Install RDR2 mods only in Story Mode, back up your saves first, and add files to the folder containing RDR2.exe only as the mod author specifies. Script Hook RDR2 and Lenny’s Mod Loader serve different purposes, so check the mod’s requirements rather than installing both by default. Keep Red Dead Online unmodded: Rockstar says online modding can lead to account suspension.
Keep mods out of Red Dead Online
Use mods in Story Mode only. Rockstar’s Mod Guidelines, dated September 10, 2026, include the Red Dead Redemption series and limit multiplayer mod use to Rockstar’s officially licensed creator platform or a license issued directly by Rockstar. The guidelines are not themselves a license. Rockstar Support’s account-impact guidance, last updated May 20, 2024, says violating the Terms of Service by modding online games can trigger account suspension. Do not use mods or mod menus in Red Dead Online.

Before installing: establish a clean starting point
Confirm the game works and note your setup
Launch the game before changing anything. Note its version and whether you use the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or another supported store. Requirements and compatibility can vary, and a working baseline makes it easier to identify what changed if the game later fails.
Back up save files
Make a separate copy of your save files before modding. Rockstar’s clean-install instructions include backing up save-game files as part of recovery. Keep the copy somewhere distinct from the game installation so reinstalling or repairing the game does not remove it. If you have enough space, also keep a restorable copy of the original game files; this is optional, not a modding requirement.
#1 Best Overall
Choose a mod and check its requirements
Use the individual mod page as the authority for its current files, dependencies, installation steps, supported game builds, and removal instructions. Read recent user reports for signs of update-related breakage or conflicts. No download source or file can be assumed risk-free; if your security software flags an archive or file, stop and assess it instead of automatically bypassing the warning.

| Mod type | Common loader path | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
.asi script mod |
Typically requires Script Hook RDR2. | Check the mod’s listed Script Hook version and current game-build compatibility. |
| Replacement-file mod | May use Lenny’s Mod Loader (LML). | Follow the author’s folder structure and any LML requirements. |
| Hybrid mod | May require both Script Hook RDR2 and LML. | Install both only if the mod explicitly requires them. |
| Mod with a custom method | Use the method documented by that mod’s author. | Do not substitute a general-purpose guide for the mod’s specific instructions. |
These are categories, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Loaders and mods can stop working after game updates. Check the current requirements on the mod page and, where relevant, the ScriptHookRDR2 V2 documentation.
Install the mod in the correct folder
- Locate the game root. Find the folder that contains
RDR2.exe. The path depends on your store, install location, and any custom folder choice, so do not assume a sample path from a guide applies to your PC. The RDR2 modding guide uses the executable to identify the game directory. - Read the mod’s file list and instructions again. Identify the exact files to install and which dependencies are required. Do not copy an entire archive if its instructions call for only selected files.
- Install only the required loader and mod files. Preserve the author’s requested folder structure and avoid overwriting unrelated files. A Nexus Mods installation Q&A gives an example of placing a mod’s
.asi,.ini, and.txtfiles in the game directory alongside Script Hook; that example is not a universal recipe. - Keep the original download archive. Retaining it makes it easier to compare, reinstall, or remove the mod using the author’s directions.
- Test in Story Mode. Start the game and check that the mod behaves as expected before adding another. Add mods one at a time, or in small batches, so a conflict is easier to trace.
If the game crashes or a mod does not work
- Undo the last change first. Use the mod author’s removal instructions and remove the most recently added mod or dependency, then test again.
- Recheck compatibility and folders. Confirm that the installed files are in the intended locations and that the mod and its loaders support your current game build.
- Use standard troubleshooting before changing security settings. Rockstar’s RDR2 PC troubleshooting page covers ordinary launch and crash issues, including keeping the Launcher and Windows current. It refers users to antivirus-provider instructions for temporary troubleshooting changes; disabling protection is not a normal mod-install step.
- Restore a clean installation if needed. If removing the mod does not resolve the problem, use Rockstar’s clean-install process and restore your saves from the separate backup if necessary.
Modding can still cause crashes or save problems even when these precautions are followed. Backups, careful file selection, incremental testing, and keeping online play unmodded reduce risk; they do not eliminate it.
