VSCO’s Film 02 preset Pack available for Adobe Lightroom

VSCO Film 02 is one of the most recognizable “film-style” looks in the VSCO ecosystem, built to give images a distinct contrast curve, softened highlights, and a cohesive color response. If you shoot RAW and edit in Adobe Lightroom, you can recreate that aesthetic using the VSCO Film 02 preset pack.

This guide focuses on getting the Film 02 preset pack working in Adobe Lightroom reliably—covering both Lightroom Classic and the modern Lightroom app—then tuning the preset so it actually fits your lighting instead of fighting it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What the VSCO Film 02 preset pack is (and what it changes)

A preset is a saved set of Develop adjustments. The VSCO Film 02 pack typically includes one or more preset variants that adjust things like tonal curve, contrast, saturation, selective color behavior, and grain/texture-related settings (depending on the exact pack you downloaded).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, Film 02 is designed to:

  • Change contrast shape (often reducing harsh micro-contrast in shadows while retaining a clean midtone roll-off).
  • Shift color response so skin, foliage, and skies land in a particular VSCO-like palette.
  • Add or emphasize texture (grain/clarity-style effects), which makes the image feel less “digital-flat.”

The exact sliders differ by preset version, so treat Film 02 as a starting point—not a guarantee for every camera, lens, or light source.

Before you install: prerequisites and compatibility checks

Preset compatibility mainly depends on the file format and the Lightroom app you’re using. VSCO preset packs are commonly distributed as XMP preset files (and sometimes as Lightroom template formats). Your goal is to place the preset files where your Lightroom version can read them.

Check your Lightroom type first

  • Lightroom Classic (desktop, catalogs, traditional Develop module): supports classic preset folders and reads XMP presets cleanly.
  • Lightroom (cloud desktop + web + mobile workflows): supports limited preset importing depending on current features and platform.

Verify you have RAW or a supported working format

Film presets usually look best on RAW (e.g., CR2, NEF, ARW, RAF). You can apply them to JPEG, but the color response may feel less accurate because the camera has already baked in processing.

Update to a recent app build

Adobe’s preset import behavior has changed across major releases. If you’re on an older build, update Lightroom Classic first and then try the install again. (For example, Lightroom Classic 13.x+ has been notably more consistent with preset scanning than some earlier releases.)

Where to get the VSCO Film 02 preset pack

To keep the workflow legal and intact, download presets from VSCO’s official channels or any vendor/license partner they provide. Avoid random file-hosting mirrors; they’re often missing files, contain broken folder structures, or include mislabeled preset variants.

When you download the Film 02 preset pack, confirm the archive contains either:

  • XMP files (common for Lightroom Classic), or
  • a template/preset structure that includes identifiable preset files and folders.

Install method for Lightroom Classic (XMP workflow)

Lightroom Classic is the easiest place to run VSCO Film 02 presets. The app scans specific preset directories and makes new presets available in the Develop module.

Step 1: Extract the downloaded pack

Unzip the VSCO Film 02 preset download. You should see one or more preset files (often ending in .xmp) and sometimes a folder structure.

  • Also compatible with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and the EOS M Compact System Mirrorless Camera EF-M 18-55mm IS STM zoom lenses.

Step 2: Find the Lightroom Classic preset folder

Use Lightroom Classic’s built-in “Show Lightroom Presets folder” option.

  1. Open Lightroom Classic.
  2. Go to Edit (Windows) or Lightroom Classic (macOS) in the top menu.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Open the Presets tab.
  5. Click Show Lightroom Presets Folder.

A file explorer window opens to the correct directory.

Step 3: Copy Film 02 presets into the correct subfolder

Inside the presets folder, you’ll typically find categories like Develop Presets. Copy the Film 02 .xmp files into the matching Develop preset directory.

If your extracted folder includes subfolders, preserve the structure when copying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Restart Lightroom Classic if needed

Lightroom Classic often detects new presets automatically, but if Film 02 doesn’t appear immediately, restart the app.

Step 5: Locate and apply the preset

  1. Go to the Develop module.
  2. Open the Presets panel on the left.
  3. Find VSCO (or the vendor name your presets use) and then Film 02.
  4. Click the preset to preview, then apply.

If it’s listed, you’re done. If it’s not listed, use the troubleshooting section below.

Install method for Adobe Lightroom (cloud/web and desktop)

Adobe Lightroom (the app synced to the cloud) handles presets differently than Lightroom Classic. Depending on your exact Lightroom version, you may be able to import presets, or you may be forced into a Classic workflow to use VSCO Film 02.

Method A: Desktop Lightroom preset import (if supported in your build)

Look for preset import options in the app’s Presets management UI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Adobe Lightroom on desktop.
  2. Go to the Edit workspace.
  3. Open Presets.
  4. Choose Add or Import (the exact label varies by version).
  5. Select the .xmp preset(s) from the VSCO Film 02 pack.
  6. Save/import and confirm Film 02 appears in Presets.

If you do not see any import option, your Lightroom build likely doesn’t support manual preset imports in the way Lightroom Classic does.

Method B: Use Lightroom Classic as the preset engine, then sync exports

If Lightroom desktop can’t import VSCO presets, the most reliable workaround is to apply Film 02 in Lightroom Classic and then sync the edited result (or export the edited file).

  1. Apply VSCO Film 02 in Lightroom Classic.
  2. Confirm the edit looks right on your target image.
  3. Use Export (for final delivery) or Sync (if your workflow supports it).

This approach preserves the preset look more consistently than trying to recreate it with manual sliders.

How to apply Film 02 and tune it to your photo

Even when the preset installs correctly, your image may need small adjustments because Film 02 is sensitive to exposure and white balance. Think of Film 02 as a “base profile,” not a final grade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step tuning checklist

  1. Set exposure first: adjust Exposure or Brightness so highlights aren’t crushed.
  2. Fix white balance next: use Temperature and Tint to prevent skin tones from going too green or too orange.
  3. Correct highlight/shadow clipping: use Highlights and Shadows before changing contrast further.
  4. Adjust contrast curve tastefully: if the preset feels too punchy, back off Contrast or Blacks.
  5. Fine-tune saturation and vibrance: Film presets can oversaturate certain colors under high-contrast daylight.

Create your own “Film 02 — Your Name” variant

Once you nail the look for a specific camera/light setup, save it as a new preset in Lightroom Classic. That gives you consistency across future photos.

  • Apply Film 02.
  • Adjust only the sliders you want to keep “locked.”
  • Create a new preset and name it with a useful clue (e.g., “Film 02 / Warm daylight / DNG”).

Best practices: export settings and color consistency

Presets work best when your export settings don’t undo the work you just did. If you export with the wrong color space or overly aggressive sharpening, Film 02 can look different than it does in Lightroom.

Troubleshooting when Film 02 presets do not show up

If Film 02 isn’t visible after copying the files, it’s almost always one of three things: wrong folder, wrong file type, or Lightroom hasn’t refreshed its preset index.

Problem: presets don’t appear in Lightroom Classic

  1. Confirm the preset files are .xmp (or the exact format your pack includes).
  2. Verify you copied them into the folder Lightroom Classic is actually using (use Show Lightroom Presets Folder again).
  3. Restart Lightroom Classic.
  4. Check that the preset category is correct (Develop presets vs other preset types).

Problem: presets appear, but look “wrong”

That usually comes from exposure/white balance mismatch rather than broken installation. Try:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Reset the preset by applying it again after you set white balance.
  • Compare on a RAW file (not an already JPEG-processed version).
  • Check if your image has a different lens profile or calibration that can change the final look.

Problem: Lightroom (cloud/app) won’t import or apply presets

Some Lightroom builds restrict manual preset importing. In that case, use Lightroom Classic to apply Film 02 and then sync/export the result.

Problem: only some Film 02 variants show up

Some downloads include multiple preset files and smart-collections metadata. If your archive was incomplete, you may see only part of the pack. Re-download the pack from the official source and confirm every preset file is present after extraction.

Common mistakes that ruin the look

  • Applying Film 02 before correcting white balance: warm shots can turn too orange, and cool shots can drift green.
  • Overexposing to “save highlights”: film-style presets can intensify highlight roll-off in ways that look harsh if exposure is too high.
  • Ignoring calibration and profile differences: camera profiles (or lens corrections) can change the base color mapping.
  • Exporting in the wrong color space: sRGB vs Adobe RGB mismatches can shift saturation and warmth.
  • Using heavy texture/grain on top of Film presets: stacking grain + clarity can make images look crunchy instead of film-like.

Alternatives if you can’t install VSCO presets

If your Lightroom setup won’t accept the Film 02 files, you still have options.

Option 1: Build a “closest match” manually using Lightroom sliders

Start by applying Film 02 in Lightroom Classic (where it works), then note the resulting slider positions. After that, recreate those values in the app where you can’t import presets. It’s slower, but it’s reliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 2: Use a DNG/profile style workflow

If the VSCO pack includes any calibration-like behavior (or if you can match the effect via lens/camera profile choices), you can approximate the look by adjusting calibration and color mix (red/green/blue channels) rather than relying on a preset import.

FAQs

Is the VSCO Film 02 preset pack compatible with Lightroom Classic?

Most VSCO preset packs distribute as XMP files that Lightroom Classic supports. If your download includes .xmp, it’s typically compatible once placed in the correct Develop preset folder.

Can I use Film 02 presets in Lightroom (cloud/web)?

Sometimes, depending on your Lightroom build, you’ll see preset import options. If you don’t, use Lightroom Classic to apply the preset, then sync/export the graded result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Film 02 look different on my photos than in examples?

Lighting and camera settings matter. The same preset can produce very different color and contrast depending on exposure, white balance, and whether your source is RAW vs JPEG.

Do presets replace my original edits?

No. Presets apply a set of adjustments on top of your current edit state. You can tweak further, remove the preset, or reset edits to return to the starting point.

How do I keep Film 02 consistent across a whole set?

Use the same starting exposure and white balance strategy for your batch. Then save a “your version of Film 02” preset after you dial it in once.

Bottom Line

The VSCO Film 02 preset pack can be a fast, repeatable way to get a film-inspired look in Adobe Lightroom—especially with Lightroom Classic, where XMP installation is straightforward and predictable. Once it’s installed, the real work is tuning exposure and white balance so the preset complements your specific images.
