How to Install and Use Linkerd on a Kubernetes Cluster

A practical Linkerd Kubernetes guide covering prerequisites, CLI and Helm installation, certificate handling, proxy injection, health checks, extensions, and multicluster service export.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Linkerd in three deliberate stages: prepare and validate the cluster, install the Linkerd CRDs and control plane, then add a Linkerd proxy to each workload you want to mesh. The control plane alone does not change application traffic. Use the CLI for a quick, interactive installation; use Helm for a repeatable production deployment with certificates supplied by your team.

What Linkerd adds to Kubernetes

Linkerd is a service mesh for Kubernetes. Its data-plane proxy runs alongside an application pod and handles service-to-service traffic, while the control plane distributes identity and policy information and reports mesh health. This separation matters during installation: creating the control plane does not automatically inject proxies into existing Deployments.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical rollout therefore has a clear boundary. First make the control plane healthy. Next mesh one workload and verify its traffic. Only then expand the rollout, add optional extensions, or connect another cluster.

Prerequisites and compatibility checks

Have a reachable Kubernetes cluster, a working kubectl configuration, and permission to create cluster-scoped resources. The context selected in your shell is the cluster that will receive the CRDs and control plane, so confirm it before applying anything. In a change window, record the active context and the Kubernetes version so an accidental installation into the wrong environment is easy to detect.

  • Check the Kubernetes client and server versions with kubectl version and confirm that the Linkerd release you plan to use supports that Kubernetes version.
  • Install the Linkerd CLI locally and verify it with linkerd version. The CLI and server components should be compatible.
  • Install Gateway API CRDs if they are not already present. Linkerd authorization policy and dynamic-routing features depend on Gateway API resources.
  • Plan for provider-specific work if you use a private GKE cluster or Cilium with kube-proxy replacement; those environments can require additional networking configuration.
  • Make sure your identity can create CRDs, webhooks, service accounts, roles, and other cluster-scoped objects. A namespace-only role is not sufficient for the standard installation.

Before changing the cluster, run the preflight check:

linkerd check --pre

Resolve every reported prerequisite before proceeding. A successful preflight does not install anything; it confirms that the cluster is a suitable target. Run it again if you change the Kubernetes context, upgrade Kubernetes, install Gateway API resources, or alter network components.

Choose an installation method

Method Best fit What it does Certificate responsibility
Linkerd CLI Learning, evaluation, or a one-off installation Renders manifests locally and pipes them to kubectl apply The installer can generate the identity material during the CLI workflow
Helm Production pipelines and repeatable upgrades Installs a CRD chart followed by a control-plane chart You must provide a trust-anchor certificate and issuer certificate/key pair

The two methods install the same logical layers, but they differ operationally. Helm values should be kept in version control and reviewed like any other deployment configuration. The current edge chart and application versions can change, so check the repository metadata before copying a command into a production script.

Choose one management path for a given environment rather than having a pipeline install some components with Helm and others with rendered CLI output. Mixing methods can make ownership, upgrades, and drift harder to understand. Whichever path you choose, keep the CLI version, chart version, control-plane version, and Kubernetes version recorded together.

Install Linkerd with the CLI

1. Run the preflight check

linkerd check --pre

Do this against the intended Kubernetes context. If the command reports missing CRDs, permissions, or an unsupported combination, fix that condition first. The preflight stage is deliberately separate from installation, allowing an operator to correct access or compatibility problems without leaving partially installed Linkerd resources behind.

2. Install the Linkerd CRDs

linkerd install --crds | kubectl apply -f -

linkerd install --crds renders the Custom Resource Definitions required by Linkerd. Applying these first gives the API server the resource types that the control plane will use. Wait for the API server to register the definitions before applying dependent resources, especially in a busy or heavily managed cluster.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Install the control plane

linkerd install | kubectl apply -f -

This renders and applies the control-plane manifests. It does not inject proxies into your applications. The command sends generated YAML directly to kubectl, so review the target context and ensure that your shell has the intended credentials before executing it.

4. Check the installation

linkerd check

The check examines the installed components and their communication with Kubernetes. Do not begin a broad application rollout until it completes successfully, or until every remaining warning is understood and intentionally accepted. Save the output with the deployment record; it provides a useful baseline when later checks fail.

Install Linkerd with Helm for production

Helm is the more repeatable path when installation, upgrades, and configuration must be recreated consistently. The following command shape uses the Linkerd edge repository; select chart versions that are currently supported by your Linkerd release and test them in a non-production cluster first.

1. Add the chart repository

helm repo add linkerd-edge https://helm.linkerd.io/edge
helm repo update

Inspect the chart metadata and release notes before selecting a version. Edge repositories move as Linkerd evolves, so an unpinned install can produce a different result on a later day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Install CRDs before the control plane

helm install linkerd-crds linkerd-edge/linkerd-crds
  -n linkerd --create-namespace

CRDs are a separate chart so that their lifecycle can be managed independently from the control plane. Keep the release name and namespace consistent with your deployment conventions. Treat CRD upgrades as an API change and schedule them deliberately rather than allowing an unrelated application deployment to update them.

3. Supply identity certificates and install the control plane

Helm does not generate the required mTLS credentials for you. Provide a trust-anchor certificate, an issuer certificate, and the issuer private key from your organization’s certificate process. The issuer signs workload identities; the trust anchor lets proxies verify those identities. The trust anchor and issuer pair must represent the authority you intend to use for that environment.

helm install linkerd-control-plane linkerd-edge/linkerd-control-plane
  -n linkerd
  --set-file identityTrustAnchorsPEM=ca.crt
  --set-file identity.issuer.tls.crtPEM=issuer.crt
  --set-file identity.issuer.tls.keyPEM=issuer.key

In a real pipeline, put non-secret overrides in a version-controlled values.yaml and protect the issuer key as a secret. Do not commit private keys to a public repository or paste them into shell history. Pin chart and image versions rather than allowing an unattended edge update. Limit access to certificate files and make the certificate provenance part of the deployment review.

4. Validate the Helm deployment

linkerd check

Also inspect the Helm release status and Kubernetes events if the check fails. A successful Helm command only means that Kubernetes accepted the release; it does not prove that every control-plane component is ready. Compare the rendered values and release metadata with the version-controlled configuration when diagnosing a difference between staging and production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand Linkerd identity material

Linkerd’s automatic mTLS depends on a trust relationship shared by the proxies and control plane. The trust-anchor certificate is the root authority used to validate identities. The issuer certificate and private key are used by the control plane to issue those identities to workloads. This is why Helm asks for three separate PEM inputs rather than a single generic certificate.

The CLI workflow can generate identity material as part of installation, which is convenient for evaluation. Production teams commonly use an established certificate process and pass its outputs to Helm so that the same configuration can be reproduced and reviewed. Keep the trust anchor and issuer files associated with the exact cluster and Linkerd release they serve; passing a certificate from another environment can produce identity failures even when all pods are running.

When an identity check fails, first verify the files supplied to Helm, their intended authority, and the chart settings that reference them. Then use the identity and diagnostics areas of the CLI to distinguish certificate problems from API, network, or proxy-injection problems. Do not solve an identity error by skipping the health checks or by injecting more workloads.

Mesh an application

Meshing is an explicit workload operation. You add the Linkerd data-plane proxy to a Deployment, StatefulSet, or other supported workload, then roll out the changed pod template.

Inject the proxy into manifests

The CLI reference provides the inject command. Use it in the workflow that produces the manifests you apply to the cluster. For a file-based manifest, the shape is:

linkerd inject app.yaml | kubectl apply -f -

For a package or GitOps pipeline, run injection at the point where the Kubernetes YAML is rendered, or use the documented namespace/workload injection workflow. The important result is that each selected pod template contains the Linkerd proxy and its required configuration. Keep the injected output reproducible so a later rollout does not silently remove the proxy.

Confirm the rollout

  1. Apply the injected manifest and wait for the new pods to become Ready.
  2. Check that each pod has the expected additional proxy container, not just the original application container.
  3. Run linkerd check again to catch identity, webhook, or control-plane problems exposed by the rollout.
  4. Generate representative service traffic and observe the meshed request path before injecting more workloads.
  5. Compare readiness, restart counts, and application behavior with the pre-mesh baseline so a resource or protocol problem is visible quickly.

Inject only the workloads you intend to mesh. A namespace-wide or cluster-wide rollout can magnify a bad policy, incompatible protocol, or resource limit across many services. Start with a low-risk service, verify both directions of a representative call where applicable, and expand in controlled batches.

Operate and troubleshoot the mesh

Use the health check as your first diagnostic

linkerd check is useful both immediately after installation and during incidents. Run it after a failed rollout, certificate change, control-plane upgrade, or networking change. Work from the first failing check downward; later failures are often symptoms of that earlier condition. A check result is most useful when paired with the recorded Kubernetes, CLI, chart, and control-plane versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful CLI areas

The CLI includes commands for identity, diagnostics, viz, upgrade, uninstall, and version. Use the version command to record client and control-plane versions before troubleshooting. Identity and diagnostic commands help separate certificate problems from connectivity or proxy-injection problems. The upgrade and uninstall commands should be used according to the release’s documented sequence rather than improvised resource deletion.

Common failure patterns

  • Preflight fails: verify the current context, Kubernetes version, API access, and required Gateway API CRDs. Correct permissions before applying cluster-wide resources.
  • CRD or webhook errors: make sure the CRD installation completed before installing the control plane, and wait for API registration to settle before retrying dependent resources.
  • Control plane is healthy but traffic is not meshed: inspect the pod template. Installing Linkerd never injects existing applications automatically.
  • mTLS identity errors in Helm installations: confirm that the trust anchor, issuer certificate, and issuer key belong to the intended authority and were passed to the chart with the correct file settings.
  • Private-cluster connectivity problems: revisit the provider’s private-network rules and any Cilium kube-proxy-replacement requirements before changing Linkerd settings.
  • Only some workloads are meshed: check whether injection was applied to the correct namespace or rendered manifest and whether the latest pod template actually rolled out.
  • Multicluster checks fail while local checks pass: inspect gateway reachability, shared trust, link credentials, and service-export labels separately. A healthy local control plane does not prove that the inter-cluster path is configured.

Plan upgrades and removal

Record the Linkerd CLI, chart, control-plane, and Kubernetes versions for every environment. Test an upgrade in a staging cluster, run the documented upgrade workflow, and finish with linkerd check. If you must remove Linkerd, use the documented uninstall workflow and account for the CRDs and any application changes separately; deleting the control plane does not undo proxy containers already present in workload manifests.

Optional extensions: observability and multicluster

The base control plane is not a dashboard or a cross-cluster router. Extensions such as viz and multicluster are separate installations with their own resources and version requirements. Install them only after the base control plane passes its checks, and validate extension compatibility with the Linkerd version you run.

Observability with the viz extension

The viz extension adds Linkerd’s observability components. Treat its installation, permissions, and resource consumption as an additional change. A healthy base mesh is a prerequisite; installing viz cannot repair a broken control plane or an unmeshed application. Roll it out independently so that a dashboard or metrics issue does not obscure the health of the core proxy and identity path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to add an extension

Add observability after one or more workloads are successfully meshed and producing representative traffic. Add multicluster only when there is a concrete cross-cluster service requirement and the network, trust, and credential owners are identified. Keeping these projects separate makes it easier to attribute a failing check to the base installation or to an extension.

Connect two Kubernetes clusters with Linkerd multicluster

Multicluster is a separate design, not a switch on a single-cluster installation. You need two reachable Kubernetes clusters, a Linkerd control plane in each, a common trust anchor, configured kubectl contexts, elevated permissions, and LoadBalancer support for the gateway path.

1. Prepare both clusters

  1. Install and validate Linkerd independently in each cluster.
  2. Use distinct, correctly configured kubectl contexts and confirm which context is active before every operation.
  3. Ensure the two control planes share the same trust anchor so identities can be verified across the link.
  4. Provision the multicluster gateway and confirm that its service can receive traffic through a LoadBalancer or an equivalent reachable endpoint.
  5. Assign owners for gateway networking, certificate trust, Kubernetes permissions, and exported-service policy before linking production clusters.

2. Install the multicluster components

The CLI provides multicluster install; a Helm-based installation is also available when the gateway and service-mirror components must be managed in an existing Helm pipeline. Select one management method per environment and keep its configuration under change control. The gateway and service-mirror components have their own resources and version expectations; do not assume that installing the base control plane created them.

3. Link the clusters and inspect the result

The linking workflow creates credentials and a Link resource that tells one cluster how to reach the other. Protect those credentials like cluster access tokens. After linking, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
linkerd multicluster check
linkerd multicluster gateways

The first command validates multicluster components and connectivity. The second shows gateway state and helps identify an endpoint, health, or permission problem. Run both commands again after changing a gateway address, credentials, trust material, or service-export policy.

4. Export only the services you intend to share

Services are not mirrored automatically. By default, label each service that should be exported:

kubectl label service <service-name> mirror.linkerd.io/exported=true

Replace <service-name> with the actual Service name in the source cluster. Keep export decisions explicit: exporting a service makes it eligible for discovery through the remote cluster’s service-mirror components, while unlabeled services remain local. Review labels during application changes so a newly created Service is not exposed unintentionally.

5. Use the multicluster CLI deliberately

The multicluster command group includes install, link-gen, allow, check, and gateways. Use link-gen when generating link configuration, allow when granting the required access, and rerun the check after changing credentials, gateways, or exported services. Follow the current command reference for flags because syntax and defaults can vary by release.

Multicluster trade-offs

Concern Single cluster Multicluster
Control planes One control plane to operate One control plane in each cluster
Trust One cluster identity domain Shared trust anchor and cross-cluster identity validation
Network Cluster networking and service discovery Reachable gateways, LoadBalancer support, and cross-cluster connectivity
Credentials Local Kubernetes permissions Link credentials and elevated permissions for setup
Service exposure Services are local to the cluster Explicit export labels control which services are mirrored

Multicluster adds operational work even when the application manifests are unchanged. Plan for gateway availability, endpoint monitoring, credential protection, and a clear process for revoking or regenerating a link. Test one exported service first, verify discovery and traffic, and expand exports only after the path is stable.

A rollout sequence that minimizes risk

  1. Confirm Kubernetes compatibility, Gateway API availability, context, and permissions.
  2. Install the CLI and run linkerd check --pre.
  3. Choose CLI for a quick installation or Helm for a version-controlled production pipeline.
  4. Install CRDs first, then the control plane, and run linkerd check.
  5. For Helm, verify the trust anchor, issuer certificate, issuer key, protected secrets, and pinned chart versions.
  6. Inject one low-risk application, verify its proxy and traffic, and check the mesh again.
  7. Expand injection gradually, watching application readiness and resource use.
  8. Add viz or multicluster only as separate, version-compatible projects.
  9. For multicluster, establish shared trust, gateways, credentials, and explicit service exports before sending production traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does installing the Linkerd control plane mesh every namespace automatically?

No. Workloads must be changed to include the Linkerd data-plane proxy through the documented injection workflow.

Can I use Helm without creating Linkerd certificates first?

No. Helm requires a trust-anchor certificate and issuer certificate/key pair supplied by the operator; the CLI workflow can generate identity material for you.

Are services copied between linked clusters automatically?

No. Label each intended Service with mirror.linkerd.io/exported=true and verify the multicluster service-mirror and gateway status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why must I install the CRDs before the control plane?

The CRD step registers the Kubernetes resource types that Linkerd components use. Applying the control plane first can produce missing-resource or webhook errors.

What does linkerd check --pre do?

It validates cluster access, compatibility, and installation prerequisites without installing Linkerd. Fix reported conditions before applying CRDs or control-plane manifests.

Is the viz dashboard included in the base installation?

No. viz is an optional extension with its own resources, permissions, and version requirements.

Can multicluster work without a LoadBalancer?

The documented setup expects gateway connectivity with LoadBalancer support or an equivalent reachable endpoint. Without a reachable gateway path, linking cannot provide cross-cluster traffic.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose the CLI or Helm?

Use the CLI for a quick or exploratory installation. Use Helm when repeatable production installs, version-controlled values, and pipeline-managed upgrades matter.

What are link-gen and allow used for?

They are multicluster CLI operations: link-gen generates link configuration, while allow grants the access required for the link. Follow the command reference for release-specific flags.

The Bottom Line

Validate the cluster first, install Linkerd CRDs before the control plane, and require linkerd check to pass before meshing applications. Helm is the repeatable production option but puts certificate management on your team. Inject proxies deliberately, add extensions separately, and treat multicluster as a new architecture with shared trust, gateways, credentials, and explicit service exports.
