If by “SAB tool” you mean SABnzbd, the usual Windows setup is to download the stable Windows Installer from the official SABnzbd downloads page, run it, and complete the first-launch quick-start wizard. A portable ZIP is available if you prefer to keep the program and its settings in one folder. This guide is formatted as a web page you can print or save as a PDF using your browser’s Print command.
Download the official Windows package
SABnzbd is free, open-source software. Get it from the official SABnzbd site or go directly to its downloads page. When checked on October 7, 2026, the page listed version 5.1.3 as stable and 5.2.0 Beta2 as a prerelease. Release labels change, so check the page for the current stable version before downloading.

For an ordinary setup, choose the stable Windows Installer. Use a beta only if you specifically want to test a prerelease. Microsoft advises: “You should download and install programs only from trusted publishers and retail websites.”
Install SABnzbd with the Windows Installer
- Open the official downloads page and download the Windows Installer for the stable release.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
- During setup, choose whether to launch SABnzbd when you log in, associate
.nzbfiles with SABnzbd, and create a desktop icon. These choices are optional. - Start SABnzbd after installation. On first launch, complete the quick-start wizard. The wizard guides initial setup; consult the official quick setup guide for the current explanation of that flow.
SABnzbd’s quick-setup page recommends the Windows installer for Windows. The options you select during installation determine whether it starts automatically at login, opens .nzb files by default, or has a desktop shortcut.

Choose between the installer and portable ZIP
| Route | Installer required? | Where settings stay | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Installer | Yes | Not stated in the cited quick-setup instructions. | A conventional Windows setup. |
| Windows Portable ZIP | No; extract the ZIP and run portable.cmd. |
Inside the SABnzbd folder. | A self-contained folder in a location you can write to. |
Use the portable version instead
- Download the Windows Portable ZIP from the official downloads page.
- Extract it into a folder where your Windows account can create and change files.
- Open the extracted folder and run
portable.cmd.
The official portable guide says the configuration stays inside the SABnzbd folder, and notes: “You don’t need to install anything on the PC.” If the portable version cannot communicate over the network or is not reachable as expected, check whether your firewall is blocking its network access.
Windows 10 compatibility and the source-code option
The official pages cited here describe Windows downloads and setup, but do not publish a Windows 10 edition-by-edition compatibility matrix or a specific Windows 10 minimum requirement. They therefore do not establish support for every Windows 10 configuration. For a definitive compatibility answer, check SABnzbd’s current requirements information or ask its maintainers.

Installing from source is a separate route, not the normal Windows setup. SABnzbd’s Windows source-install guide says running the source Python files is not recommended unless you want to try the latest GitHub copy or make changes yourself. That source-install route calls for Python 3.10 or higher and Git for Windows; those requirements should not be assumed to apply to the packaged installer.
