A Minecraft server JSON error is fixed by identifying the exact file and parser location first, then repairing a backed-up copy or regenerating only the affected generated file. Do not delete files blindly: whitelist, ban and operator files can be recreated, but doing so removes their entries.

Do not begin by opening every configuration file or repeatedly restarting. A failed start can overwrite logs, regenerate files or obscure the first parser message. If the process is still running, stop it cleanly from the server console with stop. Then preserve the state that produced the error.
- Copy the complete server directory to a dated backup. If storage is limited, at minimum copy the suspect file,
logs/latest.log, any crash report, and the current plugin, mod and datapack directories. - Record the Minecraft version, server implementation (vanilla, Spigot, Paper, Fabric, Forge or NeoForge), Java version if known, and the last change made before the failure.
- Keep the original file unchanged. Make a working copy with a name such as
config.json.work; repairs made only to a copy are reversible. - Capture the full first error block from the console and
latest.log, including the file path, line, column or character number, and the exception name.
Shockbyte’s September 11, 2024 guidance notes that an invalid .json configuration can crash a server or prevent plugins and mods from loading. That is why the original file and log are evidence, not disposable clutter.

Find the first useful parse error
Read the console output and logs/latest.log from the top of the failure, not just the final message such as “server stopped.” Search for JsonParseException, MalformedJsonException, Couldn't parse, Failed to load, Unexpected character, Unterminated string or Trailing data.
The actionable part normally contains a path and a location, for example a configuration filename followed by a line and column. Open that exact file and inspect the reported character and the token immediately before it. Parsers frequently report the position where they finally became unable to continue; a missing comma, quote or closing bracket is often one character earlier.

- Line and column: narrow the search. Count from the beginning of the file in a plain-text editor; do not rely on a word processor that reformats text.
- Exception wording: distinguishes grammar errors from missing fields, invalid values or an incompatible format.
- First occurrence: later “failed to load” and shutdown messages are usually consequences rather than separate faults.
Classify the file before changing it
Ownership determines the safest recovery. A file called config.json is not necessarily a vanilla file; every plugin and mod can choose its own directory and schema.

Spigot describes server.properties as the base for server configuration and lists typed settings such as server-port, level-seed, online-mode, difficulty and generator-settings. Its older defaults are version-specific reference material, not a promise that current releases use identical defaults.

Validate strict JSON on a copy
JSON is a text format defined by a grammar. RFC 8259 states: “A JSON parser MUST accept all texts that conform to the JSON grammar.” A validator can identify the first grammar violation, but validate the copied file rather than the live server file. An online validator is convenient; a local editor or command-line parser keeps private configuration off the internet.
Objects, arrays and separators
- Objects use curly braces:
{...}. Arrays use square brackets:[...]. - Every object name is a quoted string, followed by a colon and its value.
- Commas separate members or array items. There is no comma after the final member.
- Whitespace is allowed around structural characters.
{"name":"Alex","enabled":true,"levels":[1,2,3]}In the example, name is a string, enabled is a Boolean and levels is an array of numbers. These punctuation errors are common:

Allowed values and escaped strings
A JSON value is an object, array, number, string, true, false or null. The literal names are lowercase: true, not True; false, not FALSE; and null, not NULL. Quote text and escape quotation marks, backslashes and control characters inside strings.

Match the symptom to the likely fault

Apply the least destructive repair
- Restore first if possible. Replace the working copy with the last known-good backup made for the same Minecraft and component version. Keep the corrupt file under a separate name for later comparison.
- If editing is necessary, change one thing. Fix the delimiter, quote, escape or value identified by the parser. Do not reformat unrelated sections or convert number, Boolean and string types without documentation.
- Validate again. Run the copied file through a strict JSON parser and compare the result with the component’s documented example or a newly generated file from the same release.
- Install the repaired copy while the server is stopped. Preserve file ownership and permissions, then start the server once and read the new first error rather than assuming success.
- Keep both files until a normal save. Retain the original backup until the server has started, the affected feature has worked, and at least one normal save cycle has completed.
Repair generated vanilla administration files
Whitelist, ban and operator files are generated data, so hand-editing is usually riskier than rebuilding them. Shockbyte warns that deleting these files can clear their contents. If a backup is unavailable, stop the server, move the corrupt file out of the way instead of deleting it, restart, and rebuild only the entries you actually need through console commands.

pardon-ip 203.0.113.10Rebuilding ban data is a security decision: a regenerated file may temporarily omit bans that protected the server. Keep the moved original until you have audited the replacement.

Handle datapacks without risking the world
Datapack JSON is loaded as part of a world, so a broken pack can prevent world loading even when the root server files are fine. Mojang’s Nether release notes document two useful behaviors: a failed datapack reload does not apply the changes, and the server has a --safeMode startup option that loads only the vanilla datapack.
- Read the log for the datapack name and the resource path under its
datadirectory. - Stop the server and rename or remove only that pack, preserving a copy. Do not delete the world or every pack at once.
- If the world still cannot load, add
--safeModeto your normal Java server launch command, for examplejava -jar server.jar --safeMode. Keep your usual memory and other launch arguments as appropriate for your installation. - If safe mode loads the world, the vanilla server and world are usable without the custom pack. Repair or replace the identified pack against the exact Minecraft version, then re-enable it.
- When several packs changed together, add them back one at a time and test a reload or world start after each addition.
Safe mode is an isolation tool, not a permanent configuration. It disables custom datapack content, so gameplay, recipes, functions and advancements supplied by those packs will be absent during the test.
Separate syntax errors from schema and version errors
A formatter only answers “is this legal JSON?” Minecraft still checks what the document means. A syntactically valid file can fail because a required field is absent, a value has the wrong type, an identifier is unknown, or the schema belongs to another release.
- Required field: a component may require a name, type, list or nested object that your file omits.
- Wrong type: a setting documented as a number may not accept a quoted string such as
"10"; a list cannot be replaced with one item. - Unknown identifier: namespace and identifier spelling must match what the installed component registers.
- Version mismatch: datapack formats, plugin options and mod schemas can change with Minecraft or the loader. Compare against documentation for the exact release and implementation.
When a newly installed version creates a fresh file, compare that generated file with your old one field by field. Migrate only documented settings; do not copy obsolete keys simply because they look familiar.
Do not treat server.properties as JSON
server.properties is a key/value properties file, normally one setting per line, not an object enclosed in braces. Do not paste it into a JSON formatter or add commas and quotation marks around every value. Preserve the key names and edit values according to their documented type.

level-seed=If the server reports a properties or EULA load warning on its first launch, follow the Java server setup process: run the server JAR, accept the EULA in eula.txt, then edit server.properties. Those startup messages are not evidence that a JSON file is broken.
Restart, isolate and verify
After the repaired or regenerated file passes validation, start the server with the same implementation and version recorded at the beginning. Verification has three separate parts:
- Startup: confirm the original parse exception is absent from the console and
latest.log. - Reload or load: if the affected component supports a reload, confirm it completes without a new error; for a datapack, confirm the world loads normally.
- Functional test: test the feature represented by the file, such as joining with a whitelisted account, executing an operator command, crafting a datapack recipe or enabling the plugin feature.
When multiple plugins, mods or datapacks changed together, leave all but one disabled and re-enable them one at a time. The first re-enabled component that reproduces the error owns the next investigation. Keep the repaired file and original backup until the server has completed a normal save cycle and the feature has passed its test.

Prevent the next JSON failure
- Make a dated backup before editing, updating a plugin or changing a datapack.
- Use version control or keep an unchanged original beside every hand-maintained JSON file.
- Validate generated or edited JSON before starting a production server.
- Record the Minecraft version, loader or server implementation and component versions with the backup.
- Change one plugin, mod or datapack at a time when possible, then perform a startup and functional test.
- Use a text editor that shows line and column numbers and does not silently add comments, smart quotes or a byte-order mark.
- Keep
latest.logand crash reports from failed starts; the first parse location is more valuable than the final shutdown line.
