Most Android security problems are easier to avoid than to fix. Don’t install apps from sources you can’t verify, ignore security alerts, or leave your data without a recoverable backup. Other habits—such as using public Wi-Fi—carry risks that depend on the situation, not an automatic guarantee that your phone is compromised.
Android menus and features vary by version and manufacturer. If a setting below isn’t where it’s described, search for its name in Settings.

1. Don’t install apps from sources you can’t verify
Apps from outside familiar, trusted sources aren’t necessarily malicious, but they may not have been vetted and can carry greater risk. Google advises downloading apps from a source you trust. If you need an app that isn’t available in a store you know, independently verify both the developer and the site offering the download. Don’t rely on a link sent by an unknown person or a look-alike page. Google’s Android security guidance explains the risks of apps from unknown sources.

A message claiming to be about a delivery, voicemail, or technical support may be an attempt to get you to install a harmful app. Don’t use the message’s link or phone number to verify the claim. Contact the organization using a website or number you already know is official. Google describes these unsolicited-message tactics in its guidance on harmful apps.

3. Don’t grant permissions without checking why they’re needed
An app should have access only to the information or capabilities needed for its actual purpose. A map app may need location while you navigate; a simple utility may have no clear reason to access your contacts. When a permission request appears, consider whether the app’s core function depends on it and choose a more limited option if Android offers one. You can review app permissions in Settings; Android also resets permissions for some apps you haven’t used in a while. See Google’s explanation of app permissions.
4. Don’t enable sensitive settings for an app you don’t trust
Some settings grant an app unusually broad capabilities. Accessibility access, for example, can let an app read screen content and interact with other apps on your behalf. Treat a request to enable it—or to change another sensitive setting—as a reason to pause and check whether the app is trustworthy and genuinely needs that access. If the request came from an unexpected message or a purported support contact, don’t proceed. Google warns that harmful apps may ask users to change settings in ways that put data at risk in its harmful-app guidance.

5. Don’t turn off Google Play Protect without a good reason
Play Protect is built into Google Play, is on by default, and checks apps and devices for harmful behavior. Keeping it enabled preserves a useful layer of protection, but it does not guarantee that every threat will be detected. You can find its settings in the Play Store under your profile menu, then Play Protect. Google outlines how it works in Play Protect help.
6. Don’t ignore available system and app updates
Updates can include security fixes and patches, so install available updates rather than leaving them indefinitely pending. Update timing depends on the phone, manufacturer, carrier, and software version; there is no single schedule that applies to every Android device. Check Settings for System update or search Settings for “update,” and update apps through the store you use. Google recommends installing available security updates in its Android security guidance and Android update help.

7. Don’t leave your phone without a screen lock
A screen lock helps prevent casual access if your phone is misplaced or left unattended. Set a secure lock method and configure the phone to lock automatically after a suitable period. The best method and available options differ among devices, so choose from the options your phone supports rather than relying on one universal PIN or biometric recommendation. Google recommends locking the screen when the device isn’t in use in its Android security advice.
8. Don’t assume a public Wi-Fi password makes the network private
A password can control who joins a hotspot, but it does not by itself establish that the network is encrypted or trustworthy. Google cautions: “Be careful about using public or free WiFi, even if it requires a password.” That is a warning to assess the network, not proof that every public hotspot is compromised. Avoid entering sensitive information on a network you don’t trust. Google Safety Center’s security tips describe this risk.

9. Don’t leave important data without a backup you can restore
A backup can help you recover photos, messages, files, and settings after a device problem or when moving to another phone, but what is included depends on your setup. Check that backup is turned on, which Google account it uses, what categories are covered, and whether you have the storage needed. Don’t assume that seeing a backup option means every item on the phone is saved. Google explains Android backup and restore in its backup and restore help.

Review your installed apps and remove ones you no longer need or cannot confidently identify. Uninstalling an unnecessary app reduces clutter and the number of apps with potential access to your data; it isn’t a guarantee against malware or other security problems. If you’re unsure what an app does, check its name and developer before deciding whether to keep it. Google recommends reviewing and removing apps that aren’t needed or trusted in its Android security guidance.

11. Don’t install a modified or rooted Android build without understanding its security model
Modified Android versions vary, so their risks are not identical. Google says modified versions do not receive automatic security updates from Google and may allow apps unrestricted access to device data. Before installing one, understand who provides its security fixes, how updates reach your device, and what protections may be lost. If you depend on automatic updates and standard app protections, an unfamiliar build can undermine those expectations. Read Google’s guidance on modified Android versions.
12. Don’t dismiss Android’s security and privacy alerts
Open the Security & privacy area in Settings when it flags an issue. Depending on your device and Android version, it can surface information about app security, the device lock, account security, system updates, device finding, and privacy. The layout and availability vary, so search Settings for “Security & privacy” if you don’t see that exact menu. Treat an alert as a prompt to investigate and follow the relevant setting or help page, not as proof by itself that your device has been attacked. Google describes this view in its Security & privacy help.
Android app verification rules are changing in some regions
Google’s developer-verification help describes a rollout beginning in September 2026 for specified app stores and certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with a global rollout across all install sources planned for 2027. These dates and locations are specific to that policy; they do not mean every Android device everywhere is already subject to the same requirements. Check Google’s developer verification help for the current scope.
