How to Install Software Safely on Windows, Mac, Ubuntu, and Android

The installation steps depend on your device. Choose a trusted source, check compatibility, and follow the instructions for Windows, macOS, Ubuntu, or Android.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To install a program, first identify your device and operating system. Use its official app store or package manager when available; if you download an installer directly, get it from the software publisher’s trusted site, check the program’s system requirements, and follow the installer’s prompts. The exact steps depend on the software and platform.

Before you download

  • Confirm the program supports your operating system and device, and check its system requirements.
  • Prefer the platform’s official store or the software publisher’s trusted download page. Avoid downloads from unfamiliar sites.
  • If the software is linked to an account or license, use the account associated with your purchase or subscription. Microsoft gives these checks for Microsoft 365 in its installation guide.
  • Read prompts before granting administrator access, accepting a license, or making a purchase. Permissions and activation steps vary by program.

Install a program on Windows

You can install Windows software through Microsoft Store or download it from a trusted publisher. For a web download, choose the Windows installer on the publisher’s site, save it, open the downloaded file, and follow the prompts. The installer’s file type and steps vary by program.

From a downloaded installer

Open the disk image or package file in Downloads and follow the installer’s onscreen instructions, as described in Apple’s instructions for installing apps from the internet.

For apps, plug-ins, and installer packages obtained outside the App Store, macOS checks the Developer ID signature. Apple says macOS Catalina and later require notarization by default. If macOS warns about a download, do not bypass the warning unless you have verified that the publisher and file are trustworthy. See Apple’s explanation of safely opening apps on a Mac.

Install software on Ubuntu

Use App Center on Ubuntu Desktop

  1. Open App Center.
  2. Search or browse for the application and select it.
  3. Click Install and authenticate if prompted.

Ubuntu Desktop 24.04’s App Center can offer snap and Debian package formats; when both are available, it may list a snap first. See Ubuntu’s App Center instructions.

Choose the installation route that fits

Route Best fit What to keep in mind
Official app store Apps listed in the store for your platform Platform-integrated installation; availability depends on the app and device.
Publisher’s download Programs offered directly by their publisher Verify the publisher, operating-system version, and system requirements before opening the installer.
Package manager Linux packages and command-line tools, or users who intentionally manage software this way Use commands and packages documented for your distribution; Ubuntu APT instructions do not automatically apply elsewhere.

After installation

Open the program from your app list, Start menu, or desktop launcher. If it does not open, check that the device meets the program’s requirements and that any required account or license is active, then consult the publisher’s official troubleshooting guidance. There is no single fix that applies to every program.
