You can install Steam locally only on select Chromebook models through Google’s Steam for Chromebook Beta. Update ChromeOS, then open the Launcher and search for Steam installer. If it appears under Apps, select it and follow the prompts. If it does not appear, Google says your device does not meet the Beta requirements.
Can you install Steam on your Chromebook?
Only some Chromebook models are eligible for Google’s Steam for Chromebook Beta. Google lists minimum specifications of an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage, but meeting those minimums alone does not confirm eligibility. Your exact model must also appear on Google’s supported-device list, which Google says changes as support rolls out.

Check both your Chromebook’s specifications and its exact model or codename against Google’s list. The supported devices page currently names models from Acer, Asus, Dell, Framework, HP, and Lenovo; availability varies by model.

- Press Ctrl + Search + Esc to view CPU and RAM information.
- Open Settings > Device > Storage Management to check storage.
- To check for the latest ChromeOS update, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates. On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may manage updates.
How to install Steam on a supported Chromebook
- Update ChromeOS: open Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates, then install any available update.
- Open the Launcher and search for Steam installer.
- Under Apps, select Steam installer and follow the on-screen setup prompts.
Google’s official installation instructions are available in Chromebook Help. If the installer is missing from the search results, Google says the Chromebook does not meet the Beta requirements; check the supported-device list rather than trying an unrelated app as a workaround.

Do not use the Play Store apps as the installation route
Google says it does not recommend installing Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store because they can cause performance issues. Those apps are not substitutes for the Chromebook Beta installer.
What to expect from Steam for Chromebook Beta
Steam for Chromebook is labeled Beta in Google’s help information. Google warns of limitations, known bugs, and performance issues that can affect both gameplay and which titles are available. Its list of games that performed well in testing on Chromebooks meeting the minimum requirements is a set of examples, not a guarantee that every listed title—or every Steam game—will work well on every eligible model. Check Google’s current supported games and device information before choosing a game.

If a game runs slowly or displays incorrectly
- Lower the game’s resolution if performance is poor.
- Close other apps and browser tabs that are not needed.
- Try medium or low graphics settings.
- If the game renders at the wrong size or position, try fullscreen mode.
- If you see a “Vulkan shader processing” message, Steam has an Allow background processing of Vulkan shaders setting. Google notes that enabling it may affect battery life.

Can you use a controller with Steam on a Chromebook?
A controller is optional; it is not needed to install Steam. Chromebooks can connect to gaming controllers, and Steam encourages developers to include PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo controller support. Before choosing one, check its connection type and whether the particular game supports it. See Google’s Chromebook gaming guidance and Steam’s controller support information.

What if your Chromebook cannot install Steam?
If your model is not eligible for the Beta, cloud gaming is a separate option for playing some games without downloading them to the Chromebook. Google’s Chromebook gaming guidance names GeForce NOW as one example. Before relying on a service, check whether it supports your device and region, whether your desired game is in its catalog, what account or service conditions apply, and whether your internet connection is reliable enough for streaming.
Local Steam and cloud gaming have different requirements. Local play depends on Chromebook eligibility, the game’s compatibility, and available storage; streaming depends on the service’s supported games and a suitable network connection. Compare those factors against the titles you actually want to play.
