Install DayZ Expansion on a dedicated server in five stages: establish a working vanilla DayZ server, install the current Community Framework (CF), Dabs Framework (DF) and Expansion Bundle files, copy every supplied .bikey into the server’s root keys folder, then launch with a semicolon-separated -mod list whose names exactly match the directories on disk. Start the server once before importing mission content; that first successful Expansion launch creates the ExpansionMod settings folder under the profile path.

The procedure below applies to a self-managed Windows or Linux server and to managed hosts that expose the same files and startup parameters. Dependency names, package composition and Workshop folder names can change, so check the current Expansion documentation whenever you install or update.

Expansion is an addition to an existing DayZ dedicated server, not a replacement for the server software. Begin with a server that starts and accepts a vanilla client connection. This gives you a known-good baseline for separating DayZ, host and mod errors.
A working dedicated DayZ installation
Install the official dedicated server with SteamCMD. The DayZ Modding Wiki uses Steam application ID 223350. Replace the example path with the actual Windows or Linux directory used by your host:

steamcmd +force_install_dir /path/to/server +login anonymous +app_update 223350 validate +quitRun the command from a repeatable update script rather than typing it manually for every maintenance cycle. On Windows, use a Windows path and SteamCMD executable; on Linux, use a Linux path and make the script executable. The important parts are the app ID, installation directory and validate option.
The current Expansion dependencies
The Expansion installation guide identifies Community Framework (CF) and Dabs Framework (DF) as essential dependencies. It lists DayZ-Expansion-Bundle as the all-in-one package. DayZ-Expansion-Licensed and DayZ-Expansion-Animations are separate additions rather than assumptions you should add automatically. Confirm the current dependency list and Workshop names before an update because the project can change how packages are composed.

Access to files, launch parameters and logs
You need permission to upload mod folders, write to the server root keys directory, edit the startup command and read the profile directory. A managed host must expose equivalent controls; a simple file manager without startup-parameter and profile access is often insufficient for diagnosing Expansion.
Install the mod folders
- Stop the server. Do not replace mod files while the DayZ process is running.
- Download the current CF, DF and Expansion packages from their official distribution channels. Add the separate Licensed or Animations packages only when the current documentation and your intended feature set require them.
- Place each complete mod folder in the server installation directory or the mod directory specified by your provider. Keep the folder names visible; those exact names are needed in the launch command.
- Do not nest a mod inside an extra directory. The folder named in
-modmust contain the mod’s files directly. If an archive extracts asSomePackage/SomePackage/, move the inner folder so the path used by the server points to the actual mod root. - Record the final names and paths. Spaces, capitalization and punctuation matter when a host resolves the command line. If you rename a folder to remove spaces, use the renamed value everywhere, including the startup command and any update script.
Install every signature key in the correct place
Each downloaded mod contains a key directory. Inside it are one or more .bikey files. Copy every supplied key file from CF, DF, the Bundle and any additional required package into the dedicated server’s root keys directory.

/path/to/server/keys/On a Windows installation this is the keys folder beside the server executable, not a keys folder inside an individual mod. On a managed host, use the provider’s documented equivalent of the server root. Preserve the .bikey extension and do not put the files in the profile directory.
Repeat this copy operation after every mod update. A new release can ship a new key, and leaving an old or missing key in place commonly produces a signature error or prevents a client from joining. Keep a simple inventory of the installed mod folders and their keys so an update does not silently omit one.
Build the startup command
Bohemia’s server parameters define -config, -port, -profiles, -mod and -serverMod. The Expansion guide gives this representative Windows command:
start DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 "-mod=@CF;@Dabs Framework;@DayZ-Expansion-Bundle;@DayZ-Expansion-Licensed" -profiles=ServerProfile -netlog -adminlogUse it as a pattern, not as a line to paste unchanged. Every value must describe your installation.

Ordering and folder-name rules
Put dependencies before the package that uses them: CF, DF, then the Expansion package and any required add-on. The server ultimately resolves the actual folders, so the order cannot repair a misspelled name or an incorrectly extracted directory. The client must load the same required mod set; -serverMod is not a way to hide a mod that clients need.
If your host rejects spaces in command-line values, rename @Dabs Framework to a simpler name such as @DabsFramework and use that identical name in the -mod list. Do not rename only one side of the arrangement.

First launch and the Expansion settings folder
- Start the server with only the core dependency and Expansion entries in the command.
- Wait for the process to finish loading instead of stopping it immediately after the executable appears.
- Open the directory named by
-profiles. - Look for a newly generated folder named
ExpansionMod.
The profile directory may be called profile, sc, server profile, instance_xxxx or config, depending on the host. The name shown in a control panel is not always the physical path, so verify it by checking where the RPT and crash logs are written. Expansion settings are stored under the generated ExpansionMod directory. Edit those files only after confirming that the server loaded the intended mod version; otherwise you can end up changing settings for a stale or incomplete installation.
Import mission files separately
The mod binaries and the mission content are separate installation steps. Expansion content such as items, vehicles, weapons, traders and mapping data comes from the current DayZ-Expansion-Missions repository. Follow its README_TUTORIAL.txt rather than copying a mission folder by guesswork.

Choose content that matches the server
- Use mission files for the map actually running on your server.
- Match the mission package to the installed Expansion and dependency versions.
- Treat trader and mapping files as optional feature choices, not mandatory parts of the base installation.
- Import one logical group at a time and restart between changes.
A mission made for a different map or mod revision can prevent startup or produce missing-class errors even when the mod folders and keys are correct. Keep a backup of the last working mission before each import so you can revert without rebuilding the entire server.
Verify the installation in a controlled order
- Start vanilla first. Confirm that the unmodified DayZ server reaches a stable running state and that a client can connect.
- Add CF and DF. Keep the provider’s exact folder names and restart.
- Add the current Expansion package. Include separate packages only when required for your chosen features.
- Check the root keys directory. Every installed mod must have its corresponding
.bikeycopied there. - Validate command paths. Confirm that the config file, profile directory, executable and every
-modfolder resolve to real files or directories. - Enable logging. Use
-netlogand-adminlogduring setup, then inspect the profile for RPT and crash logs. - Join with a matching client. The client must have every mod listed under
-mod, with versions compatible with the server. - Import mission content incrementally. Add the mission files and optional trader or mapping features one group at a time, restarting after each change.
Troubleshoot joins, startup failures and missing settings
Players receive a signature or key error
Stop the server and compare the client-required mod list with the server’s -mod list. Then open every installed mod’s key directory and copy all .bikey files into the server root keys directory again. A key inside @SomeMod/key is not automatically read as a server key. Check that the client and server are using compatible mod versions and remove duplicate or obsolete mod folders that could be selected accidentally.
The server does not start after adding Expansion
Check syntax before changing settings. A missing quote, wrong executable name, invalid profile path or misspelled folder can stop the process before Expansion is involved. Reduce the command to the last known-good version, then add one entry at a time. Review the profile’s RPT and any timestamped crash_timedate.log file. The newest optional mod or mission import is the first item to remove when a previously working server fails.
The server starts but players cannot join
Confirm that the game port is reachable, the client has the same required mod set and the launch line uses -mod rather than incorrectly placing a client-required package in -serverMod. Check for a folder-name mismatch caused by spaces, capitalization or an extra extraction directory. Have every player restart their launcher after correcting the mod list so a cached, different version is not used.
The ExpansionMod folder is missing
Inspect the physical directory used by -profiles, not only the control panel’s label. If no folder appears, verify that the server actually loaded Expansion: a misspelled -mod entry, an incorrect mod path or an early crash can leave no generated settings. Start with the core package, wait for a stable process, and then check the profile again.
A mission import causes errors
Remove the newest mission files and restore the last working backup. Confirm the map, Expansion version and dependency versions, then follow the mission repository’s tutorial precisely. Reintroduce trader, mapping and other optional sections separately so the failing component is identifiable.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Either model can run Expansion if it provides the required file and launch controls. The practical difference is who maintains those controls and who can inspect failures.

No host should be considered Expansion-ready until it can answer those questions and demonstrate profile access. A low-friction control panel is less useful if it prevents you from correcting a key, changing the launch line or retrieving the logs that explain a crash.

Keeping the server maintainable
- Keep an update record. Note the date, package versions, folder names and keys copied for each change.
- Update in a maintenance window. Stop the server, back up the profile and mission directories, update the mod folders, copy the new keys and restart.
- Test before opening the server. Join with a test account and verify the map, traders, vehicles and other enabled features.
- Preserve a rollback point. Keep the previous mod folders and the last working command until the new version has been validated.
- Do not mix mission revisions casually. A mission backup from one Expansion version may not be valid for another.
- Keep client instructions synchronized. Publish the exact required mod names and versions so players do not connect with a partial or stale set.
Installation checklist
- Vanilla DayZ server starts and accepts a connection.
- Current CF and DF dependencies are installed.
- Current Expansion Bundle and any intentionally selected add-ons are present.
- Every mod’s
.bikeyis in the server rootkeysfolder. -moduses exact, semicolon-separated folder names.- Only server-side content is placed in
