Sometimes—but mainly for casual mobile games and titles that run well on the exact tablet. A tablet’s larger screen can make touch-based games more comfortable, but it is not a dependable substitute if you need smooth performance in demanding games, pocket-sized portability, built-in physical controls, or access to a particular console or PC game library. Check the games you actually want before choosing a device.
What changes when you choose a tablet?
A tablet gives games more screen area, which can be useful when a game benefits from a larger touch interface. The trade-off is its size: compared with a phone or dedicated handheld, a tablet is less pocketable and may be less comfortable to hold for long sessions. Whether that trade-off works depends on where you play and whether your games are designed around touch controls.

The word “budget” does not predict how well a tablet will run games. Chip capability, refresh rate, software and the demands of each title all matter; no single specification guarantees good performance. Android Central’s gaming-tablet guidance identifies processor capability, refresh rate and audio as factors to consider for premium Android games.
How does a tablet compare with a gaming phone or handheld?
| What matters | Budget tablet | Gaming phone | Dedicated handheld |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game access | Depends on the tablet’s operating system, device support and the game. Check the exact title before buying. | Depends on the phone, operating system and game support. A controller does not make an unsupported game compatible. | Best aligned when the games you want belong to that handheld’s console or PC library; check the specific device and titles. |
| Screen and controls | Larger display; often touch-first. A controller may help if the game supports one. | Smaller display and pocketable form. Pairing a controller can make a compatible phone feel more like a mini handheld, as TechRadar describes. | Gaming-specific physical controls are built in, but the layout and game library vary by device. |
| Portability and grip | Less pocketable and less naturally held for handheld play than a phone or dedicated handheld. | Most pocketable of these options. | Designed for handheld play, but size and portability depend on the model. |
| Performance evidence | Varies sharply by model and game; low-cost tablets can struggle with 3D titles. | Depends on the exact phone and game; a gaming label alone is not a performance guarantee. | Depends on the device and its supported library; choose around the games you intend to play. |
The category-level comparisons above are not performance guarantees. For any of the three, verify the games, controls and supported features on the exact model.

Can an inexpensive tablet run demanding games?
Sometimes, but do not assume it will. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 cheap-tablet guide reports that its reviewer struggled to keep basic 3D games smooth on the Motorola MotoPad (2026), despite its Google Play Store access. The same guide reports that the Apple iPad 11 (2025) ran Destiny: Rising at 60 frames per second in the reviewer’s test. Those are findings for particular devices and a particular game—not a promise about every game, settings level or unit.
Tom’s Guide also measured 10 hours and 31 minutes for the MotoPad (2026) in a Wi-Fi web-browsing battery test. That is not a gaming-session result, so it should not be used to predict how long the tablet will last while playing.

What should you check before buying?
- Confirm the game and device combination. Look up each must-have title in the relevant app store and check whether the developer supports the precise tablet and operating-system version. Store access by itself does not prove that a game is available or works well on that device.
- Look for evidence about the actual game. Prefer a review or reliable report that names both the tablet and title. Treat a result for one game as evidence only for that tested combination, rather than as a general rating for all demanding games.
- Check controller support if you want physical controls. Google’s Android game guidance includes controller testing and a reference-device list that can change as hardware and features evolve. A Bluetooth controller is useful only when the specific game supports it; it cannot supply a console library or fix a game that does not run well.
- Match screen size and form to where you play. A tablet may suit a desk, couch or larger touch interface. If you expect to play while commuting or want a device that is easy to hold one-handed, its larger size may be a drawback.
- Compare the full setup. Include any controller or other accessory you would need, then weigh that against a phone or handheld that already fits your preferred controls and game library.
Which option fits your use?
Choose a budget tablet for casual or touch-first play
A tablet is a reasonable choice when your games are available and supported on that model, you value a larger display, and you are comfortable with touch controls or a supported external controller. For demanding 3D games, look for model- and game-specific performance evidence rather than relying on the low price or app-store availability.
Choose a gaming phone for pocketable mobile play
A phone is the more natural fit when portability is central and your target games are mobile titles that run well on that specific phone. A controller can add physical controls for supported games, but it remains an accessory route—not proof that every phone or game behaves like a handheld console.

Choose a dedicated handheld for its controls or library
A dedicated handheld is the stronger match when you want built-in gaming controls or access to titles in that device’s own console or PC library. Tom’s Guide’s tested handheld-console guide organizes options around differing needs and budgets; compare the specific device’s library and controls with what you want to play.

A budget tablet can replace a gaming phone or handheld for some casual, compatible mobile games, especially when a larger screen matters more than portability. It is not a safe all-purpose replacement: performance varies by model and title, external controls work only with supported games, and a tablet does not provide another platform’s library. Decide by checking your must-play games and the exact device first.
