You can reinstall an Xbox game from disc without deliberately erasing its saved progress: the installed game and its save data are separate. Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive, keep the disc available if the game requires it to launch, and sign in to the Xbox profile that holds your progress. Connect to Xbox network and let any save synchronization finish before playing or responding to a sync conflict.
Check that your Xbox can use game discs
This disc-install process applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles with an optical drive. Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot install or launch a game from a physical disc. Confirm your exact console model before proceeding.

Microsoft also announced a disc-based entitlement feature on Xbox One and Xbox Series X in its August 26, 2026, Xbox Wire article, noting that it applies to most—not all—disc-based games. Install or reinstall the game from disc
- Insert the compatible game disc into the console’s drive.
- Follow the installation prompts shown by the console and allow the game files to install. The exact dashboard route and labels can vary, so follow the prompts on your console rather than relying on an unverified menu path.
- Keep the disc. A game may require its disc to be inserted when you launch it, even after installation.
For backward-compatible games specifically, Microsoft Support says a game on its compatibility list downloads from the disc and that the disc must remain inserted to play. This is not a rule to apply to every Xbox title; check Microsoft’s backward-compatibility guidance.

Let your saved progress sync before playing
- Sign in to the Xbox profile you used for the game and connect the console to Xbox network.
- Launch the installed game and wait for any save synchronization to finish before continuing.
- If the game presents a save conflict, read the choices carefully. Do not choose an option that deletes the data everywhere if your aim is to keep your progress.
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit documentation explains that a title can show an active cloud-download sync dialog; when a device reconnects and cloud data is newer, the title may treat local data as stale and end the game session to synchronize. Know the difference between local deletion and deleting everywhere
Reinstalling game software is different from deleting saved progress. If you see a save-data deletion choice, distinguish removal of a local console copy from permanent deletion across devices and cloud storage. A Microsoft Community answer describes “Delete from console” as removing the local copy and “Delete everywhere” as removing the save from the console, cloud, and other consoles. Because this distinction is described here in a community answer rather than a current step-by-step support article, treat the wording on your own screen as decisive and avoid “Delete everywhere” unless you truly intend permanent removal: Microsoft Community discussion.

If your latest progress does not return
Cloud recovery depends on the save having synchronized. If your most recent progress existed only on the console and never reached the cloud, reinstalling the game cannot guarantee that progress will be restored. Avoid broad save-deletion choices and preserve the console’s current state while you check the game’s support options.
