On most Ubuntu systems, install wkhtmltopdf from Ubuntu’s own package archive: run sudo apt update, then sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf, and confirm it with wkhtmltopdf --version. You do not need a special India-specific package: choose a package for your Ubuntu release and CPU architecture.

Ubuntu’s archive lists wkhtmltopdf for Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04. The exact version, architecture, dependencies, and availability depend on your release and configured repositories; check those details for your own system rather than assuming every Ubuntu installation receives the same package. The archive package is in Universe for the releases covered here. If apt cannot locate it, check whether the appropriate repository is enabled for your Ubuntu release.

Does installation in India require a different package?
No India-specific build is identified in the project’s download options or Ubuntu package records. Package choice is determined by your Ubuntu codename and CPU architecture, not your country. Ubuntu uses configured archive mirrors to retrieve packages; use the mirror configured on your system, but availability or speed of a particular Indian mirror is not established here.

These are separate packaging routes, and a package built for one Ubuntu release should not be assumed to work on another. The Ubuntu archive records Jammy’s source package as 0.12.6-2 and Noble’s package as 0.12.6-2build2; those package identifiers describe the archive builds, not a guarantee that they suit a different release or architecture. On the upstream downloads page, select a package explicitly matching both. The listed Ubuntu builds cover jammy, focal, and bionic; do not infer support for a different release from a similar name.

Install the downloaded local package with apt, which can resolve available dependencies:
sudo apt install ./wkhtmltox_*.deb. Replace the pattern with the actual downloaded filename if needed. -
Verify the executable with
wkhtmltopdf --version.
If apt reports unmet dependencies or an incompatible package, stop rather than forcing installation across releases. The upstream guidance notes that a package can sometimes be extracted when it cannot be installed, but extraction does not supply missing dependencies and is not a routine compatibility fix. Consult the upstream installation guidance and use a build suitable for your system.

For a local HTML file, pass its path and a destination, for example wkhtmltopdf ./page.html ./page.pdf. The conversion depends on the installed build and the HTML content; this basic command does not establish that every modern site or script-heavy page will render identically.
Security warning for server-side use
The wkhtmltopdf project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server you are running it on!” If your application converts user-submitted content, sanitize it and do not treat the converter as safe for arbitrary HTML or JavaScript.
