Steam’s standard Linux client is documented for x86_64/AMD64, not as a native ARM64 app. On ARM Linux, installation depends on a platform-specific compatibility stack or an emulation project; there is no general Valve command sequence for every ARM device and distribution. If Steam is installed but will not open on a supported x86_64 system, start by checking OpenGL drivers and 32-bit graphics support.
Check your CPU architecture before installing Steam
Open a terminal and run:
uname -m
aarch64orarm64means the system is ARM64.x86_64means it is a 64-bit x86 system.
Valve’s Steam for Linux requirements specify a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 Linux kernel and list both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers. Its documented Debian package workflow is for Debian- and Ubuntu-style systems; it is not a native ARM64 installer. Don’t assume that apt install steam will provide a supported ARM installation.

How to install Steam on ARM Linux
There are two distinct routes in the available documentation. Neither establishes that the ordinary Steam client works on every ARM board, distribution, or game.
Steam Frame: Valve’s platform-specific ARM route
Valve’s Steam Frame compatibility documentation describes an Arm64 Snapdragon platform using FEX to translate x86 instructions for Arm64 and Proton to run Windows games on Linux. This describes the Steam Frame compatibility stack, not general support for installing Steam on arbitrary ARM Linux computers.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Ergonomic Design】-Scientific ergonomic design encourages healthy neutral "handshake" wrist and arm positions for smoother movement and less overall strain
- 【More Adjustment】-800 / 1200 / 1600 DPI Resolution Optical Tracking Technology provides more sensitivity than standard optical mice for smooth and precise tracking on a wide range of surfaces.
- 【Useful Page Buttons】-Added next/previous buttons provide convenience when webpage browsing; the superior choice for internet surfers, gamers and people who work at length at the computer.
- 【Smart Dormancy】-Enters power saving mode (power is cut off completely) after 8 minutes idle, Press right or left button for it to wake.
- 【Wide Compatibility】-Compatible with Windows 8/7/10 / Vista / XP / 2000, Mac OS, Linux (NOTE: the forward and backward buttons are not recognized on Mac). Plug and play.
Box64: an experimental project route
The Box64 Steam guide outlines an emulation-based setup. It says Linux Steam needs Box86 or Box32 and binfmt enabled. These are additional compatibility components, so this route is more involved than installing the standard client on its documented x86_64 platform. Follow the current Box64 instructions for your specific device and distribution rather than copying a generic command sequence: prerequisites and compatibility can vary.
Box64’s guide also notes that systems with less than 6 GB of RAM may need swap for optimal performance. Treat this as project-specific setup guidance, not a general performance guarantee or a promise that Steam or a particular game will run well.

| Approach | Architecture and scope | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Steam for Linux | Valve documents x86_64/AMD64 and 32-bit graphics-driver requirements. | Use the documented Debian/Ubuntu-style package workflow only on a compatible x86_64 system. |
| Steam Frame compatibility stack | Valve documents Arm64 support specifically for Steam Frame. | FEX and Proton are part of that platform’s approach; this does not establish universal ARM Linux support. |
| Box64 project setup | Project guidance for an emulation-based Linux Steam setup. | Requires Box86 or Box32 and binfmt according to the guide; compatibility and setup vary by device and distribution. |
What to try if Steam will not launch
First distinguish a client startup failure from a game that fails after Steam opens. The following graphics check applies to an x86_64 Linux installation; it does not turn the standard client into a supported native ARM64 app.
Check OpenGL and 32-bit graphics support
Valve’s Linux startup troubleshooting guidance identifies missing or faulty OpenGL drivers as a common cause of Steam startup problems. It recommends checking whether a 32-bit OpenGL program works. On Ubuntu, install the mesa-utils:i386 package if needed, then run glxinfo to inspect OpenGL information. If OpenGL is unavailable or the 32-bit check fails, address the graphics driver or 32-bit graphics libraries before investigating individual games.

Account for Flatpak and Snap packaging
Valve’s Steam for Linux issue tracker documentation notes that Flatpak and Snap packages are not officially supported by Valve. Containerized packages can also depend on user namespaces and compatible sandbox and filesystem behavior. These conditions may matter when the Steam client opens but a runtime or game does not; check the packaging project’s own guidance for the distribution and installation you use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Steam opens but a game fails
Collect enough detail to separate a game-specific problem from a runtime, graphics, or client issue. Record the distribution and version, CPU architecture, GPU and driver, Steam installation format, game title, and whether Steam itself launches. Then collect the relevant logs rather than applying a launch option intended for a different failure.
Capture runtime and Proton logs
Valve’s Steam Linux Runtime documentation describes STEAM_LINUX_RUNTIME_LOG=1 for runtime logging and PROTON_LOG=1 for Proton logging. For a Proton game, enable the relevant logging, reproduce the failure, and use the resulting information to narrow down whether the problem is in the runtime, graphics stack, or title. Consult the game’s Proton compatibility reports when interpreting a game-specific failure; a log flag alone cannot establish that a title is supported on a particular ARM setup.
