On Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble), a source installation follows a predictable sequence: install the compiler and development packages, download and verify a Redis release archive, compile it with the options you need, test the binaries, and then decide whether to run them from the build directory or install them under /usr/local. A source build gives you control over the Redis release, TLS, and modules, but it does not automatically create Ubuntu’s package-managed systemd service.

What a source build changes
Redis publishes a dedicated build workflow for Ubuntu 24.04, and Redis also documents a simpler portable path in which the core server needs only a C compiler and libc. Building from source is useful when you need a particular Redis release, compile-time TLS support, or a selected module set that is not available in the distribution package you would otherwise install.

The trade-off is operational ownership. An APT or Snap installation normally supplies package metadata, standard paths, and service integration. A source build leaves you responsible for recording the release, preserving the source tree, choosing installation paths, creating the service account and data directories, and maintaining the systemd unit and update process.
Before you start
Confirm the platform and privileges
- Use a supported 64-bit Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble) system with network access to Ubuntu package mirrors and the Redis source archive.
- Use an account that can run
sudo. The build itself can run as a normal user, while package installation and installation into/usr/localrequire administrative privileges. - Leave enough space for the archive, extracted source tree, compiler output, and any data directory you will use. Keep the exact release name and build options in your administration records.
Choose the release deliberately
Select a tagged Redis release from the Redis GitHub repository rather than building an arbitrary branch. The configuration files and available build options can vary by release. In particular, the Ubuntu 24.04 instructions state that releases before Redis 8.10 use redis-full.conf where newer instructions use redis.conf for the full configuration.

For a production deployment, decide in advance whether you need only the core server, TLS, modules, or all of those features. The answer determines both dependencies and the command you run later.
Install the Ubuntu 24.04 build dependencies
The complete Noble workflow uses the following package set. It includes the core compiler toolchain, OpenSSL headers for TLS, tools used by the Redis build and module ecosystem, and Python tooling used by parts of the build:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends
ca-certificates wget dpkg-dev gcc g++ libc6-dev libssl-dev make git cmake
python3 python3-pip python3-venv python3-dev unzip rsync clang automake autoconf libtool
For a minimal core build, Redis documents only a C compiler and libc as runtime build prerequisites. The larger command above is the repeatable Ubuntu 24.04 procedure and avoids discovering missing tools halfway through a TLS or module build. The libssl-dev package supplies the OpenSSL development headers required when you compile TLS support.
If you intend to integrate the binary with systemd support compiled into Redis, install the systemd development library as well:
sudo apt-get install -y libsystemd-dev
The Redis repository documents that systemd support needs a library such as libsystemd-dev on Debian and Ubuntu and a corresponding build option. The exact option can differ with the release’s build instructions, so use the option documented by the source tree you selected instead of guessing.
Download and verify the Redis source archive
Download a tagged tarball
Use a system source directory and substitute the tag you selected for <version>:

tar xvf redis-<version>.tar.gz
rm redis-<version>.tar.gz
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
The archive URL follows Redis’s tagged-release layout. The extracted directory name must match the tag you chose; check it with ls -ld /usr/src/redis-* if you are unsure which directory to enter.
Check the release digest
When possible, compare the downloaded archive with the digest published in Redis’s redis-hashes repository. A digest check helps detect an incomplete download or a modified file before a compiler turns it into an installed executable. Keep the archive or its recorded checksum with your deployment notes so a later rebuild can reproduce the same source input.

Do not delete your only copy of the release information after extraction. The source directory is useful for identifying the exact commit, rebuilding after a configuration change, and uninstalling files installed by that build.
Compile Redis from source
Core server and command-line client
From the extracted source directory, the portable core path is:
make
This builds the Redis server and client in the source tree. The resulting binaries are normally under src/. A successful build does not install anything into the operating system and does not create a service.
Build TLS support
Because the dependency step installed OpenSSL headers, you can compile TLS support with:
make BUILD_TLS=yes
Use this build when clients must connect over TLS or when you will configure Redis TLS listeners and certificate files. Compiling TLS support does not by itself enable encryption at runtime; the configuration still has to specify certificates, keys, and the TLS port appropriate to your deployment.
Build modules and the complete data-structure set
The Ubuntu 24.04 all-data-structures example enables TLS, modules, and installation of the Rust toolchain, then uses all available processors:
export BUILD_TLS=yes
export BUILD_WITH_MODULES=yes
export INSTALL_RUST_TOOLCHAIN=yes
make -j "$(nproc)" all
BUILD_WITH_MODULES=yes requests the module build, while INSTALL_RUST_TOOLCHAIN=yes allows the build to install the Rust toolchain needed by components that require it. The Rust installation can take longer and may download additional material, so use it only when your selected release and module set need it. The nproc expression parallelizes compilation according to the CPUs visible to the machine; on a memory-constrained host, reduce the job count if the compiler exhausts RAM.
Environment variables apply to the command that follows them and can persist in your shell. If you switch back to a core-only build, start a fresh shell or unset the variables so an earlier TLS or module choice is not accidentally reused.

Verify the build before installing it
Run the binaries directly from the source tree first. This separates compilation problems from path and service problems:
./src/redis-server --version
./src/redis-cli --version
Both commands should print a version corresponding to the source directory you selected. If they fail with a missing shared library or executable error, resolve the build or dependency issue before copying anything into a system path.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start a test instance
Start Redis from the same directory with the configuration file shipped by that release:
./src/redis-server redis.conf
For a release older than Redis 8.10, use:
./src/redis-server redis-full.conf
Use the file that actually exists in the exact source tree you downloaded. Starting the server this way keeps the process attached to your shell unless the configuration changes its behavior; it is suitable for a local smoke test, not a production service.
In another terminal, run the matching client from the same build:
./src/redis-cli ping
A reachable local server returns PONG. If the client cannot connect, inspect the server terminal for a configuration, port, permission, or address-binding error before changing firewall rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstall the compiled binaries under /usr/local
Once the direct test succeeds, the official source procedure installs the binaries with:
sudo make install
The default destination is /usr/local/bin, which is conventionally reserved for locally managed software and is separate from files owned by Ubuntu’s package manager. The Redis repository also documents the explicit form:

sudo make install PREFIX=/usr/local
After installation, confirm which executable your shell resolves:
command -v redis-server
redis-server --version
command -v redis-cli
redis-cli --version
If /usr/local/bin is not ahead of another Redis location in PATH, invoke the full path or adjust the service and administrator environment explicitly. Do not assume that an existing package installation has been replaced merely because the source build completed.
Remove files from this installation
Record the same prefix and source tree used for installation. The repository documents removal with:
sudo make uninstall PREFIX=/usr/local
Run that command from the matching source tree. It removes files placed by that install; it does not remove data, configuration files you created elsewhere, or an unrelated package-managed Redis installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a source-built Redis as a systemd service
Compiling and installing the binaries does not create an Ubuntu systemd unit. A production service must be designed around the paths and ownership of your source installation rather than copied blindly from a package installation.
Choose the service contract
- Executable: point the unit to the intended
/usr/local/bin/redis-server(or the exact prefix you selected). - Configuration: store a reviewed configuration at a stable path and use the filename appropriate to the release, including
redis-full.conffor the full configuration on releases before 8.10. - Account: run Redis as a dedicated, unprivileged service account rather than as root.
- Data directory: create the directory named by the configuration, assign it to the service account, and restrict access to the account and administrators.
- Logs and persistence: choose whether logs go to journald or a controlled file and confirm that the configured persistence files can be written after a restart.
- Recovery: select a restart policy that matches your availability requirements and prevents a rapid-failure loop from hiding a configuration error.
Account for systemd build support
If your unit relies on Redis’s native systemd integration, build with the release’s documented systemd option and the required libsystemd-dev package. If you do not compile that support, a unit can still launch the executable directly, but its command, readiness behavior, shutdown handling, and restart policy must be written and tested explicitly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not reuse package assumptions
Ubuntu’s package-managed unit, commonly found under /lib/systemd/system/, assumes package-owned executable, configuration, data, and permission paths. A source installation under /usr/local does not automatically satisfy those assumptions. Copying the unit without auditing every path can start the wrong binary, read the wrong configuration, or fail to write its database.
After creating and reviewing your unit, reload systemd, enable the service if it should start at boot, start it, and inspect its status and journal. The exact unit name and file location are choices you make for this installation; keep them documented alongside the Redis release and build flags.
Best Value
Source build versus package or container
| Decision area | Source build | Package or container |
|---|---|---|
| Release and compile flags | Direct control over the tagged release, TLS, modules, and other build choices. | Choices are constrained by the published package or image build. |
| Security updates | You track advisories, rebuild, install, and retire the old binaries yourself. | Package or image tooling generally makes update distribution simpler. |
| Service integration | You create and maintain the account, paths, unit, permissions, and restart behavior. | Managed packages usually provide standard service integration. |
| Reproducibility | Requires recording the source tag, archive digest, dependencies, flags, compiler environment, and prefix. | Package metadata or an image tag supplies a more standardized artifact description. |
| Operational ownership | Your team owns configuration, data directories, upgrades, rollback, and uninstall. | The package or image conventions carry more of that operational structure. |
Choose a source build when a specific release or compile-time feature justifies that ownership. Choose a managed package or container when rapid security updates and conventional service operations matter more than custom build control.
Troubleshoot common failures
make stops on a missing compiler or header
Re-run the Noble dependency command and read the first missing command or header in the compiler output. A later error is often a consequence of the first missing development package. For TLS failures, verify that libssl-dev is installed and rebuild with BUILD_TLS=yes.

The build succeeds but the expected executable is missing
Check that you are in the extracted release directory and inspect src/. Confirm that the shell did not reuse an old source tree or an interrupted build. Run the version checks from that directory before attempting make install.
The configuration file cannot be opened
List the files shipped by the selected release and use its correct name. The full configuration is named redis-full.conf before Redis 8.10; newer releases use the filename documented by that release. Pass an absolute path when launching from a service unit so the result does not depend on systemd’s working directory.
redis-cli ping does not return PONG
Confirm that the server process is still running, that the client and server came from the same build, and that the client is connecting to the address and port configured by the server. Read the server’s startup output for a syntax error, occupied port, permission failure, or bind restriction.
The service starts the wrong Redis binary
Inspect the unit’s executable path rather than relying on an interactive shell’s PATH. Compare that path with command -v redis-server and the version printed by the intended binary. Package and source installations can coexist, so an unqualified command may select the older one.

make uninstall removes files installed by the matching source prefix; it does not remove a systemd unit, service account, configuration, logs, or database files that you created separately. Stop and disable the service, remove only the paths you have backed up and no longer need, and retain the release record for an auditable rollback.
Upgrade and rollback discipline
- Record the current Redis version, archive digest, compile flags, prefix, configuration path, data directory, and service unit.
- Build the new tagged release in a separate source directory rather than overwriting the old tree.
- Run the version checks and a local
PINGtest before changing the service. - Install the new binaries under the chosen prefix only after the test passes, or use a separate versioned prefix if you need an atomic switch.
- Restart the service during a planned window and verify its status, logs, client connectivity, persistence behavior, and module loading.
- Keep the previous binaries and source tree until the new instance has passed your rollback window. If the upgrade fails, point the unit back to the recorded previous executable and configuration, then investigate without deleting the known-good build.
This process keeps the source-built installation distinguishable from Ubuntu packages and makes a later security rebuild or rollback possible without reconstructing undocumented choices.
