map spans six named regions
TechRadar’s account of the Game Informer cover story names six parts of Leonida: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut said, “This new world is different,” and described a focus on making interiors and exteriors feel connected and detailed.

TechRadar also describes the map as twice the size of GTA V’s. That size comparison is TechRadar’s report, rather than a separately verified measurement published on Rockstar’s official game page. Garbut’s broader point, as quoted by TechRadar, is that the world is intended to feel like a cohesive place rather than a collection of isolated landmarks.

The reported weather details go beyond changing skies: TechRadar describes localized showers and storms, puddles that remain after rain, rainbows, and lighting that shifts with conditions. Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s VP of art for lighting and rendering, said the weather system had been re-engineered to be “much more localized and persistent.”

Shepherd also described “fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map.” In the report, he contrasts clear Miami winter skies with the cumulonimbus clouds associated with Florida’s summer and autumn. The aim, as presented in the feature, is for weather and lighting to reflect different conditions across the setting rather than operate as a single uniform backdrop.
3. The game reportedly includes 170 animal species
TechRadar reports that GTA VI includes 170 animal species, among them more than 60 kinds of birds and over 30 land mammals, as well as fish and reptiles. The examples named include flamingos, pelicans, and alligators. These are figures attributed to Rockstar through the Game Informer coverage as summarized by TechRadar; they are not third-party counts.

Michael Kane, Rockstar’s VP of dynamic art, said the team wanted to represent Florida’s animal life across Leonida’s urban, rural, aquatic, and wetland environments. TechRadar quotes him saying that teams researched animals to get their appearance and movement right. The reported range fits the game’s mix of city, coast, and swamp settings, but the article does not establish how much of that wildlife players will encounter in any particular area.

According to TechRadar, the game will have more than 600,000 combined NPC animations. The same report describes a wider range of character heights, skin and body types, facial features, hairstyles, fashion, and tattoos, along with clothing that can show wear suited to its context.

Kane said Rockstar had created “the biggest range of garments and accessories we’ve ever made,” supported by realistic materials. The report identifies shoes, watches, sunglasses, and hats as details treated as meaningful to a character’s culture and region. The animation figure and descriptions are feature-reported claims, not a measure of how many animations players will notice in a typical session.

TechRadar’s summary says players can control Lucia or Jason during robberies and describes a six-star Wanted system paired with a new “Heat” system. Police may gather identifying information about a character’s appearance and vehicle, so changing clothes or cars—and splitting up—can affect an escape plan.

The report also says that if one protagonist is arrested while the other gets away, the sequence can still end on a Busted screen. These mechanics are described in the Game Informer coverage as summarized by TechRadar; Rockstar’s official game page does not independently detail them.
Release date, platforms, and boxed copies
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It presents the story around Jason and Lucia, whose failed score draws them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. The page also features an extended look and the first two trailers.
For buyers, Rockstar Support’s editions and physical release information, last updated August 18, 2026, describes Standard and Ultimate Editions. The physical version comes in a box with a digital download code; it does not include a disc. Code redemption can depend on the region linked to the platform account, so Rockstar advises buying from a retailer in the same country as the account to avoid activation problems.
