You can run pfSense on a VPS when the virtual machine provides an amd64 CPU, persistent storage, a provider console, an Internet path for the installer, an attachable AMD64 ISO, and two usable virtual network interfaces. The installation itself is the normal ISO-based pfSense process: boot the verified image, install to the virtual disk, detach the image, assign WAN and LAN, then finish in the web configurator.

The difficult part is not clicking through the installer. It is choosing a VPS whose virtual networking, firmware controls and recovery console match a firewall’s needs. The procedure below covers the design, exact install sequence, VirtIO failures, verification and the limits of using a cloud VM at the network perimeter.

pfSense software runs in both bare-metal and hosted virtualization environments. A VPS is suitable only when you can control the virtual machine closely enough to create a two-sided firewall: one interface faces the upstream network (WAN), and another reaches a private network (LAN). A single public interface can install pfSense, but it does not provide the normal routed-firewall topology unless the provider supplies another private path or an equivalent network design.
Minimum resources and practical headroom

The 1 GB and 8 GB figures are documented minimums, not a performance recommendation. A firewall that terminates tunnels, performs extensive logging or carries many connections needs additional CPU, RAM and disk I/O. Size from the traffic and packages you actually expect rather than treating the minimum as a target.

Choose a VPS by capabilities, not by brand
Before ordering, ask the provider to confirm each item below in its current documentation. A low-cost VM that lacks one of these controls can be impossible to recover after a routine firewall change.
- Custom ISO mounting: You need to upload or select the official AMD64 installer and attach it to the VM.
- Serial or graphical console: The console must remain usable even when WAN rules or routing are wrong.
- Two virtual NICs: Confirm that a second adapter can be attached to a private network, VLAN or other isolated segment, and determine whether interface names or MAC addresses stay stable after a reboot.
- Addressing options: Establish whether WAN uses DHCP, a manually assigned static address, PPPoE, a floating address or another model. Ask how gateways are supplied.
- Anti-spoofing policy: Some clouds permit only the assigned source MAC or IP. A firewall that forwards traffic may require a provider setting, routed subnet or explicit approval.
- Persistent disks and recovery: Check snapshot, backup and disk-replacement behavior, including whether a snapshot can be restored while the VM is powered off.
- Predictable resources: Review the provider’s CPU scheduling, bandwidth limits and maintenance process. A perimeter firewall is sensitive to unexplained packet loss and address changes.
Score candidate plans on those capabilities rather than on a plan name. A provider can advertise a second NIC yet still block private-side traffic, MAC changes or routed subnets; those details determine whether the design works.
Design the WAN and LAN before you install
Write down the intended path before opening the console. The WAN adapter connects to the VPS provider’s upstream network and receives the address or lease that the provider specifies. The LAN adapter connects to a private network, an isolated virtual switch or a second VPS that will act as a test host. Clients on that side use pfSense as their gateway.
Record the information you need
- Which virtual NIC is connected to upstream and which is connected to the private segment.
- The WAN method: DHCP, static addressing or PPPoE. For static addressing, record the address, prefix length, gateway and DNS details supplied by the provider.
- The private subnet and the address you want pfSense to use on LAN.
- Whether the provider routes the LAN subnet to the VM or expects source NAT from the WAN address.
- Whether a security group, floating-IP attachment or anti-spoofing switch must be changed for forwarded traffic.
Do not rely on adapter order alone. Virtual NIC names can change when an interface is detached or recreated. Use the console’s displayed MAC addresses and the provider’s attachment list to identify each port.
Download and verify the installer
Obtain the AMD64 ISO from the official pfSense distribution channel. This image is intended for a physical or virtual optical drive and is the appropriate media for an amd64 VPS. Download the accompanying SHA-256 checksum and verify the file locally before mounting it.
- Save the ISO and its checksum file in a directory you control.
- Run a SHA-256 tool such as
sha256sum pfSense-*.iso(Linux) or an equivalent checksum utility on your operating system. - Compare the calculated digest character-for-character with the published value. A mismatch means you should delete the image and download it again; do not boot an unverified image.
- Keep the verified ISO available to the provider’s image uploader or remote-console media tool.
The pfSense installer is an online installer. During setup it downloads installation data from Netgate servers, so the VM needs working Internet connectivity through the installation path. A management network that reaches the provider console but cannot reach the Internet can still fail partway through installation.

Provision the VPS and set boot firmware
- Create an amd64 VM with a persistent disk. Start with at least 1 GB RAM and 8 GB storage; allocate additional capacity for your workload.
- Attach two virtual network adapters before the first boot. Connect one to the provider’s upstream/WAN network and the other to the private LAN network.
- Attach the verified AMD64 ISO as the virtual CD/DVD device.
- Set the virtual optical drive first in the boot order, or use the provider’s one-time boot menu.
- Open the serial or graphical console and keep it available for the entire installation.
UEFI, BIOS and disk-layout compatibility
Firmware settings must match the way the installer lays out the disk. A documented Proxmox configuration uses the q35 machine type, OVMF (UEFI), an EFI disk, a serial port and disabled secure boot for a UEFI guest. Other providers expose different labels, so select the equivalent UEFI settings where available.
Some BIOS implementations do not boot GPT or ZFS layouts correctly. If the VM installs successfully but will not start from its virtual disk, review whether it is using BIOS or UEFI, whether an EFI disk is present when required, and whether secure boot is disabled. Switching firmware after installation can require reinstalling or repairing the boot layout, so decide the mode before you begin.
Install pfSense from the ISO
- Power on the VM and select the mounted ISO from the boot menu if it is not selected automatically.
- At the pfSense welcome screen, accept the license terms.
- Choose the install option and select the persistent virtual disk as the target. Double-check the disk identity; selecting the wrong device erases its contents.
- Accept the installer’s suggested partition and filesystem layout unless your documented VM design requires another choice.
- Allow the installer to copy files and download required components. If it reports an Internet or repository error, stop and fix the WAN path rather than repeatedly retrying.
- When prompted, reboot the VM.
- Before it boots again, detach the ISO or remove the virtual optical drive from the boot order. Otherwise the VM will return to the installer instead of using the new disk.
Leave the console open during the first disk boot. It shows whether the virtual disk is detected, whether the firmware finds the boot loader and which interface names pfSense assigns.
Assign WAN and LAN at first boot
After the first boot, pfSense offers console configuration. Skip VLAN creation unless your design specifically requires tagged VLANs; adding an unnecessary VLAN layer makes recovery harder on a VPS.

- Identify the adapter connected to the provider’s upstream network. Match its displayed MAC address with the provider panel and assign it as WAN.
- Assign the adapter connected to the private segment as LAN.
- Confirm the mapping and apply it. The console then displays the assigned interface names and addresses.
- If the WAN method is DHCP, wait for a lease. If it is static or PPPoE, use the web configurator to enter the exact values supplied by the provider.
Do not guess based on names such as vtnet0 or vtnet1. The first virtual adapter is not guaranteed to be WAN after hardware changes. If you reverse the ports, the firewall may appear reachable from the console while routing and management behave unexpectedly.
Finish configuration in the web configurator
From a host on the permitted LAN or private segment, open the LAN address shown on the pfSense console. Complete the setup wizard and provide the WAN addressing method that the VPS provider gave you. For a static WAN, enter the address, prefix, gateway and DNS values exactly; for DHCP, let the lease populate those fields; for PPPoE, enter the supplied credentials.

Secure management before exposure
- Change the default administrator credentials immediately.
- Restrict web configurator access to the LAN or a dedicated management network. Do not expose it broadly on WAN while testing.
- Use HTTPS and a strong, unique password. Add multi-factor protection if your chosen pfSense release and access design support it.
- Document the LAN address, console credentials and provider console path in a secure location.
Only after management works from the private side should you create any deliberate WAN management rule. A temporary “allow any” rule is difficult to reason about and can leave the firewall exposed after the test.
Fix VirtIO network problems
pfSense includes VirtIO drivers and normally presents VirtIO adapters as vtnet interfaces. The official guidance warns that FreeBSD’s current VirtIO behavior can require hardware checksum offloading to be disabled.
- In the web configurator, open System > Advanced and select the Networking tab.
- Disable hardware checksum offloading. If your design or release exposes related hardware segmentation or receive-offload controls and traffic remains faulty, test those settings as well, changing one item at a time.
- Save the change and reboot pfSense. A manual offload change is not complete until the reboot.
- If traffic between guests or between the guest and host still fails, inspect equivalent offload settings on the hypervisor or virtual switch.
Typical symptoms include a working console but broken web pages, failed pings between virtual machines, or connections that establish and then stall. First verify that WAN and LAN are still assigned to the intended MAC addresses; then apply the offload change and retest from both sides.
Validate the installation before carrying traffic
Check the pfSense console
- Confirm the expected WAN and LAN interface names are present.
- Confirm WAN has the address or lease supplied by the provider and LAN has the planned private address.
- Check that the default gateway is the provider’s gateway, not a private-side address.
Test from pfSense itself
Use the built-in diagnostics tools to resolve a known DNS name and test outbound reachability over WAN. A successful console login alone does not prove that the installer or firewall can reach the Internet.
Test from a private-side host
From a permitted LAN or private test VM, open the web configurator, resolve DNS and make an outbound connection. Confirm that the client uses pfSense as its gateway and that the expected NAT or routed behavior occurs. Test an intentionally blocked destination or port as well, so you know filtering is actually in the path.
Check provider controls
- Review security-group rules for both directions.
- Confirm the floating or public IP is attached to the intended WAN adapter.
- Verify MAC-address and anti-spoofing settings permit the source addresses your design will emit.
- Confirm the provider’s private network actually carries traffic to the LAN test host.
Take a provider snapshot or export a pfSense configuration backup only after these tests pass and the initial settings are stable. Label the backup with the pfSense version, WAN method and interface mapping.

Troubleshooting branches
The VM keeps booting the installer
Detach the ISO and remove the virtual CD/DVD from the first boot position. If the disk is still not found, check that the VM is using the same BIOS or UEFI mode selected during installation and that the persistent disk is attached to the expected controller.
WAN has no address
Recheck the provider’s required addressing method, gateway and VLAN or network attachment. Verify that the public or floating IP is bound to the correct virtual NIC. If the provider uses static addressing, DHCP will not produce a lease; if it uses DHCP, a manually entered gateway can be wrong.
The web configurator is unreachable
Use the console to confirm the LAN address and interface assignment. Test from a host on the private segment, not from the public Internet, and check that the host’s default gateway points to pfSense. If the interface is a VirtIO adapter, apply the checksum-offload procedure and reboot.

Traffic leaves pfSense but replies never return
Inspect provider anti-spoofing, security-group and routing rules. A cloud network may drop packets whose source address is not the assigned WAN address or an approved routed subnet. Correct the provider-side policy or use the provider’s documented NAT/routing model.
The disk boots on one firmware mode but not the other
Return to the firmware mode used for installation. For a UEFI design, verify the EFI disk and secure-boot settings; for legacy BIOS, verify that the selected disk layout is bootable by that firmware. Do not repeatedly switch modes without a backup because the guest can become unbootable.
Capacity and performance decisions
Use the documented 1 GB RAM and 8 GB storage only for a small, basic firewall. Additional packages, large state tables, detailed logs and VPN encryption consume resources independently of raw bandwidth. Allocate disk for retained logs and backups, and monitor memory pressure, CPU saturation and interface errors after placing the VM in service.
Two virtual NICs do not guarantee two independent physical paths. They may share the same host, uplink or failure domain. Ask how the provider handles host maintenance, network incidents and IP failover, and record the recovery time you should expect.
When a VPS firewall is appropriate
Virtualized pfSense is supported, but perimeter deployments often use standalone hardware to reduce the attack surface and avoid putting the firewall and the workloads it protects on one virtualization platform. A VPS is a reasonable choice when you need a remotely hosted gateway, the provider offers reliable console recovery, virtual networking is predictable, address assignment is documented and a private LAN can be attached without workarounds.
It is a poor fit when the provider cannot guarantee console access, changes virtual NIC behavior without notice, blocks the required source addresses, offers only an ephemeral disk or provides no tested failover path. Document how to rebuild the VM, restore the pfSense configuration and reattach addresses before routing critical traffic through it.
Pre-production checklist
- amd64 VM, persistent disk and resource allocation recorded.
- Verified AMD64 ISO mounted and later detached.
- WAN and LAN adapters identified by MAC address.
- Firmware mode, EFI settings and secure-boot choice documented.
- WAN addressing, gateway and private subnet recorded.
- Provider security-group, floating-IP and anti-spoofing rules tested.
- Default credentials changed and management restricted to the private side.
- DNS, outbound routing, NAT and an intentionally blocked flow tested.
- VirtIO checksum offload disabled and rebooted if required.
- Provider snapshot and pfSense configuration backup stored after stabilization.
- Console recovery and rebuild steps written down for another administrator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can pfSense run on any cloud VPS?
No. The VM needs an amd64 architecture, persistent storage, attachable ISO media, console recovery and a workable two-interface network design. Provider anti-spoofing and private-network rules must also allow the traffic you intend to route.
Can I install pfSense with only one virtual NIC?
You can complete an installation with one interface, but a conventional WAN/LAN firewall requires a second private-side interface or an equivalent provider network. Without it, there is no separate LAN path to protect.

pfSense supports VirtIO, but hardware checksum offloading may need to be disabled under System > Advanced > Networking, followed by a reboot. Also check equivalent offload settings on the hypervisor and verify the interface mapping.
What should I do if the VPS will not boot after installation?
Detach the ISO, confirm the VM boots from its persistent disk, and match the firmware to the installation mode. For UEFI, check the EFI disk and disabled secure boot; some BIOS implementations cannot boot GPT or ZFS layouts.
