How to Install Oxide (uMod) on a Rust Server

A complete, practical guide to installing Oxide (uMod) on self-hosted or managed Rust servers, with exact archive names, file paths, verification steps and troubleshooting for version mismatches.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To install Oxide (uMod) on a Rust server, stop the server, download the latest non-pre-release Oxide build for your operating system, extract it to a temporary folder, copy its files into the Rust server’s RustDedicated_Data directory, and start the server with your normal launch script. Join the server, open the F1 console, and run oxide.version to confirm that the framework loaded.

The most important maintenance rule is version matching: update Oxide whenever Facepunch updates the Rust server, and do not let your normal start script run SteamCMD on every launch.

What Oxide (uMod) does on a Rust server

Oxide is the server-side modding framework commonly referred to as uMod. It loads server plugins, exposes commands and permissions, and provides the runtime that lets those plugins change gameplay or administration without modifying the Rust client.

It is installed on the server machine, not on each player’s computer. Players normally connect with the standard Rust client after the server has loaded Oxide. A server can run without plugins after installation; the framework itself must load successfully before plugin files can do anything.

Choose the installation method

Route What you control Best fit Main trade-off
Self-hosted files Server files, Oxide version, Rust updates, SteamCMD branch and launch scripts Owners with FTP, file-manager or local-machine access You must stop the server, copy files correctly and keep versions synchronized
Managed control panel Usually a mod toggle or one-click installer Owners who do not want to manage server files Install and update timing depends on the host, and file-level control is limited

Both routes install the same framework. Use the self-hosted procedure below when you can browse the server directory. If your provider supplies a uMod or Oxide installer, use the managed-host procedure instead of manually uploading files unless the provider specifically asks you to do so.

Prerequisites and a safe pre-install checklist

  • A working Rust dedicated server that has completed its initial setup.
  • File access through FTP, an SFTP or file-management panel, or direct access to the machine running the server.
  • A way to stop and start the server cleanly.
  • The correct Oxide archive for the server’s operating system.
  • A current backup of the server configuration and any existing plugins.

Stop the server before changing files. Installing while Rust is running can leave files locked or produce a partially loaded installation. Wait until the control panel or console confirms that the process has exited; do not merely close the game window or disconnect from a remote console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Self-hosted installation, step by step

1. Stop Rust completely

  1. Use the host panel’s Stop action, or stop the dedicated-server process on your own machine.
  2. Wait for the process to finish and for the panel to show the server as offline.
  3. Do not start the server again until all Oxide files have been copied.

2. Identify the Rust server directory

Find the directory that contains the Rust dedicated-server executable: RustDedicated.exe on Windows or RustDedicated on Linux. This is the server’s main directory. Inside it should be a folder named RustDedicated_Data.

Current official installation instructions place Oxide’s extracted files in RustDedicated_Data. Some older third-party instructions describe copying to the server root instead. Follow the current official Oxide instructions and confirm the destination if the documentation changes; do not guess based on a similarly named folder.

3. Download the correct release

  1. Open the Oxide project releases page.
  2. Select the newest release that is not marked Pre-release.
  3. For a Windows server, download Oxide.Rust.zip.
  4. For a Linux server, download Oxide.Rust-linux.zip.

Do not use a build for a different operating system, and do not choose a testing release simply because it is newer. The release must also correspond to the Rust server version currently installed.

4. Extract to a temporary folder

Download the archive to your computer and extract it somewhere temporary, such as a new folder on your desktop. Extracting first lets you inspect the contents and prevents an archive program from creating an unwanted nested directory inside the live server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not upload the zip file itself. Do not copy an outer folder that merely contains the real files. Open the extracted folder and identify the files and directories supplied by the Oxide release.

5. Copy the extracted files into RustDedicated_Data

  1. Open the Rust server directory identified in step 2.
  2. Open RustDedicated_Data.
  3. Copy the extracted Oxide files into that directory.
  4. Choose Overwrite or Replace when the file manager asks about existing files.

Copy the contents of the extracted release, not an additional parent folder. A common mistake is ending up with a path such as RustDedicated_Data/Oxide.Rust/RustDedicated_Data; Oxide will not load from that extra level.

6. Start with the normal server script

Start Rust with the same launch script or control-panel action you used before the installation. The start command should launch the server; it should not download or reinstall Rust on every boot. If the script invokes SteamCMD each time, separate the update operation from the normal start operation before troubleshooting Oxide.

Verify that Oxide loaded

Check the startup console

Watch the server console from the beginning of the boot. A successful installation produces Oxide-related startup messages before the server becomes ready. The exact wording varies by release and host, so use the presence of Oxide initialization messages rather than looking for one fixed line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the in-game version command

  1. Connect to the server with a client that has permission to use the console.
  2. Press F1 to open Rust’s in-game console.
  3. Enter oxide.version and submit it.

The command should print the installed Oxide version. If it returns an unknown-command error or produces no Oxide response, treat the framework as unloaded and work through the troubleshooting section rather than attempting to install plugins.

Confirm the server remains stable

Join, move around, and watch the server console for errors for several minutes. A version response proves that Oxide loaded; it does not prove that every plugin or configuration is compatible. Add plugins only after the base installation starts cleanly.

Installing a first plugin

Plugin installation is separate from framework installation. In the usual uMod Rust layout, plugin source files use the .cs extension and are placed in the server’s oxide/plugins directory. Host documentation describes this convention, but folder layouts can change between frameworks and providers, so confirm the current official plugin-install instructions before uploading a plugin.

  1. Stop the server before making a large plugin change or before replacing an existing plugin.
  2. Upload the plugin’s .cs file to oxide/plugins, without renaming it or placing it inside a second nested folder.
  3. Start the server and watch the console for the plugin load message or a compile error.
  4. Use the plugin’s documented command or permission setup only after the console reports that it loaded.

A plugin compile error is not evidence that Oxide itself failed. First check the plugin’s supported Rust and Oxide versions, then read the first error in the console; later errors are often consequences of that initial failure.

Keeping Oxide and Rust versions matched

Facepunch updates can change the server binaries and APIs that plugins depend on. The official Oxide guidance treats each Rust server update as requiring a corresponding Oxide update. Running an older Oxide build against a newly updated Rust server can prevent startup, leave every plugin failing, or produce a server that appears online but has no working commands.

A safe update sequence

  1. Stop the Rust server and back up your configuration, world data and oxide folder.
  2. Update Rust through your normal SteamCMD or host-panel update process.
  3. Obtain the Oxide release that supports the updated Rust build. Choose the latest stable, non-pre-release archive for Windows or Linux.
  4. Replace the existing Oxide files in RustDedicated_Data, allowing overwrites.
  5. Start the server and verify with oxide.version.
  6. Check the console for plugin compile errors before announcing the server as ready.

SteamCMD branch and launch-script pitfalls

The installation guidance recommends the public beta branch for SteamCMD updates and warns against relying on the release branch when it is not synchronized with the public Rust build. Follow your provider’s current branch instructions, but do not silently switch branches during troubleshooting: record which branch supplied the server files.

Keep SteamCMD updates out of the ordinary start script. If the script updates Rust every time the server launches, it can replace files after you install Oxide and make the server revert to an apparently vanilla state. Run updates deliberately, then start the already-updated server with a separate command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting common failures

oxide.version is not recognized

  • Confirm that you pressed F1 in the connected Rust client and entered the command exactly as oxide.version, with a period and no slash.
  • Check that the files are in RustDedicated_Data, not only in the server root and not in a nested extraction folder.
  • Verify that the archive matches the operating system: Oxide.Rust.zip for Windows or Oxide.Rust-linux.zip for Linux.
  • Review the startup console for Oxide initialization messages.
  • Make sure the server was fully stopped while files were copied, then restart it.

The server starts as vanilla after installation

Inspect the launch script first. If it runs SteamCMD and updates the installation on every boot, it may have overwritten the Oxide files. Remove the automatic update step from the normal start path, perform the update separately, reinstall the matching Oxide build, and verify again.

The server refuses to start after a Rust update

Assume a version mismatch until proven otherwise. Stop the server, identify the current Rust build, and install the Oxide release intended for that build. Do not keep trying older plugins against a framework that has not been updated. If the host has not yet published a compatible Oxide build, the practical choices are to wait, run the host’s supported version, or temporarily operate without Oxide.

The server starts but every plugin fails

Check oxide.version first. If Oxide reports correctly, inspect the first plugin error in the startup console and compare that plugin’s compatibility requirements. A Rust update can invalidate multiple plugins at once; updating the framework alone does not guarantee that third-party plugin code has been updated.

Files appear to copy successfully but Oxide still does not load

  • Open the archive again and ensure you copied its contents rather than the zip or an outer folder.
  • Check for a duplicated path such as RustDedicated_Data/RustDedicated_Data.
  • Confirm that the panel is pointing to the same server instance whose console you are watching; hosts sometimes expose separate staging and production directories.
  • Re-download the stable archive if the local download was incomplete.
  • Restart after the copy; a running process will not necessarily load newly replaced binaries.

Using a managed Rust host

Many managed providers expose uMod or Oxide in a control-panel mod manager. The exact labels differ, but the reliable sequence is consistent:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server from the control panel.
  2. Open the panel’s Mod Manager, Mods or equivalent section.
  3. Choose uMod or Oxide and click Install.
  4. Wait for the panel to report completion; do not start the server midway through the operation.
  5. Start the server again.
  6. Join, press F1 and run oxide.version.

A managed installer reduces file-placement mistakes and may handle framework updates automatically, but it cannot guarantee that a newly released Oxide build is available immediately after a Rust update. If the control panel reports a successful install while the command is missing, open a support ticket with the server’s Rust build number and startup log rather than repeatedly clicking Install.

Operational checklist after installation

  • Keep a backup of the oxide configuration and plugin directories before Rust or Oxide updates.
  • Record the Rust build, Oxide version and SteamCMD branch used for each update.
  • Install one plugin at a time so a compile failure has an obvious cause.
  • Read the startup console after every update, even when the server appears online.
  • Test administrative commands with a non-owner account when practical, so permissions are not accidentally broader than intended.
  • Remove obsolete plugin files instead of leaving multiple versions with similar names in the plugins directory.

Bottom line

For a self-hosted Rust server, the dependable path is: stop the server, use the latest stable OS-specific Oxide archive, extract it separately, copy its contents into RustDedicated_Data, start without an automatic SteamCMD update, and verify with oxide.version. Keep Oxide synchronized with every Rust server update. A managed host can automate the file work, but you should still perform the same in-game verification and version checks.
