Install Metamod:Source first, then install CounterStrikeSharp, and only then copy plugins into game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins. Restart after each framework change, and verify with meta list and css_plugins list. You can perform every step yourself on a server with file and console access, or let a managed control panel install the frameworks automatically.

How the Counter-Strike 2 plugin stack works
Counter-Strike 2 does not load community plugins from a single built-in mod folder. Most modern server plugins use a two-layer stack:

- CounterStrikeSharp runs the managed plugin framework on top of Metamod.
- Individual plugins or mods are copied into CounterStrikeSharp’s plugins directory.
The CounterStrikeSharp documentation states that it uses Metamod:Source as its main way of communicating with the game server, so both frameworks must be installed. Installing a plugin before these dependencies exist normally results in no plugin being listed, even if the files appear to be in the right directory.
Choose self-hosting or a managed control panel
The installation files are the same, but the amount of administration differs. Self-hosting gives you direct access to the server’s directories, startup configuration, console and logs. A managed host can install the frameworks through a panel, while you still upload individual plugin files and restart the server.

Use self-hosting when you need complete control or already administer a dedicated machine. Use a panel when reducing file-management work is more important than having unrestricted access to the installation.
Prepare the server before installing anything
Confirm access and make a rollback copy
- Have file access to the server’s
game/csgo/directory. - Have access to the server console so you can run
meta listandcss_plugins list. - Stop the server before replacing framework files or changing
gameinfo.gi. - Back up
game/csgo/gameinfo.gi, existing configuration files and any currentaddonsdirectory.
A backup matters because a malformed SearchPaths entry can prevent the server from starting, while a framework update can expose incompatibilities in older plugins.

For a first CounterStrikeSharp installation, use the project’s with-runtime package. It includes the .NET runtime required by the framework. On Windows, install the Visual Studio Redistributables required by the project. On Linux, a non-with-runtime installation may require the distribution’s ICU package, commonly provided as libicu or a similarly named package.
If you deliberately choose a package without the bundled runtime, keep the required .NET runtime current yourself. A server can have correct plugin files and still fail to start the framework when the runtime or a native dependency is missing.
Install Metamod:Source on a self-hosted server
1. Download a current CS2-compatible build
Obtain a current Metamod:Source 2.x build suitable for Counter-Strike 2. Stop the server before extracting files. Do not extract the archive into an extra nested directory; the archive’s addons directory must merge with the server’s existing game/csgo/addons/ directory.

2. Copy the Metamod files
- Open the downloaded archive.
- Copy its
addonsdirectory into<server>/game/csgo/. - Confirm that the resulting path contains Metamod files under
<server>/game/csgo/addons/metamod/.
The VDF files supplied with Metamod must remain in the expected addons/metamod location. Moving only part of the directory or creating a path such as game/csgo/addons/addons/metamod prevents the game from discovering it.
3. Add Metamod to gameinfo.gi
Open <server>/game/csgo/gameinfo.gi in a text editor. In the SearchPaths section, add this line directly beneath Game_LowViolence csgo_lv:
Game csgo/addons/metamodKeep the existing syntax, spacing and braces intact. The important details are the csgo/addons/metamod path and its position immediately below the low-violence game path. Save the file, then start or restart the server.
4. Verify Metamod
After the restart, run this command in the server console:
meta listA working installation shows Metamod as a loaded component. If the console reports that meta is an unknown command, stop and check the file layout and gameinfo.gi edit before installing CounterStrikeSharp. CounterStrikeSharp depends on Metamod, so troubleshooting the next layer first will not fix a missing Metamod installation.

Install CounterStrikeSharp
1. Choose the correct package
Download the CounterStrikeSharp release that matches your server’s current CS2 environment. For a first installation, the documentation says you must use the with-runtime version. This avoids requiring a separate .NET runtime installation at the outset.
2. Extract the framework
- Stop the server.
- Open the CounterStrikeSharp archive and copy its
addonsdirectory into<server>/game/csgo/. - Allow the files to merge with the existing Metamod installation; do not replace or delete unrelated game files.
- On Windows, make sure the Visual Studio Redistributables required by the project are installed.
- Start the server and wait for a complete startup.
A normal installation produces an addons/counterstrikesharp directory containing folders such as api, bin, dotnet, plugins and gamedata. The exact contents can change between releases, but the CounterStrikeSharp directory should be directly under game/csgo/addons/, not inside another copy of addons.
3. Verify CounterStrikeSharp through Metamod
Run:
meta listCounterStrikeSharp should now appear as a loaded plugin. If Metamod loads but CounterStrikeSharp does not, inspect the server log for runtime, operating-system dependency or version errors before copying any community plugin.
Add a plugin or mod
1. Confirm compatibility before downloading
Choose a release that explicitly supports the current Counter-Strike 2 build and the CounterStrikeSharp version installed on your server. A plugin compiled for an older framework can fail after a game update even when its folder and file names are correct. Read the plugin release notes for required dependencies and any configuration files it expects.

2. Preserve the release’s folder structure
Extract the plugin archive locally first. Preserve the structure supplied by its author, then copy the plugin folder into:

<server>/game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins/For example, if an archive contains a folder named ExamplePlugin, the destination should be:
<server>/game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins/ExamplePlugin/Do not accidentally create an additional archive-name directory around it. A common mistake is copying plugins/ExamplePlugin/ into plugins/ExamplePlugin/ExamplePlugin/, leaving the actual plugin files one level too deep.
3. Restart and list active plugins
Restart the server after copying the plugin. Then run:
css_plugins listThe command lists active CounterStrikeSharp plugins. If the plugin is listed, its framework-level loading succeeded; that does not necessarily mean every optional feature is configured, so follow the plugin’s own configuration instructions next.

A managed panel can remove the Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp file-copy steps. The labels below describe the documented workflow; providers can rename controls or change supported versions, so check the panel’s current instructions before relying on them.
- Stop the Counter-Strike 2 server.
- Open the panel’s Config section.
- Set Enable Metamod & CounterStrikeSharp to
true. - Save the configuration.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Open the panel’s Files section and upload the plugin folder to
game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins. - Restart the server again.
- Run
css_plugins listin the console to confirm that the plugin is active.
The panel automation installs the necessary framework files, but it does not make an incompatible plugin compatible. You still need to match each plugin release to the current CS2 and CounterStrikeSharp builds and retain backups of configuration files.

Update the frameworks and plugins safely
CounterStrikeSharp updates
The CounterStrikeSharp upgrade procedure is to download the latest release and copy it over the existing installation. The project designs this process not to overwrite configuration files, but keep your own backup before replacing files. Stop the server during the copy, then restart it and run meta list to confirm that the framework loaded.
Runtime and operating-system updates
- With a with-runtime package, the required .NET runtime is included with that package.
- With a package that excludes the runtime, you must keep the required .NET version installed and current.
- Linux servers may need the distribution’s ICU or
libicupackage for the runtime to start. - Windows servers may need the Visual Studio Redistributables specified by the project.
Plugin updates
Update one plugin at a time when possible. Keep its configuration directory, replace only the release files, restart, and check css_plugins list. If a new release introduces a failure, restoring the previous plugin from your backup identifies whether the change or the framework update caused the problem.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
meta list is an unknown command
- Confirm that
game/csgo/addons/metamodexists on the server, not only on your local computer. - Check that the Metamod VDF files are in the expected
addons/metamodlocation. - Open
game/csgo/gameinfo.giand verify the SearchPaths line is exactlyGame csgo/addons/metamod, directly beneathGame_LowViolence csgo_lv. - Restart after saving the file; the change is not applied to an already-running process.
- Inspect the startup log for a malformed path or an earlier server startup error.
Metamod loads, but CounterStrikeSharp does not
- Check that
addons/counterstrikesharpis directly undergame/csgo/. - For a first installation, replace a runtime-less package with the with-runtime build.
- On Windows, install the project’s required Visual Studio Redistributables.
- On Linux, verify that the required ICU or
libicupackage is installed. - Read the server log for a .NET, native-library or game-build error, then test with a framework release that supports the current CS2 version.
The plugin is missing from css_plugins list
- Verify the final path is
game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins/<plugin-folder>. - Remove an accidental extra nesting level created when extracting the archive.
- Confirm that the plugin release supports the installed CounterStrikeSharp and current CS2 builds.
- Install any dependency named by the plugin author.
- Restart after the upload and inspect the server log for the plugin’s load error.
The server fails after an update
Game updates can change the interfaces used by Metamod, CounterStrikeSharp or individual plugins. Stop the server, restore the last known-good framework and plugin files from backup, and then check for releases that explicitly support the new CS2 build. Keep the framework and plugins on compatible versions rather than updating one component blindly.
The plugin appears in the list but its feature does not work
A listed plugin has passed the framework’s loading stage, but it may still need a configuration file, a map change or another dependency. Read that plugin’s release documentation, check its generated configuration, and review the server log for permission or dependency errors. Do not assume that reinstalling Metamod will fix a feature-level configuration problem.

Steam’s dedicated-server guidance treats server reachability and administration as a separate task from plugin installation. A server account and standard controls can include:
- Network type
- Player limit
- UDP port
- RCON password
- VAC settings
These settings determine how players connect and how administrators control the server; they do not install Metamod, CounterStrikeSharp or plugins. Configure and test them independently so a networking problem is not mistaken for a plugin-loading failure.
First-start verification checklist
- The server is stopped before framework files or
gameinfo.giare changed. - Metamod files exist in
game/csgo/addons/metamod. gameinfo.gicontainsGame csgo/addons/metamoddirectly beneathGame_LowViolence csgo_lv.- The server has been restarted after the SearchPaths edit.
meta listshows Metamod.- CounterStrikeSharp was installed from the with-runtime package for the first setup.
addons/counterstrikesharpis directly undergame/csgo/.meta listshows CounterStrikeSharp.- Each plugin is under
game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/pluginswith its original folder structure. - The server was restarted after each plugin upload.
css_plugins listshows the expected active plugins.- The plugin, framework and CS2 versions are documented as compatible.
Ongoing maintenance rules
- Keep a dated backup before every framework or plugin update.
- Record the CS2 build, CounterStrikeSharp release and plugin versions that work together.
- Read release notes after a game update before restarting a production server with old plugins.
- Use the server console and logs as the first source of evidence when a command or plugin disappears.
- On a managed host, verify that the panel still supports the framework versions you need; panel labels and supported versions can change.
Once Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp are verified, plugin installation is repeatable: place a compatible release in the correct plugins directory, restart, and confirm it with css_plugins list. The part that requires the most care is not the file copy itself, but keeping the game build, framework, runtime and every plugin release compatible over time.
