How to install optional updates in Windows 11

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 doesn’t just push regular monthly quality updates. It also offers optional updates—including preview quality fixes, drivers, and sometimes other non-mandatory components—so you can install improvements when you want them.

This guide shows the exact ways to install optional updates in Windows 11, what to check first, and what to do when installs fail. You’ll also see how optional updates differ from mandatory cumulative updates.

What optional updates are in Windows 11 (and what they’re not)

Optional updates are updates Microsoft makes available for download and installation, but they’re not automatically installed by Windows Update. Depending on your device and Windows 11 build, optional items may include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Optional driver updates (for hardware like chipsets, Wi‑Fi adapters, Bluetooth, storage controllers)
  • Non-security or preview quality updates (often labeled as optional)
  • Other Microsoft component updates that may support stability or features

They’re still “official” updates from Microsoft, but they’re not required to keep your system secure. That said, some optional updates can fix real-world issues, so installing them can be worth it—especially after a specific bug affects you.

Before you install: prerequisites and safety checks

Optional updates tend to be low risk, but drivers and preview-style items can affect system behavior. Do these checks first.

1) Confirm you’re on Windows 11 and check your version

Go to Settings → System → About. Note your Version and OS build (for example, 23H2 with build 22631.x). Optional update listings can vary by build.

2) Connect to power and use a stable network

Use AC power on laptops. If you’re on metered Wi‑Fi, consider switching to an unmetered connection to avoid stalled downloads.

3) Create a restore point (recommended before drivers)

If you’re installing driver-related optional updates, a restore point makes rollback easier.

  1. Press Win + R, type SystemPropertiesProtection, press Enter.
  2. Under Protection Settings, select your system drive (usually System) and click Configure.
  3. Choose Turn on system protection, apply, then go back and click Create.
  4. Name it something like Before optional driver updates and confirm.

Method 1: Install optional updates from Windows Update (Settings)

This is the most common path. You’ll use Windows Update to find and install optional items that match your system.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates. Wait until the page finishes searching.
  4. If optional items are available, click Advanced options.
  5. Select Optional updates (wording may appear as a separate link depending on your build).
  6. Review the list, check the boxes for what you want, and click Download and install.
  7. Follow the prompts. Some updates require a restart—do it when Windows asks.

Method 2: Install optional updates from the Optional updates page

On many Windows 11 builds, the Optional updates page provides a clear breakdown of categories (often drivers and other optional updates). Use this when you want to be selective.

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update.
  2. Open Advanced options.
  3. Go to Optional updates.
  4. Sort by category if the UI offers it (for example, Drivers vs Other optional updates).
  5. For each category, select the items you want. If you see driver updates, consider installing the ones relevant to your hardware.
  6. Click Download and install.

Choosing what to install: If you’re troubleshooting a specific issue (e.g., Wi‑Fi drops), prioritize the relevant driver first. If a device is stable, you can skip other optional items unless they address your problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 3: Install optional driver updates (recommended workflow)

Drivers are where “optional” can feel most impactful. Installing the right driver can resolve bugs, but a mismatched driver can cause instability. Here’s a safe workflow.

Step-by-step

  1. Check for updates: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
  2. Open Advanced options → Optional updates.
  3. Under Driver updates (or similarly named section), identify the device type (example labels you might see: Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Chipset, Display).
  4. Select only the driver(s) you need.
  5. Click Download and install.
  6. Reboot when prompted.

After reboot: verify stability

Test the affected device for a few minutes or longer depending on your issue. If the problem worsens, roll back using System Restore (if you created a restore point) or Device Manager.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  • Open Device Manager (press Win, type Device Manager).
  • Right-click the device → Properties → Driver.
  • Use Roll Back Driver if available, otherwise reinstall the previous driver.

Method 4: Install optional updates from Microsoft Update Catalog

If Windows Update doesn’t show optional items, you can manually install specific update packages using the Microsoft Update Catalog. This is also useful for controlled rollouts and exact version matching.

You’ll need the KB number for the update you want (example format: KB503XXXX).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step

  1. Open Microsoft Update Catalog in your browser (search for Microsoft Update Catalog).
  2. Search for the KB number (example: KB5031234).
  3. From the results, pick the package that matches your architecture (commonly x64) and Windows 11 build requirements if shown.
  4. Click Download and save the file.
  5. Run the installer. Some packages may be .msu files; Windows can install them with a double-click.
  6. Restart if the installer requests it.

Gotchas to watch

  • Architecture mismatch: Don’t install x86 packages on an x64 system.
  • Wrong OS build: Optional items often target specific builds. If you’re unsure, confirm your current build in Settings → System → About.
  • Driver-specific updates: Some drivers are better installed through the Windows Update driver flow or the OEM’s driver package, depending on the device.

Method 5: Install optional updates via IT tools (WSUS/ConfigMgr)

If you manage multiple machines, you may prefer not to rely on each PC’s Windows Update UI. In enterprises, optional updates can still be distributed through standard update-management systems.

With WSUS

  1. In your WSUS console, ensure the Windows 11 products and classifications are configured correctly.
  2. Import/approve the specific optional update(s) you want (typically those labeled optional/preview depending on Microsoft’s classification).
  3. Deploy to the target computer group(s).
  4. On endpoints, use policy/agent settings so they sync with WSUS.

With Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr)

  1. In ConfigMgr, synchronize software updates from your update source.
  2. Identify the optional updates by KB ID and approve them in your update deployment workflow.
  3. Create a deployment collection that matches your Windows 11 devices.
  4. Deploy and monitor installation status. Plan a maintenance window if the deployment triggers reboots.

What to expect after installation

Optional updates typically follow the same installation model as other Windows updates: download, install, and often a reboot. Windows may also create update logs and show installed items in history.

Check what installed

  1. Go to Settings → Windows Update.
  2. Click Update history.
  3. Locate the optional update entry and confirm the KB number.

How long it takes

Time varies with update size, device storage speed, and whether Windows needs to download additional dependencies. Plan for at least one restart window when installing driver-related optional updates.

Troubleshooting when optional updates won’t install

If optional updates fail, Windows usually provides an error code or a short failure reason. Use that code to pick the fastest fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1) Re-run Windows Update detection

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. Try installing again from Optional updates.

2) Use the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and click Run.
  3. Apply recommended fixes and try the optional update again.

3) Clear and rebuild update cache (advanced but common fix)

If installs repeatedly fail, resetting the update components can help. This is especially useful for stuck downloads or repeated errors.

  1. Press Win + X → select Terminal (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin).
  2. Run these commands (exactly):

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc

Then rename the cache folders:

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

Now restart services:

net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc

Finally, go back to Settings → Windows Update and click Check for updates.

4) If a driver optional update fails, use the device-specific route

When an optional driver package won’t install, try one of these approaches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Device Manager reinstall: Uninstall the device driver (choose the option to delete driver software if offered), reboot, and let Windows re-detect.
  • OEM driver fallback: Many device vendors (laptops, Wi‑Fi modules) provide tested drivers for specific models.
  • System Restore: If you created a restore point, revert before the driver install and try a different driver option.

5) Error codes: what to collect

Write down the KB number and any error code shown in Windows Update failure details. If you’re using the Microsoft Update Catalog, also save the exact KB you installed so you can remove it if needed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Installing multiple driver updates at once: If something breaks, it becomes hard to pinpoint the culprit.
  • Skipping reboots: Windows may schedule parts of the update for startup. Always reboot when prompted.
  • Using metered or unstable connections: Optional updates can fail mid-download; stable connectivity prevents partial installs.
  • Forgetting to match architecture/build: With Microsoft Update Catalog, pick the right x64 package for your Windows 11 build.

Optional updates vs. cumulative updates vs. feature upgrades

Windows Update has different update categories. Knowing the difference helps you decide what’s safe to install and when to wait.

Update type Typical goal Installed automatically? Who should prioritize
Cumulative updates Security and fixes for reliability Yes (generally) Most users and organizations
Optional updates Drivers, preview quality, non-mandatory fixes No Users affected by specific issues
Feature upgrades (e.g., 22H2 → 23H2) New capabilities and UI changes No; requires upgrade path Users ready for bigger changes

FAQs

Do optional updates include security fixes?

Sometimes, yes—depending on what Microsoft labels for your device and build. However, optional updates are not the same as the regular monthly security baseline, so don’t assume optional equals “safer” or “more secure.”

Why don’t I see optional updates in Windows Update?

It can mean there are no optional items available for your current Windows 11 build, or your device doesn’t match the update’s requirements. Try Check for updates, then verify your OS build in Settings → System → About.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can optional updates break Wi‑Fi or other drivers?

They can. Drivers are the most likely cause, especially preview-style or hardware-specific packages. If that happens, revert using System Restore (if available) or roll back the driver from Device Manager.

Should I install all optional updates?

No. A safer approach is to install only the optional items related to the problem you’re trying to fix—most users will benefit from selective installs, especially for driver updates.

How do I uninstall an optional update?

Go to Settings → Windows Update → Update history. Look for the update KB entry, then choose Uninstall if the option is available for that update type. For drivers, Device Manager rollback is often the cleaner path.

Bottom Line

To install optional updates in Windows 11, open Settings → Windows Update, then use Advanced options → Optional updates to select what you want and install. For specific KBs or when Windows Update doesn’t list items, use the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you’re installing optional drivers, create a restore point first and install selectively. That’s the simplest way to get the benefits of optional updates without making recovery harder.
