Sons of the Forest Virginia Guide: How to Find, Recruit and Use Her

Virginia is a recruitable companion who appears in the island wilderness during Team B exploration. The reliable way to gain her trust is to keep weapons holstered, move slowly, and allow several peaceful encounters. Once the interaction prompt appears, you can open her inventory, equip her with a pistol and shotgun, and assign a GPS Locator so her position appears on your GPS Tracker.

She is not a second Kelvin. Virginia acts autonomously rather than accepting a detailed notepad task list, so your job is to equip her, keep her alive, and position your base and expeditions so she can help as a defender, scout and forager.

What Virginia does in Sons of the Forest

Virginia is an independent companion with her own behavior. She can guard, relax and forage plants, and she may move away from the exact place where you last saw her. You cannot manage her with Kelvin-style direct orders. Instead, you influence her usefulness by building trust, giving her equipment and making it easy for her to reach the places you want defended.

Her combat role is the most distinctive difference. Virginia can use both the pistol and the shotgun. The companion reference reports that she does not consume ammunition while firing either weapon, so equipping her lets you preserve your own rounds while she contributes ranged fire. Treat that as an in-game companion mechanic, not as a reason to leave her unprotected: she can still be downed or killed, and her survival matters for the Keep Your Friends Close achievement.

Virginia is listed as age 20 in the companion reference. That database attribute does not change her recruitment, equipment or combat behavior.

How to find Virginia

Where the first encounter happens

Virginia is first encountered in the island wilderness and can appear relatively early while Team B is being explored. The encounter is not presented as a conventional mission in which you receive a waypoint and immediately recruit her. She is cautious, watches from a distance and may run if you approach with a weapon drawn or move aggressively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because her appearance is an encounter rather than a one-time conversation, do not assume that a retreat means you have lost the opportunity. If she leaves, continue exploring, return to the area later and repeat the peaceful approach. Patience is part of the recruitment process.

The safest first approach

  1. When you notice Virginia, stop sprinting and put away any weapon.
  2. Walk rather than charging toward her. Keep enough distance that she does not panic.
  3. Do not swing, aim, fire or otherwise threaten her. Let her decide whether to remain nearby.
  4. If she runs, do not chase. Leave the area and come back on a later pass.
  5. Repeat these non-threatening encounters until the interaction prompt becomes available.

There is no benefit to trying to force the encounter. Chasing her, surrounding her or keeping a firearm raised can reset the situation by making her flee again. A calm retreat is progress because it preserves the chance for another meeting.

How to recruit Virginia

Wait for the interaction prompt

Recruitment happens when the game presents an interaction prompt during a peaceful encounter. Use that prompt to interact with Virginia and open her inventory. This is the point at which she becomes a companion rather than a passing survivor in the wilderness.

If the prompt does not appear, back away and give her room. Check that your weapon is holstered and that you have not just attacked nearby enemies in a way that makes the scene dangerous. The documented method is repeated peaceful contact, not a special item or a combat challenge.

What changes after recruitment

Virginia does not receive a comparable command-notepad task list. You will not assign her a sequence such as collecting logs, building a shelter or following a detailed route. Her behavior remains autonomous. She may move around, forage or guard without waiting for a direct order, so the practical controls you have are her inventory, her marker and the places you choose to spend time.

That arrangement can feel less predictable than Kelvin’s system, but it also means Virginia can contribute without constant micromanagement. Equip her before a dangerous trip, leave a clear route back to your base and use the GPS marker when you need to locate her.

How to put a GPS Locator on Virginia

Assigning the locator

  1. Have a GPS Locator available in your inventory.
  2. Open the locator-selection interface and choose the icon you want to display before handing it over. Selecting the icon first gives Virginia a distinctive map marker instead of leaving you to identify a generic symbol later.
  3. Use the interaction with Virginia to give her the selected GPS Locator.
  4. Open your GPS Tracker and look for the assigned icon. Her position will update as she moves.

The locator turns Virginia’s independent movement into something you can manage. If she wanders away from camp, check the GPS Tracker before making a long search through the forest. The marker shows where she is now, not a promise that she will remain there.

Using locators for base markers

A GPS Locator is not limited to companions. Locators can also be mounted on sticks to create stationary markers for a base, resource area or other place you want to revisit. Use a distinctive icon for Virginia and different icons for fixed locations so the map remains readable.

If her marker seems missing

  • Confirm that the locator was actually handed to Virginia through the interaction, rather than merely selected in your inventory.
  • Check that you are viewing the GPS Tracker’s map and not only the physical device in your hand.
  • Look for the icon you selected; choosing a recognizable symbol before the handoff makes it easier to spot.
  • Allow time for her to move. The marker follows her position, so it may not be near the place where you recruited her.

How to equip Virginia with weapons

Give her the pistol and shotgun

Virginia can use the pistol and the shotgun. Open her inventory through the companion interaction and place each weapon with her equipment. Give her both when you have them so she can contribute at different ranges and continue defending herself while you use your own preferred weapon.

GameSpot identifies the shotgun in the VIP Keycard area. That location is a useful progression reminder: if you have not reached the VIP Keycard area, you may not yet have the shotgun to equip. The pistol can be handed over when it becomes available to you.

Virginia’s ammunition behavior

The companion reference states that Virginia fires both weapons without consuming ammunition. In practical terms, you do not need to load her inventory with shells or pistol rounds every time she shoots. Keep your ammunition for your own weapons and for situations in which you need immediate control.

This does not make her invulnerable or guarantee that every shot will solve an encounter. Her value is sustained supporting fire from an autonomous companion, not a replacement for positioning, healing or deciding when to retreat.

Preparing her before a dangerous trip

  • Equip both firearms before leaving a safe area.
  • Check that you can still identify her on the GPS Tracker.
  • Keep her near routes she can actually traverse instead of placing the group in a location that strands her behind terrain or structures.
  • Do not fire through her or swing at enemies when she is in your line of attack; friendly fire is an avoidable risk.

Virginia versus Kelvin: which companion does what?

Virginia and Kelvin complement each other, but they are controlled and used differently. The following comparison reflects their documented companion roles rather than a ranking of which character is universally better.

Category Virginia Kelvin
Recruitment Requires patience and repeated non-threatening encounters before the interaction prompt appears. Provides immediate command access after his recruitment sequence.
Control model Autonomous; no comparable notepad task list. Uses notepad-style commands for gathering and building tasks.
Combat Can use a pistol and shotgun; the companion reference says she does not consume ammunition when firing them. Does not fight.
Utility Can guard, relax and forage plants while moving independently. Focused on gathering, carrying out instructions and helping with construction.
Tracking Can carry a GPS Locator so her moving position appears on the GPS Tracker. Can also be managed separately, but this guide’s Virginia method is to assign her a locator and use her distinct icon.

Use Kelvin when you need a task repeated or materials brought to a construction project. Use Virginia when you want an armed, mobile companion who can protect an area without consuming your ammunition. Keeping both alive gives you the broadest mix of utility and is required for the achievement described below.

How to use Virginia effectively

Make her a base defender

Virginia’s autonomous guarding behavior is most useful when your base is a place she can reach and recognize. Build and operate from a location with practical paths in and out, then use her GPS marker to check whether she is nearby before a dangerous excursion. Because she does not wait for a direct guard command, your layout and routine matter more than a menu setting.

Use her as a mobile scout

For exploration, equip her before you leave and keep the locator visible on the GPS Tracker. If she moves ahead or takes a different route, the marker lets you decide whether to follow, regroup or continue without her. Her role is support, not a guaranteed waypoint guide; she may forage or relax instead of matching your exact path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Let her forage while you build

Virginia’s listed actions include foraging plants. That makes her a useful background companion during base work: she can move independently while you gather materials, construct defenses or organize storage. Do not expect a command that tells her which plant to collect or where to deposit it; her behavior is autonomous.

Keep the marker readable

A distinctive icon is more than a cosmetic choice. If you also use GPS Locators on sticks for camps and resource points, assign Virginia an icon that cannot be confused with a stationary marker. This avoids wasting time checking the wrong location when she has moved away from camp.

Keeping Virginia alive

Why survival matters

The companion reference states that the Keep Your Friends Close achievement unlocks when Virginia and Kelvin are alive at the end of the story. Recruiting Virginia is therefore not enough if you are pursuing that achievement; she must survive through the conclusion alongside Kelvin.

Avoid friendly fire

Virginia may move into a fight while you are aiming, and her independent movement can put her in unexpected positions. Confirm your target before firing, avoid explosive or wide attacks when she is close and do not swing a melee weapon through her position. These precautions protect both companions without requiring a special command.

When she is downed

If the game presents Virginia in a downed state, revive her when the interaction is available instead of leaving the area. A downed companion is not the same as a confirmed permanent death. The cited companion information does not document a guaranteed recovery method after permanent death, so prevention and prompt revival are the dependable approach.

Recovering after she disappears

First check the GPS Tracker. Virginia may simply be foraging, relaxing or moving to another part of the island. If the marker places her away from camp, travel to that location rather than assuming recruitment failed. If she has been downed, look for the downed interaction and restore her before resuming exploration.

Troubleshooting common Virginia problems

“She keeps running away.”

Holster your weapon, stop chasing and return later. The documented recruitment method depends on repeated peaceful encounters. Aggressive movement, a drawn weapon or nearby combat can cause her to flee again.

“The interaction prompt never appears.”

Give her more distance and more encounters. A first sighting is not necessarily the recruitment moment. Leave the area, continue normal exploration and revisit while keeping weapons holstered. The prompt becomes available only after the peaceful-contact sequence progresses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I cannot give her a gun.”

Confirm that the weapon is actually in your inventory and that you are using the companion interaction that opens her inventory. Virginia accepts the pistol and shotgun; the shotgun is identified in the VIP Keycard area, so it may not be obtainable until that point in progression.

“She is not shooting.”

Virginia acts autonomously and does not follow a direct combat command list. Make sure the weapon was equipped through her inventory, then give her time and a suitable encounter. Her behavior is independent, so she may guard, forage or relax instead of immediately engaging every enemy.

“Her GPS icon is gone.”

Check that you selected an icon and completed the handoff of the GPS Locator. Then open the GPS Tracker and search for that selected symbol. If she has moved, the marker will be away from the recruitment site. A locator mounted on a stick is stationary; a locator given to Virginia follows her.

“She died. Can I restore her?”

The available companion information does not establish a guaranteed method for recovering Virginia after permanent death. If she is merely downed, use the revive interaction immediately. For achievement-focused play, keep manual or backup saves and avoid risky attacks near her.

A practical Virginia setup

  1. Recruit patiently: Approach unarmed, let her leave when she wants and repeat the encounter until the prompt appears.
  2. Open her inventory: Use the interaction prompt to establish her as a companion.
  3. Mark her: Select a distinctive GPS Locator icon, then give her the locator.
  4. Arm her: Equip the pistol and shotgun when available; the companion reference says her shots do not consume ammunition.
  5. Plan around autonomy: Use her for defense, scouting and foraging, but do not expect Kelvin-style task commands.
  6. Protect the achievement: Avoid friendly fire, revive her when downed and keep both Virginia and Kelvin alive through the story’s ending.

This setup gives you a visible, armed companion without turning her into a manually controlled squad member. The GPS marker handles location, the inventory handles equipment and your behavior handles the most important variable: whether she trusts you and survives.
