Install ULib first, then ULX. You can deploy both addons through the server’s Steam Workshop collection or by extracting their archives into garrysmod/addons. Whichever method you choose, preserve the addon folders and perform a complete server restart—changing the map is not enough. After the restart, verify the installation with ulx help, open the administrator interface with ulx menu, and assign only the groups and permissions your staff need.

What ULib and ULX do
ULib is the library and shared framework that ULX depends on. It provides the functions ULX uses for commands, groups, access checks, and persistent administration data. The ULib documentation states that it requires a working copy of the latest Garry’s Mod.

ULX is the administration addon. It adds moderation commands, group management, command permissions, and an in-game menu. ULX cannot load correctly without a current ULib installation, so installing ULX by itself usually results in missing commands or startup errors.
The dependency order is therefore fixed:
- Install ULib.
- Install ULX.
- Restart the entire server.
- Verify the commands and configure administrators.
Before you start
- Have access to the server’s control panel, file manager, or operating-system account.
- Stop the Garry’s Mod server before changing addon files or Workshop settings.
- Confirm that the server is running a current, working Garry’s Mod installation.
- Choose one deployment method for both addons. Do not install one copy manually and a second copy through Workshop unless you are deliberately removing the duplicate.
- Record the server’s normal start and restart procedure so you can perform a full restart after installation.
ULib’s official Steam Workshop item is 557962238. ULX’s official Steam Workshop item is 557962280. Workshop addons are mounted by the server; individual players do not need to subscribe to these items just to join a server using them.

Choose Workshop or manual installation
Both approaches are supported. The correct choice depends mainly on how you manage the server.

Do not mix methods casually. Duplicate addon copies can make it unclear which files are being loaded and can leave an old version active after you think you updated it.

Install ULib and ULX through Steam Workshop
1. Stop the server
Use the panel’s Stop action or stop the server process from the command line. Installing while the process is running can leave files or Workshop mounts in an incomplete state.
2. Add both Workshop items
In your hosting panel, find the server’s Workshop collection, Workshop addons, or subscribed-content setting. Add these two item IDs:
- ULib:
557962238 - ULX:
557962280
If your panel uses a collection instead of individual IDs, place both items in that collection and assign the collection to this server. Save the setting before starting the server.
3. Check the order and scope
ULib is the prerequisite even when Workshop handles downloading. Make sure both items are assigned to the server, not merely subscribed to by your personal Steam account. The official Workshop listing notes that only servers need to use the addon; joining players do not need individual subscriptions.

4. Start, then fully restart
Start the server so it can obtain and mount the Workshop content. Once the items are available, perform a complete stop-and-start restart using the panel’s restart function or your normal process. A map change alone does not satisfy the installation requirement.
5. Confirm that the server mounted both addons
Read the startup console for addon-loading messages and then continue with the command checks below. If the server starts without any ULX commands, verify the collection assignment and item IDs before changing unrelated settings.
Install from official archives
1. Stop the server and open the Garry’s Mod directory
After stopping the process, open the server’s main Garry’s Mod directory. The destination for both addons is:
garrysmod/addonsIf the addons directory does not exist, create it with that exact name.

Extract the ULib archive directly into garrysmod/addons. Preserve the archive’s directory structure rather than flattening every file into one folder. A correctly extracted ULib installation includes files such as:
garrysmod/addons/ulib/lua/ULib/init.luagarrysmod/addons/ulib/lua/ULib/server/util.luagarrysmod/addons/ulib/lua/autorun/ulib_init.luagarrysmod/addons/ulib/data/ULib/users.txt
The capitalization shown in these paths matters on systems with case-sensitive filesystems.

3. Extract ULX into the same addons directory
Extract the ULX archive into garrysmod/addons as well. The manual layout places ULX under its own addon folder, with files including:
garrysmod/addons/ulx/lua/ulib/modules/ulx_init.luagarrysmod/addons/ulx/lua/ulx/modules/fun.lua
ULX’s folder is separate from ULib’s folder. Do not merge the contents of both archives into a single directory.

Archive programs often create an extra level such as garrysmod/addons/ulib-master/ulib/... or garrysmod/addons/ulx-release/ulx/.... The addon files must be directly beneath their respective addon folders. For example, the path to ulib_init.lua should resolve through addons/ulib/lua/autorun, not through another nested copy of the archive name.
After extraction, browse into each addon folder and confirm that its lua directory is immediately inside that folder. If you see another folder before lua, move the inner addon directory up one level.
5. Start and fully restart
Start the server after both archives are in place, then perform a full restart. TeamUlysses’ ULib instructions explicitly require a full server restart after installing the files; a simple map change will not load the installation reliably. The ULX instructions carry the same restart requirement.
Verify the installation
Run the server-console check
From the server console, run:
ulx helpA working ULX installation responds with its command help rather than an unknown-command error. This check confirms that the server can see ULX and that ULX has loaded far enough to register its commands.

Open the ULX interface
As an administrator in the game, run:
ulx menuThe menu exposes available commands and settings. If the command is accepted but the interface does not appear, check that you are running it as a user with sufficient ULX access and that the client is connected to the same server instance you restarted.
Check the filesystem when commands are missing
For a manual installation, verify the documented files rather than relying only on a file count. The presence of ULib’s lua/autorun/ulib_init.lua, its core Lua files, and the data/ULib/users.txt path is a useful indication that the archive was extracted at the expected level. For ULX, check that lua/ulib/modules/ulx_init.lua is inside the ULX addon directory.
Make your first administrator
Once ulx help works, add staff through the ULX Groups tab in the menu or with the command:
ulx adduser <user> <group>Replace <user> with the player identity accepted by your ULX installation and <group> with the group you intend to assign. The command is deliberately permission-oriented: choose the smallest group that covers the job instead of granting every command immediately.

Use the Groups tab
- Run
ulx menuwhile connected as an administrator. - Open the Groups section.
- Select the player and the intended group.
- Review the commands and settings associated with that group.
- Apply the change, disconnect and reconnect the test account if necessary, and test only the moderation actions that account should have.
Test with a non-owner account
Keep one account outside the highest-privilege group for testing. Confirm that permitted commands work and that restricted commands fail. Testing with the server owner’s account alone can hide an overly broad group configuration because owner-level access may bypass the restrictions you meant to check.

ulx help says the command is unknown
- Confirm that ULib and ULX are both installed; ULX requires ULib.
- Check that the addon folders are directly under
garrysmod/addons, not one directory deeper. - If you used Workshop, verify that both item IDs are assigned to this server’s collection or panel configuration.
- Perform a complete stop-and-start restart. A map change is insufficient.
- Review the startup console for Lua or addon-loading errors before trying unrelated command changes.
ULX loads but reports ULib errors
This usually indicates that ULib is absent, incomplete, or older than the ULX files expect. Remove any duplicate or partial ULib copy, install the current ULib release supported by the project, and restart before testing again. Do not place ULib’s files inside the ULX folder; each addon belongs in its own directory.

The Workshop items appear subscribed, but the server cannot use them
A personal Workshop subscription does not automatically assign content to a dedicated server. Check the server’s collection or hosting-panel setting, confirm both numeric IDs, save the configuration, and restart the server. If the panel downloads content only during startup, allow that startup to finish before judging whether the addons mounted.
The menu command is rejected
ulx menu requires administrator access. First verify ulx help from the server console, then connect with the account you intend to administer and run the menu command there. If that account has not been added to an appropriate group, add it through the Groups tab or with ulx adduser from an account that already has permission.
Changes do not persist
Make sure the server process can write to its Garry’s Mod data directory. ULib stores user data under data/ULib/users.txt; a read-only or misdirected server directory can prevent updates from being saved. Confirm that you are editing the same server instance that players are joining, especially when a control panel manages more than one installation.
Commands work on one server but not another
Compare the two servers’ addon paths, Workshop assignments, and restart procedures. A successful installation on one instance does not copy files or collection settings to another. Check each server independently with ulx help after its own full restart.
Updating without breaking the dependency
For Workshop deployments, use the collection or hosting panel’s normal update process and then restart the server completely. For manual deployments, stop the server, replace the relevant archive contents, check for duplicate old folders, and start again. Keep ULib and ULX aligned: update ULib before or alongside ULX rather than leaving an old library under a newer administration addon.
After every update, repeat the short validation sequence:

- Perform a full restart.
- Run

ulx menuas an administrator. - Test a restricted account before reopening the server to normal play.
Operational and security checklist
- Keep only one active copy of ULib and one active copy of ULX.
- Back up the server’s Garry’s Mod data before replacing manual files or changing group configuration.
- Grant the narrowest practical group to each moderator.
- Test permission changes with an account that is not the server owner.
- Document whether the server uses Workshop or manual deployment so future administrators do not install a second copy.
- After changing files or Workshop subscriptions, always perform a complete restart and run the two command checks.
The reliable installation sequence
For most servers, the shortest dependable path is: stop the server, add ULib (557962238) and ULX (557962280) to the server’s Workshop configuration—or extract both archives directly into garrysmod/addons—verify that the folders are not nested, restart completely, run ulx help, and configure staff with ulx menu or ulx adduser. If ULX is missing afterward, troubleshoot the dependency, folder depth, Workshop assignment, and restart before changing permissions or unrelated server settings.
