The project lists installers for Vista or later, but does not state that Windows 11 was specifically tested. Because wkhtmltoimage uses an outdated Qt WebKit engine and the project warns against processing untrusted HTML, confirm it is suitable for your use before putting it into a workflow.
Download the correct Windows build
- Open the official wkhtmltopdf downloads page. Its Windows downloads are hosted through GitHub releases.
- For a typical 64-bit Windows 11 PC, choose the 64-bit Windows installer,
wkhtmltox-0.12.6-1.msvc2015-win64.exe. The page also lists a 32-bit installer and a 7z archive. Use the official project download rather than a third-party download site. - Run the downloaded
.exe. If Windows displays a confirmation prompt, approve it only if you obtained the installer from the official project page. Proceed through the standard installer dialogs and note the destination folder in case you need to call the executable by its full path.
The published installer support range is Vista or later; the project page does not document a Windows 11-specific test or walkthrough. The installer is offered for this platform range, but that is not evidence of a Windows 11 compatibility test.

Verify that the command launches
Open a fresh Command Prompt or PowerShell window and run:
wkhtmltoimage --version
If the command is available, it should print the installed version. The stable release listed by the project is 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020; your local output is the useful check for the build you installed.

To see the installed build’s available options, run:
wkhtmltoimage --help
The project’s command documentation describes itself as autogenerated from the help available from the command-line utility, so the local help output is the practical reference for your installed build.

Fix “not recognized” in Command Prompt or PowerShell
This message usually means Windows cannot find wkhtmltoimage.exe through the current directory or PATH. The project source does not establish that the installer always adds the executable to PATH.
- Find the destination folder you noted during installation and look for
wkhtmltoimage.exe, commonly inside abinfolder. - As a direct check, run the executable by its full path, quoting the path if it contains spaces. For example:
"C:pathtowkhtmltoimage.exe" --version. Replace the example path with the actual location. - If that works and you want to use the short command, add the folder containing
wkhtmltoimage.exeto your user PATH. Add the folder itself, not the executable filename. - Close and reopen Command Prompt or PowerShell, then retry
wkhtmltoimage --version. Existing terminal windows do not automatically acquire PATH changes.
Should you use wkhtmltoimage for a new project?
It can still be relevant when you need to run an existing workflow or render controlled HTML with this specific legacy tool. Installation success only confirms that the executable launches; it does not establish that the renderer is maintained or appropriate for every page.

- Rendering engine: wkhtmltoimage renders HTML into image formats using Qt WebKit. The project says its tools run headlessly and do not require a display service. Its status page says Qt 4 has not been supported since 2015 and its WebKit has not been updated since 2012.
- Dynamic pages: if the page depends on modern or dynamic JavaScript behavior, the project suggests considering Puppeteer.
- Controlled report HTML: the project suggests considering WeasyPrint or the commercial tool Prince for report generation. Treat these as alternatives to investigate, not universal recommendations or claims about price or performance.
- Trust and security: do not process untrusted HTML or unsanitized user-supplied scripts with wkhtmltoimage on a server. The project warns that this can allow complete takeover of the server running the tool.
