On Ubuntu, the simplest up-to-date installation is Deno’s official shell installer. It installs Deno for your user in ~/.deno/bin; after reloading your shell, deno --version confirms that the runtime is ready.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Choose the installation method first
Deno is distributed as a single binary executable with no external dependencies. For a normal Ubuntu development machine, the official shell installer is the recommended route because it tracks the current Linux release and does not require system-wide administrator access. The other methods solve different operational needs:

| Method | Version freshness | Administrative scope | Update control | Source and operational fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official shell installer | Current Linux release recommended by Deno’s documentation | Per user, normally under $HOME/.deno/bin |
Use deno upgrade |
Official installer; best for a local shell |
| Snap or Ubuntu distribution package | May lag behind the current release | Managed by the package system | Controlled by the package manager | Community-maintained packages; useful when an organisation requires centrally managed software |
| npm | Depends on the npm package and its update process | Global npm installation | Controlled by npm | Useful when Deno is managed alongside other npm tooling |
| Manual archive | Release selected by you | Per user in ~/.local/bin or system-wide in /usr/local/bin |
You download and replace releases yourself | Useful for pinned versions, scripted provisioning, or environments where the installer is not suitable |
| Docker image | Image tag selected by you | Container scope | Controlled through image updates | Suitable for Ubuntu-based deployment rather than installing into the host shell |
Deno does not publish an official apt repository. An apt command that assumes a Deno-maintained repository will therefore not provide the official installation path. Snap and distribution packages can still be appropriate under a company’s packaging policy, but check who maintains the package and how quickly it receives Deno releases.
Install Deno with the official shell installer
1. Run the installer
Open a terminal as the Ubuntu user who will run Deno and execute:

curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh | sh
This downloads and runs Deno’s official Linux installation script. The normal destination is $HOME/.deno/bin/deno, so the installation is available to that user without writing into a system directory. The script may add an environment-source line similar to . "$HOME/.deno/env" to your shell configuration, such as .bashrc, .zshrc, or .profile.
The command uses curl. If Ubuntu reports that curl is unavailable, install or otherwise provide curl through the software-management process approved for your machine, then run the installer again. Do not replace the command with an assumed Deno apt repository: no official one is published.
2. Reload the shell environment
Start a new terminal, or reload the configuration file used by your current shell. The installer’s environment line is what places $HOME/.deno/bin on PATH. For a Bash session, a new terminal is the least error-prone option; if you know which file was changed, you can source that file in the current session.
source ~/.bashrc
Use the corresponding file if your installation uses Zsh or a login profile instead. Sourcing a file that does not contain the Deno environment line will not change the current command search path.
3. Verify the runtime
Run:
deno --version
A successful result prints Deno’s version information. This is the definitive first check that the executable can be found and launched from your current shell. It also gives you the installed version before you add projects or tools.
Where the Deno binary is installed
The shell installer normally puts the executable at:

Here, ~ means the home directory of the user who ran the script. A per-user installation is useful on a workstation because it avoids changing the operating system’s global binaries and lets each user control upgrades independently.
The path shown by the installer and the path used by your shell can differ if the DENO_INSTALL environment variable was set before installation. In that case, the executable is under:

$DENO_INSTALL/bin/deno
When diagnosing a path issue, inspect both the configured installation location and the shell’s current PATH; do not assume every installation lives in ~/.deno.
Fix “deno: command not found” on Ubuntu
This error usually means the installation completed but the current shell has not loaded the path change. Work through the checks in order.

1. Open a new shell
Close the terminal window and open another one, then run:
deno --version
A new shell reads the updated startup configuration. This resolves the common case where the binary exists but the old shell environment is still in memory.
2. Check whether Deno’s directory is on PATH
printf '%sn' "$PATH"
ls -l ~/.deno/bin/deno
The first command shows the directories your shell searches. The second checks whether the default per-user executable exists. If the file is present but ~/.deno/bin is absent from PATH, reload the shell configuration line added by the installer or open a new terminal.
3. Check the installer’s environment file
The shell installer may use an environment file and add a line like this to your startup configuration:
. "$HOME/.deno/env"
Confirm that the line is present in the startup file your Ubuntu session actually reads. Bash, Zsh, interactive shells, and login shells can read different files. If you run a command through a service manager, scheduled job, remote non-interactive shell, or another process that does not read your interactive profile, configure that process’s environment separately.
4. Account for DENO_INSTALL
If DENO_INSTALL was set when you installed Deno, inspect its value and check the matching directory:

printf '%sn' "${DENO_INSTALL:-not set}"
ls -l "$DENO_INSTALL/bin/deno"
When the variable is set, add $DENO_INSTALL/bin to the relevant PATH rather than adding ~/.deno/bin blindly.
5. Run the executable by its full path
If the file exists but command lookup still fails, invoke it directly:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →~/.deno/bin/deno --version
If this works, the binary itself is usable and the remaining problem is shell configuration. If you installed into a custom location, substitute that location or use $DENO_INSTALL/bin/deno.
Install Deno through npm
An npm-based installation is available for environments that already manage developer tools through npm:
npm install -g deno
This uses npm’s global package location rather than the shell installer’s ~/.deno/bin directory. Consequently, the command that finds Deno and the command used to update it are governed by npm’s global configuration. Verify with:
deno --version
If Ubuntu finds a different Deno executable than you expected, inspect your shell’s command resolution and npm’s global binary directory. Avoid mixing several installation methods unless you deliberately manage their order on PATH; otherwise an older package can mask a newer binary.
Use Snap or a distribution package when central management matters
There is no official Deno apt repository. Ubuntu’s distribution packages and Snap packages are community maintained and may lag behind Deno’s current release. They can nevertheless fit an organisation that requires centrally reviewed packages, standardised upgrades, or system-level inventory.
Before choosing one, check:
- Which project or distributor publishes the package.
- What Deno version the package contains.
- How frequently the package receives updates.
- Whether the package is available for the Ubuntu architecture used by your machines.
- Where the package places the executable and how it exposes it on
PATH.
After installation, always run deno --version. The version output is more reliable than the package name alone when several sources are available.

Install a specific release manually
Manual installation is the most explicit option when you need to pin a release, verify an archive, or place the binary in a controlled directory. Deno provides Linux archives for the two architectures covered here:
- x86_64 Ubuntu:
deno-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.zip - arm64 Ubuntu:
deno-aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu.zip
Download the archive that matches the machine’s architecture, along with the matching SHA-256 file published for that release. Verify the archive before extracting it. The exact release URL and filename depend on the version you choose, so use the archive and checksum pair from that release’s distribution page rather than guessing a path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPer-user placement
For a single user, extract the archive and move the executable into ~/.local/bin:
mkdir -p ~/.local/bin
unzip deno-ARCHIVE.zip
achmod +x deno
mv deno ~/.local/bin/deno
Replace deno-ARCHIVE.zip with the downloaded filename. The displayed achmod line is not a valid command; use the correct command below when performing the installation:
chmod +x deno
mv deno ~/.local/bin/deno
Ensure ~/.local/bin is on your PATH, open a new shell if you changed the startup configuration, and verify:
deno --version
System-wide placement
For a host-wide installation, place the executable in /usr/local/bin and use the administrative privileges required by that directory:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
unzip deno-ARCHIVE.zip
chmod +x deno
sudo mv deno /usr/local/bin/deno
deno --version
System-wide placement makes the binary available to users whose PATH includes /usr/local/bin, but it also transfers update responsibility to the person or automation managing that host. A manually installed binary will not be upgraded by npm, Snap, or the shell installer.
Update an existing shell-script installation
For an installation made by the official shell script, run:
Best Value
deno upgrade
The command updates that Deno installation. After it finishes, confirm the resulting version:
deno --version
If the version does not change, first check which executable your shell is running and whether another installation appears earlier on PATH. Updating one copy does not update a separate npm, package-manager, or manually installed copy.
Uninstall Deno cleanly
Shell-script installation
For a shell-script installation, clean Deno’s local data, remove the installation directory, and remove the environment-source line from the shell configuration:
deno clean
rm -rf ~/.deno
Then delete the line similar to . "$HOME/.deno/env" from the .bashrc, .zshrc, or .profile file where the installer added it. Start a new shell and check that deno --version no longer resolves to that installation.
If you set DENO_INSTALL, remove the directory selected by that variable instead of assuming ~/.deno is the right location.
Other installation methods
- Remove an npm installation with npm, using the same global package context that installed it.
- Remove a Snap or distribution package with its package manager.
- Delete a manually installed per-user binary from
~/.local/bin, or remove the system-wide binary from/usr/local/binwith the privileges required by that directory.
After removing one copy, check for other copies on PATH. Finding Deno after an uninstall usually means another installation method is still present.

Installing Deno on an Ubuntu host is different from running a Deno service in a container. Deno publishes official Docker images for Ubuntu and other Linux variants, so a deployment pipeline can select a Deno image rather than modifying the host’s runtime. This keeps the service’s runtime and update process inside the container lifecycle.
Use a container when the application is already built and deployed as an image, when host-level package changes are undesirable, or when you need a repeatable runtime across machines. Use the shell installer for interactive development on an Ubuntu workstation. Whichever approach you choose, pin and update the runtime deliberately and verify the version inside the environment that actually runs the application.
Quick Recap
Installation checklist
- Choose one primary installation source before adding Deno to
PATH. - For the current Linux release, run
curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh | sh. - Open a new shell or reload the startup file that contains the Deno environment line.
- Run
deno --versionand record the version if you are troubleshooting or documenting a build. - For manual installation, match the archive to x86_64 or arm64 and verify its SHA-256 checksum.
- When
denois not found, check~/.deno/bin,$DENO_INSTALL/bin, and the active shell’sPATH. - Use
deno upgradefor shell-script installations and the corresponding manager for npm, Snap, distribution, or manual installations.
