Which Pixel models are usually supported
Google’s DP images are commonly released for recent Pixels (for example Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, and Pixel 6a depending on the release cycle). If your exact model isn’t listed on the download page, don’t force it—use the correct build for your device codename.

How Developer Preview installs differ from stable updates
Developer Preview installs generally replace system images (and sometimes vendor/boot partitions). That means you should treat it like a “reflash” event, not a small OTA update—backup matters.
Prerequisites (don’t skip these)
Before you download anything, make sure you meet the hardware and account requirements. The most common failure is avoidable: bootloader not unlocked or the wrong image for your exact Pixel model.
1) Backup your data
Flashing images usually wipes data. If you need your photos, authenticator apps, or app data, back up now. On many Pixel devices, you can use Google One backup, but assume flashing can still require a full re-sign-in afterward.
Recommended Free Tools
2) Confirm you can unlock the bootloader
On your Pixel, go to Settings > About phone and tap Build number 7 times to enable Developer options.
Then enable OEM unlocking and USB debugging:
- Settings > System > Developer options > OEM unlocking (toggle ON)
- Settings > System > Developer options > USB debugging (toggle ON)
If OEM unlocking is disabled or unavailable, the bootloader may be locked by policy (common on work-managed devices). You’ll need to resolve that before proceeding.
3) Install required tools (choose one method)
You’ll use either:
- Android Flash Tool (browser-based; also needs ADB access)
- Manual fastboot (requires platform-tools and the correct image files)
If you go manual, download the latest platform-tools (from the Android SDK Platform-Tools package) and verify you have adb and fastboot available.
4) Charge and cable considerations
Keep your Pixel at least 50% battery, preferably plugged in during flashing. Use a reliable USB cable and try a different port if the computer can’t consistently detect the device.

Android Flash Tool is usually the smoothest path because it handles device communication and flashing steps through a guided web interface. It also reduces the chance of flashing the wrong sequence.
Step 1: Open Android Flash Tool
On your computer, open the official Android Flash Tool page from Google (the common entry point is the Flash Tool web interface hosted by Google). Make sure you’re using a trusted browser session and that pop-ups/permissions aren’t blocked.

In Android Flash Tool, choose your device from the supported list, then follow the prompts to authorize the computer. If the web UI asks for permissions, accept them.
Step 4: Select the Android 16 Developer Preview build
If the tool supports the DP build directly, select Android 16 Developer Preview and the matching device model/variant.
If the tool offers an option to provide an image package, use the DP images that correspond to your Pixel model and the specific DP version you downloaded.
Step 5: Flash and let it finish
Start the flashing process. Do not disconnect the device mid-flash. Flashing can take several minutes and may show multiple progress stages.
Step 6: Reboot and set up
When flashing completes, the device may reboot automatically. If it doesn’t, use the on-screen instructions (or power/reboot options) to restart.
After the first boot, expect a longer setup than a normal update. Sign in and verify core features like cellular data and Wi-Fi.
Method 2: Install manually with fastboot (fully offline/control)
Manual flashing is the most controlled option, especially if you downloaded images already or want to avoid browser tool issues. It’s also the method most likely to fail if you mismatch files or order the commands incorrectly.

Step 1: Download the correct Android 16 DP image package
Download the official Android 16 Developer Preview build for your specific Pixel model and region/variant (if specified). Use the official file set from Google or the developer download source for that DP.
Extract the archive on your computer and keep the folder structure intact.
Step 2: Boot your Pixel to fastboot mode
- Power off the Pixel.
- Enter bootloader/fastboot mode (typical: Power + Volume Down, then choose fastboot).
- Connect USB to your computer.
Step 3: Verify your computer sees the device
Open a terminal in the directory where you can run platform-tools, then run:
fastboot devices
You should see a device ID. If you don’t, fix drivers/cables before continuing.
Step 4: Flash partitions
Different DP packages include different scripts (like flash-all) and different partition layouts. If the image package includes an official flash script, prefer it.
Option A: Use the provided script (simplest)
Many official image packages include a script:
- Linux/macOS:
./flash-all.sh - Windows:
flash-all.bat
Run the script from the extracted directory. It will typically unlock requirements, flash partitions, and reboot.
Option B: Manual fastboot commands (when scripts aren’t provided)
If there’s no script, you’ll need to flash the images that match the package instructions. The filenames usually include items like:
boot.imginit_boot.img(when applicable)system.imgvendor.imgproduct.imgodm.img(if present)radio.imgor modem partitions (rare for some DP flows)
Use exact command examples only if they match the partition table for your device. A safe pattern is:
- Reboot bootloader (optional):
fastboot reboot-bootloader - Flash images for each partition (in the order provided by Google’s instructions or the image package README)
- Wipe/format partitions if required by the package (some packages do this implicitly)
- Reboot to system:
fastboot reboot
If you’re unsure about which partitions to flash, stop and use the official script or the README included with the DP package.

Step 5: First boot can take longer than expected
After flashing, the system may optimize apps during first boot. This can look like it’s stuck. Give it time—commonly 5–15 minutes, depending on the device and build.
Verify the install and confirm you’re on Android 16 Developer Preview
Once the phone boots, verify that the build you installed is the one you expect. This avoids the common “it flashed but isn’t the DP build” problem.
Check build info
- Open Settings > About phone
- Tap Android version (or look for Build number)
Look for an Android 16 Developer Preview label and the build fingerprint/version that matches the DP package you downloaded.
Confirm key system behaviors
Test basics immediately:
- Wi-Fi connects and passes captive portals (if applicable)
- Cellular/SMS works (if you use a phone line)
- Bluetooth audio pairing works
- Camera opens and can capture photo/video
Rollback options if Android 16 DP is unstable
Developer Previews can be buggy. If you hit critical problems (boot loops, radio issues, battery drain, broken sensors), rolling back is often faster than trying incremental fixes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOption 1: Reflash the previous DP build (if available)
If you prefer staying on DP but with a more stable build, download the prior DP image for your exact Pixel model and reflash using the same method.
Option 2: Flash the latest stable factory image
Google typically provides factory images for Pixel devices. Download the stable factory image for your model, then flash it via Android Flash Tool or manual fastboot.
This is the most reliable recovery path after DP instability—plan for a full data wipe.
Option 3: If OTA was supported, move via update channels
Some devices receive OTA updates for beta/developer programs. If the DP build came through an OTA-enabled channel, you might downgrade/upgrade through system update prompts. Don’t rely on this unless the release notes confirm OTA paths for your device.
Troubleshooting (common failures and fixes)
Most flashing issues come down to connectivity, permissions, or mismatched images. Here are the fastest checks that usually resolve them.

Device not detected in fastboot
Symptoms: fastboot devices returns nothing or Android Flash Tool can’t find the Pixel.
- Try a different USB cable (data-capable) and a different USB port.
- On Windows, check device manager for the correct driver binding.
- Restart the phone in bootloader mode again and re-run detection.
- Close other tools that might be holding the USB connection.
Flashing fails with a partition/mismatch error
Symptoms: Errors during system or vendor flashing, or fastboot complains about image compatibility.
- Confirm you downloaded the build for the exact Pixel model/codename.
- Confirm the package matches the DP version (for example DP1 vs a later DP drop).
- Re-extract the archive to ensure files weren’t corrupted.
Boot loop or stuck at boot animation
Symptoms: Continuous reboot, or the boot animation never completes.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Reflash using the same DP package (a failed or partial flash can cause loops).
- If the package provided a script, use it to ensure the correct wipe/flash order.
- If instability is severe, switch to a stable factory image and reflash.
Bootloader relock prompts or OEM unlocking missing
If OEM unlocking is unavailable or relock-related prompts appear, it usually indicates policy restrictions or a previously changed boot state. Re-check OEM unlocking toggle and ensure your bootloader is in the expected state before flashing.
After flashing: Wi-Fi or cellular isn’t working
What to try:
- Reboot once fully (not just restart apps).
- Toggle airplane mode off/on.
- Forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect.
- If only cellular fails, rollback to the stable factory image to rule out DP modem/radio regressions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong image package. A single model/codename mismatch can cause flash errors or a broken boot.
- Skipping OEM unlocking checks. Even when you enter fastboot, flashing may fail or produce unexpected results.
- Unplugging mid-flash. Treat the process like a firmware write—never interrupt it.
- Assuming it’s an OTA. Developer Previews are often more invasive than you expect.
- Not backing up. Plan for data loss, including authentication apps and 2FA re-enrollment.
FAQ
Will installing Android 16 Developer Preview wipe my Pixel?
Flashing system images often wipes data. Even if a particular flow claims to preserve data, treat it as non-guaranteed and back up first.
Can I install Android 16 DP and then uninstall it?
Yes, but you’ll typically “uninstall” by flashing a stable factory image (rollback) or a previous DP build. That usually wipes data again.
Do I need to unlock the bootloader?
For most Developer Preview flashing methods, yes. If you can’t unlock the bootloader due to device policy or restrictions, you may not be able to install the DP images.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which method should I use: Flash Tool or manual fastboot?
Use Android Flash Tool if it supports your build and your setup is compatible. Use manual fastboot when you need full control, prefer offline work, or the web tool can’t access your device reliably.
What if my Pixel still boots but feels broken?
Reboot fully once, then test cellular/Wi-Fi/camera. If core functions are consistently failing, rollback to the stable factory image—DP regressions are real, and they’re faster to fix with a clean stable reflash.
Bottom Line
To install the Android 16 Developer Preview on Google Pixel, prioritize correct device compatibility, prepare for a data wipe, and use the official DP images for your exact model. If you want the least friction, Android Flash Tool is usually the best route.
If the preview becomes unstable, rollback is straightforward: reflash a stable factory image for your Pixel. That combination—clean install plus a known recovery path—is how you keep early access from turning into a long outage.
