Esseker can run on an Arma 3 Exile server only when you have a lawful, currently available map package, the exact terrain dependency that package expects, matching client mods, and the correct Exile mission template. The original Steam Workshop listing currently reports that Esseker was removed and is incompatible with Arma 3, so verify a legitimate distribution and its requirements before changing a production server.

Check availability before installing anything
The original Steam Community Workshop description (2015) identifies Esseker as a 169 km² terrain containing approximately 1,480,000 objects. It also warns, “It is not a finished map.” The listing currently reports the item as removed and incompatible with Arma 3. That status matters more than any old installation guide: do not download an unauthorised copy or assume that a historic mirror is safe.

Proceed only if you can obtain the map from a lawful source and that package documents a dependency compatible with your server’s Arma 3 and Exile versions. The Workshop description says Esseker requires either All in Arma Terrain Pack or a CUP Terrains package with Chernarus objects. Different generations of Esseker server packages select different dependencies, so the package documentation is authoritative for your particular build.
Prepare a known-good Exile server
Start with a clean baseline instead of diagnosing a terrain change and an existing server problem at the same time. The Exile community tutorial’s first instruction is: “Please, make sure that your vanilla server with Altis does function correctly.”

- Start the current Altis Exile mission successfully.
- Confirm that clients can connect with the server’s existing mod set.
- Back up the server directory,
@ExileServerconfiguration, mission PBOs, BattlEye filters, and database. - Record the present launch command and the exact Exile and Arma 3 versions.
- Perform the first Esseker test on a staging instance or during a maintenance window.
A working Altis instance gives you a rollback point: if Esseker fails, restore the known-good launch line and mission rather than trying to repair a partially changed production server.
Choose the correct Esseker dependency generation
Historical instructions are not interchangeable. The older community tutorial uses @AllInArmaTerrainPack; newer repository examples use @CUPTerrains-Core. Loading both “just in case” can create conflicts and does not satisfy a package that expects a particular object or terrain version.

These rows describe separate package generations, not a recommended list to combine. Select the row that matches the Esseker distribution you actually obtained, then use that package’s folder names, PBOs, keys, and database instructions consistently.
Install the server-side mod folders
Stop the server before copying files. A typical installation places the dependency, Esseker, and Exile directories in the same server directory as the executable:

└── arma3server_x64.exeIf your package uses @A2OP or @AllInArmaTerrainPack, use that exact folder instead of creating a second, guessed dependency. Preserve each mod’s internal addons directory. Do not flatten PBOs into the root directory unless the package’s instructions explicitly require it.
Check that the server can read the files under its service account. A folder copied by an administrator but unreadable by the account that launches the service will look like a missing-mod error even when the files exist.

Set the launch parameters
Add the required folders to the server’s mod parameter in the order expected by the package. A newer CUP-based example is:
-mod=@CUPTerrains-Core;@Esseker;@Exile;...An older package may instead require a line equivalent to:
-mod=@A2OP;@Esseker;@Exile;...Replace the ellipsis with the rest of your existing server mods; it is not a literal argument. Keep the separators and folder spelling used by your hosting panel or startup script. If the panel has separate “server mods” and “client mods” fields, the terrain dependency and Esseker must be present in both where the provider’s interface requires client distribution.
Do not add two competing terrain dependencies to silence an error. If the package’s documentation has changed from All in Arma to CUP, update the dependency and its keys as a matched set.
Install BattlEye keys
Copy the Esseker package’s .bikey file and the terrain dependency’s .bikey file into the server’s Keys directory:

Arma3Server/Keys/<terrain-dependency>.bikeyThe filenames vary by release, so copy the files supplied with your chosen package rather than inventing names. A missing or mismatched key commonly prevents BattlEye clients from joining even when the server starts. Replace obsolete keys only when the package documentation calls for it, and retain a backup so you can roll back with the rest of the mod set.

Select Esseker in the Exile mission configuration
Open @ExileServer/config.cfg and find class Missions followed by class Exile. Set the mission template to Esseker and use one of the difficulty values shown in the repository examples:

};For the harder preset, use difficulty = "ExileHardcore"; instead. The cited templates use these two values; avoid making up a custom difficulty string because Exile may reject it or silently fall back to another configuration.
The template name must match the mission PBO installed for your package. Exile.Esseker is not a generic synonym for any map called Esseker; it is the class name expected by the corresponding Exile mission files.
Deploy mission PBOs and server files
Package the mission and server content in the format your host expects. The repository examples call for:
- Placing the relevant
@ExileServer/addonscontent in the server’s Exile server-mod directory. - Adding the Esseker
mpmissionfiles and packing them as PBOs with your normal PBO tool. - Uploading the resulting PBOs to the matching server and mission directories.
- Merging the package’s BattlEye filters with your existing filters rather than deleting unrelated rules.
- Keeping a copy of the original files and the generated PBO names for rollback.
The exact PBO utility and hosting-panel path depend on your server environment, so follow the package’s directory layout instead of copying a path from an unrelated host. A PBO that is one directory too deep will produce a mission-not-found error even though the archive itself is valid.
Apply the database change only when the package requires it
The DracoNet v3 example documents a foreign-key update for territory ownership. That SQL change belongs to the database schema shipped with that repository. It is not a universal Esseker requirement and should not be applied to an unrelated Exile database simply because the map is changing.

Before running any SQL:
- Export a complete database backup.
- Compare your schema with the package’s documented schema and migration.
- Run the migration against a staging database first.
- Confirm that existing territory records and ownership relationships still load.
If your Esseker package does not mention a schema migration, leave the database structure unchanged and test the normal Exile territory workflow instead.
Match the client mod set
Every player must load the same required terrain dependency and Esseker mod that the server advertises. A client that has @Esseker but not the dependency, or an older dependency build, can be rejected before the mission lobby appears.
- Distribute the exact mod names and versions used by the server.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete copies from the client profile so the launcher cannot select the wrong folder.
- Ensure the client’s key-related error is not actually a server-side key problem; clients do not install server
.bikeyfiles into the server’sKeysdirectory. - Have a test client join before announcing the change to all players.
Do not ask players to add every terrain pack ever used by an Esseker guide. Their launch set should mirror the package generation selected for your server.

- Start with the new launch line and watch the console from the first line rather than joining immediately.
- Check the server log for missing addons, missing keys, or mission-template errors.
- Confirm that the selected mission is
Exile.Esseker, not the previous Altis template. - Connect from a client with the matching dependency, Esseker, and Exile mods.
- Spawn, move between several locations, and test basic Exile actions such as territory access and persistence.
- Stop the server cleanly and restart it to verify that the map and database state survive a normal restart.
No modern universal log checklist is established in the available guides, so treat the log review as an operational verification step: record the exact error text and the mod or PBO named in it before changing files.

The server starts on Altis
- Reopen
@ExileServer/config.cfgand verify that the activeclass Exileblock containstemplate = "Exile.Esseker";. - Check that the file was uploaded to the instance the startup script actually uses; managed panels sometimes expose separate staging and live directories.
- Confirm that the Esseker mission PBO is in the expected
mpmissionlocation and is not nested inside an extra directory. - Review the launch command for a second configuration file or profile that overrides the edited one.
The log reports a missing addon or terrain object
- Compare the dependency named by the error with the package’s documented generation.
- Check that the dependency appears in
-modbefore or alongside@Essekeras shown by the package. - Look for a misspelled folder name, a truncated upload, or a PBO placed outside the mod’s
addonsdirectory. - Do not install both All in Arma and CUP automatically; replace the dependency with the one required by your actual Esseker build.
BattlEye rejects players with a key error
Verify that the supplied Esseker and dependency .bikey files are in the server’s top-level Keys folder, that the service account can read them, and that the server was restarted after copying them. A client using a different mod release can still fail after the correct server key is installed, so compare the client’s package version as well.
The mission template is not found
Ensure the mission PBO’s internal name and the configuration value are identical, including capitalization and the Exile. prefix. A template copied from a different Exile package may have a different class name even if it uses the same terrain.
Players are kicked for missing mods
Publish one authoritative mod list generated from the server’s launch line. Remove stale client copies, then have a test player reconnect with only the required dependency, Esseker, Exile, and your normal server-side client mods.

Check whether you applied the v3 repository’s database migration to the matching schema. If you used a different database layout, restore the backup and consult that package’s migration notes rather than forcing the foreign-key change.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
The installation steps are the same in principle, but the amount of control differs. Choose the route that gives you access to the files and versions your selected Esseker package needs.

A GTXGaming guide demonstrates that a managed panel can expose an Esseker/Exile template. That demonstrates a possible workflow, not a guarantee of current availability, pricing, uptime, or support for the dependency release you obtain.
Maintenance checklist for an old terrain
Esseker and Exile documentation is legacy material, and dependency names changed between package generations. Recheck the following immediately before every fresh deployment or major update:

- Required terrain dependency and Chernarus-object package, if specified.
- Arma 3, Exile, server executable, and client mod versions.
- Matching
.bikeyfiles and BattlEye filters. - Mission template name and PBO placement.
- Whether a database migration belongs to your exact package schema.
- Fresh database, configuration, PBO, and log backups.
Because the Workshop description reports roughly 1.48 million objects, test startup and player movement on hardware representative of your live server before opening the map to a large community. The figure is the 2015 listing’s description, not a modern benchmark, so measure your own instance rather than promising a particular performance level.
When to stop instead of forcing the install
If you cannot verify a legitimate, compatible Esseker distribution, if the package requires a removed dependency, or if its mission files target an incompatible Exile release, do not keep adding mods until the server launches. Restore the Altis baseline and choose a maintained terrain with documented current dependencies. Esseker’s unfinished status and the Workshop listing’s removal make compatibility verification a prerequisite, not an optional cleanup task.
