You can install Restreamer with Docker and configure it to publish to YouTube, but the available official documentation does not verify a built-in way to loop a local video file indefinitely. The steps below cover the documented installation and YouTube setup, and make that limitation clear so you do not mistake a continuously connected stream for a repeating video.
What you need before installing
- A Docker-capable host. The official Linux installation guide specifies a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU and a current Linux distribution; this is the documented Linux path, not a statement that every platform has the same requirements. See datarhei’s Linux installation guide.
- A secure, unique password for the Restreamer setup.
- A YouTube account and a valid YouTube streaming ID for the destination.
- Host storage for Restreamer configuration and internal data, plus network access for the services you intend to use.
Install Restreamer with Docker
datarhei’s Quick Start provides this Docker command. It uses the official image and maps configuration and data to host directories so they persist outside the container:

docker run -d --restart=always --rm --name restreamer
-v /opt/restreamer/config:/core/config
-v /opt/restreamer/data:/core/data
-p 8080:8080 -p 8181:8181
-p 1935:1935 -p 1936:1936
-p 6000:6000/udp
datarhei/restreamer:latest
- Run the command on your Docker host. Create or adjust the host-side directories under
/opt/restreamerif your environment requires it. - Open
http://<host-ip>:8080/uiin a browser, replacing<host-ip>with the host’s reachable IP address. The Quick Start’s example useshttp://device-ip:8080/ui. - Complete initial setup and use a secure, unique password.
- Keep the host directories mounted as shown if you want the configuration and internal data stored on the host rather than only inside the container.
The example maps HTTP/HTTPS and RTMP/RTMPS-related ports, plus UDP port 6000 for SRT-related use. Which ports need to be reachable depends on the services you use; datarhei says public port forwarding is needed for full functionality. Do not expose ports to the public internet without understanding your firewall and access controls. The complete example is in the Restreamer Quick Start.
The command uses the tag latest, as does the Quick Start example. That tag can move over time, so it is not a pinned, reproducible version. datarhei recommends its official Docker images and describes them as its most tested installation method; consult its official recommendations when choosing an image and deployment approach.

Configure Restreamer to publish to YouTube
- In Restreamer, create a Publication Service and select YouTube.
- Enter a valid YouTube streaming ID and save the publication settings.
- Start the stream. When Restreamer connects, its main window displays the bitrate.
The destination also needs an active YouTube account. Follow datarhei’s current YouTube publication guide and Publication services documentation for the interface details.
If the source has no sound, Restreamer’s wizard recommends a silent audio channel and notes that some services, including YouTube, require an active audio channel. Treat this as Restreamer’s guidance, not a complete statement of every current YouTube account or stream requirement. See the Restreamer wizard documentation.

Can Restreamer loop a local video file?
The official pages cited here do not establish a built-in local-file repeat setting or document the configuration needed to make a local file restart at its end. The documented wizard covers sources such as network, hardware, Raspberry Pi camera, USB, SRT, and internal RTMP, but that list does not verify a local media-file loop workflow. See the network source documentation.
A publication that remains connected to YouTube is not necessarily replaying its underlying video. Before relying on Restreamer for an unattended loop, confirm against documentation for the specific Restreamer release that it supports repeating a local file and follow its documented source configuration. Do not assume a GUI control, environment variable, FFmpeg option, or Docker Compose setting without that confirmation.
End the YouTube event in the right order
When you finish a live event, end the stream on YouTube before interrupting the Restreamer publication. datarhei warns: “Always end the stream on YouTube first after an event. If you interrupt the stream in the Restreamer during a live stream, YouTube may not save your live stream in the DVR archive.”
Troubleshoot the documented setup
- The web interface does not open: Check that the container started, that you are using the host’s reachable IP address with port 8080 and
/ui, and that host firewall or network rules allow access. - The publication will not connect: Verify that the YouTube account is active, the streaming ID is valid, and the selected Publication Service is saved and started. Check the relevant network exposure and forwarding for your setup.
- The stream has no audio: If the source is silent, Restreamer recommends adding a silent audio channel; verify the requirements for the specific destination and stream as well.
- The event archive is missing: End the event on YouTube before stopping the Restreamer publication to reduce the risk described in datarhei’s warning.
- The video stops instead of repeating: A live publication alone does not prove that the media source loops. The cited documentation does not provide a verified local-file repeat procedure, so check the documentation for your installed release before changing source settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing without leaving a Docker host or home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
