How to Install Resource Packs in Minecraft Java Edition

To install a texture pack in Minecraft: Java Edition, put its downloaded ZIP file in the resource-pack folder opened from the game, then enable it in Options > Resource Packs. Minecraft now calls these files resource packs; “texture pack” remains a familiar name for them.

Install a resource pack in Java Edition

1. Download the resource pack from its publisher or another source you trust. The official example uses a .zip archive; the documented installation process does not require running an installer.

2. Launch Minecraft: Java Edition. From the main menu, select Options, then Resource Packs.

3. Select Open Resource Pack Folder. This opens the folder used by the game, avoiding guesswork about its location across different operating systems, launchers, and game directories.

4. Copy the downloaded .zip file into the opened folder.

5. Close the folder window and return to Minecraft. Under Available Resource Packs, select the pack to enable it.

Mojang’s Java texture installation instructions describe this workflow. Their example was made for Minecraft 1.12, so it should not be treated as current compatibility guidance.

Check whether the pack matches your Minecraft version

Before relying on a pack, check the Minecraft version named by its publisher and the compatibility indication shown by the game. Resource-pack formats can change between releases: the Java Edition 26.1 release notes list resource-pack version 84 and describe related format changes. That version number is a format identifier, not a Minecraft version number to choose when downloading a pack.

If the resource pack does not appear

• Return to Options > Resource Packs and check Available Resource Packs.

• If it is missing, reopen Open Resource Pack Folder and confirm that the downloaded ZIP was copied into that folder.

• If it still does not appear, or Minecraft reports a compatibility problem, compare the pack’s stated target version with the version of Minecraft you are running. Mojang’s example targets 1.12, while newer releases can use different resource-pack formats.
