On most Samsung Galaxy phones, go to Settings > Software update, tap Download and install or Check for updates, then follow the prompts. The update offered to your phone depends on its model and carrier, so there is no single “latest” version available to every Galaxy at once.
Install an update from your Galaxy phone
- Connect to the internet. Wi-Fi is a practical choice: some carriers require it, and update downloads can be large.
- Open Settings and tap Software update. Depending on the model and software version, the option may instead be called System updates or appear under About device.
- Tap Download and install or Check for updates. If an update is available, follow the on-screen steps to download and install it.
- Before installation, make sure you have enough free storage and at least 50% battery charge, as Samsung advises in its update troubleshooting guidance. Let the process finish and restart the phone when prompted.
Why an update may not appear
A missing update does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Samsung says availability depends on the phone model and carrier, and releases may arrive in waves. Carriers develop and release updates; if you bought an unlocked phone through a carrier, its original carrier may still manage its updates. - Confirm the exact phone model and carrier context.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and check again after some time, since a release may not have reached your device yet.
- If relevant, check whether the original carrier’s SIM is needed.
- If the phone’s update screen still offers nothing, try Samsung Smart Switch on a computer.
Use Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC
Smart Switch is Samsung’s documented computer-based alternative. It can be useful if the phone does not offer the update in Settings or its download repeatedly fails. Samsung describes the process in its US support instructions and Malaysia support instructions.

- Install and open Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows computer.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with a USB data cable and allow Smart Switch to detect it.
- If Smart Switch offers Update, select it and follow the prompts. Keep the phone connected until the process finishes.
If Smart Switch does not detect the phone, check that its USB connection is set to file transfer, then try another USB port, cable, or computer. The cable supplied with the phone may work; a replacement is not necessarily needed. Samsung includes connection troubleshooting in its support guidance.

Fix common update problems
- Not enough storage: Free space as directed by the message on the phone, then try again.
- Interrupted download: Samsung says you may be able to resume it from the notification.
- Smart Switch connection trouble: Check the phone’s USB mode, update or restart the computer as appropriate, and try another port, cable, or computer.
- Phone will not start after a failed update: Samsung says service may be required. Avoid unofficial firmware downloads or improvised flashing steps.
