The repository procedure supports current, non-end-of-life CentOS 8, 9 and 10; Debian 11, 12 and 13; and Ubuntu 22, 24 and 26, plus listed derivatives such as AlmaLinux, CloudLinux, Oracle Linux, RockyLinux and VzLinux.

This guide shows the repository installation first, including WebAdmin access, firewall requirements, PHP installation, verification and upgrades. It then explains the one-click, precompiled-binary and source-build alternatives so you can choose the right balance of automation and control.

Check that your VPS is supported
Before changing the server, identify the distribution and release running on the VPS and compare it with the current OpenLiteSpeed support matrix. The versions listed in the installation documentation are current as of October 15, 2026; package availability can change, so check the matrix again when provisioning a new machine or planning a production upgrade.

You also need SSH access with an account that can use sudo. Keep a second session available while you make firewall changes. If the VPS image is outside the supported list, do not force a package installation: replace the image with a supported release or choose a different installation path after confirming that the binary or source instructions cover your operating system.

Choose an installation method
OpenLiteSpeed has several installation paths. They install the same web server but differ in how much software is added automatically and how upgrades are performed.

For most Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS-family VPSs, start with the repository method. Use the one-click script only on a fresh VPS where its bundled components are wanted. Choose a binary or source build when reproducibility or custom compilation matters more than package-manager convenience.
Install OpenLiteSpeed from the official repository
1. Connect over SSH
Connect to the VPS using an SSH account that has sudo privileges. Confirm the host and release before installing. If you are working on a production machine, take the provider’s snapshot or backup first so you can roll back a package or configuration change.
2. Add the LiteSpeed repository
Run the repository bootstrap command exactly as documented:
sudo wget -O - https://repo.litespeed.sh | sudo bashThe repository is the package source for OpenLiteSpeed and the LSPHP builds. The command pipes the downloaded bootstrap script to bash with root privileges, so run it only on the VPS you intend to administer and record when it was executed.
3. Install the OpenLiteSpeed package
Use the package manager that matches the operating-system family:

sudo yum install openlitespeed -yAt this point the server files are installed under the default OpenLiteSpeed tree, /usr/local/lsws. PHP is not installed by this step; add LSPHP separately if the site or application requires it.
4. Install LSPHP for PHP applications
The repository guide uses the 8.4 LSPHP packages. Install the core package, common extensions and the database driver appropriate to your distribution:

# CentOS-family distributions
sudo yum install lsphp84 lsphp84-common lsphp84-mysqlndThe LSPHP executable for this example is:
/usr/local/lsws/lsphp84/bin/lsphpRecord that path when configuring a PHP application or troubleshooting an external application definition. Installing OpenLiteSpeed alone does not provide a PHP interpreter, and installing an LSPHP package does not automatically migrate an existing application’s PHP settings.
Start the service and verify it
Use the bundled control utility to start OpenLiteSpeed and check its state:

sudo /usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl statusRun the status command after installation and again after a reboot or configuration change. A successful status response confirms that the control script can see the service; it does not by itself prove that an external firewall allows browser traffic or that a particular virtual host is configured.
If the service does not start, read the command output, confirm that the package installation completed, and check for a port or configuration conflict before repeating the start command. Do not install a second copy from another method to “fix” the first one; mixed installations make ownership of files and future upgrades ambiguous.

Open WebAdmin on port 7080
Find or set the administrator password
The installation generates a WebAdmin password and stores it at:
/usr/local/lsws/adminpasswdTo set or change the password interactively, run:
sudo /usr/local/lsws/admin/misc/admpass.shUse a strong, unique password and store it in your password manager. The password protects the administrative console, so do not place it in shell history, tickets or deployment scripts.
Allow the WebAdmin port
WebAdmin listens on TCP port 7080. Allow that port in both layers that can filter traffic:
- The VPS operating-system firewall, if one is enabled.
- The provider’s cloud firewall, security group or network ACL, if the VPS platform supplies one.
Open only the source addresses that need administrative access when your firewall supports source restrictions. You can close or restrict the port again after initial setup if your operating practice does not require public WebAdmin access.
Sign in
Open this address in a browser, replacing the host name or address with your own value:
https://your-domain-or-vps-ip:7080/Use the administrator credentials from adminpasswd or the password you set with admpass.sh. If the page does not load, check the VPS and cloud firewall rules first, then verify that OpenLiteSpeed is running with lswsctrl status. A DNS name is optional for this initial connection; the VPS IP works when the port is reachable.

What to configure after the first login
The installation and WebAdmin login establish the server, but a production site still needs its own listener, virtual-host, document-root, TLS and application settings. Apply those settings in a controlled order rather than changing several unrelated values at once.
- Confirm that the intended host name resolves to the VPS address.
- Decide which site directory will contain the application and ensure the account that runs deployments can write the files it needs.
- Create or select the virtual host and listener for the site in WebAdmin.
- If the application is PHP-based, configure its external application to use the installed LSPHP binary at
/usr/local/lsws/lsphp84/bin/lsphp. - Install the site’s certificate and redirect policy only after the plain HTTP path responds, so certificate and routing failures are easier to isolate.
- Make one change at a time, apply it, and use
lswsctrl statusto verify that the server remains running.
The exact virtual-host and TLS values depend on your application and domain; they are separate from the package installation itself. Keep a written record of every listener, host name and PHP binary selected so the configuration can be reproduced on a staging VPS.

Before running it, document the exact software and configuration the script will add, decide which credentials it will create, and take a backup or snapshot. Do not use it on a server that already has a separately managed database, PHP stack or web server unless you have verified that the script will not overwrite or conflict with them.
The command uses curl -k, as shown in the official procedure. Treat a remotely fetched installer as a privileged change: review the script and its release context, run it on the intended host, and retain a copy of the command and date for future maintenance.
Install from a precompiled binary
The binary guide provides an alternative for supported 64-bit operating systems when you want to install the supplied archive rather than use repository packages. It requires superuser privileges. The documented sequence is:

/usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl statusRun the extraction in a working directory with enough space, verify that the archive is the one you intended to install, and keep the original archive with your deployment records. The installer places the server under the default /usr/local/lsws tree. After installation, use the same WebAdmin password procedure and TCP 7080 firewall checks described earlier.
Do not later add the repository and update the binary installation with package-manager commands. The upgrade documentation explicitly warns against mixing binary and repository installations because the two methods can manage different files and versions.
Build OpenLiteSpeed from source
A source build is appropriate when you need custom compilation or want the build process itself under version control. It requires more operational work than a repository package.
- Extract the OpenLiteSpeed source archive in a dedicated build directory.
- Run
./build.sh. The script handles the dependency, configuration and compilation stages described by the source guide. - Review
ols.confand adjust the build or runtime settings required by your environment. - Run
./install.shwith the required privileges. - Start and check the server with
/usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl startand/usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl status.
The source installation uses /usr/local/lsws as the default server root and 7080 as the default WebAdmin port. Keep the source archive, build options, compiler environment and resulting version together in your deployment records. A source installation does not become a repository installation later; continue to rebuild and upgrade it through the source workflow you selected.
Upgrade without mixing installation methods
Use the same method for maintenance that you used to install OpenLiteSpeed. For repository installations, the documented package commands are:

# CentOS-family distributions
sudo yum update openlitespeedPackage availability and supported distribution releases are volatile. Test an upgrade on a staging VPS first, especially when the production server has custom listeners, virtual hosts or PHP integrations. Record the current version and back up configuration before applying the update. Afterward, run:
sudo /usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl statusThen verify WebAdmin access and an application request from a controlled client. Binary installations must be upgraded with the binary process, and source installations must be rebuilt through the source process; never alternate between those workflows and repository commands.

Pre-production checklist
- The VPS distribution and release appear in the current support list.
- You can connect over SSH with a sudo-capable account.
- The repository, binary or source method is recorded and will be reused for upgrades.
- OpenLiteSpeed starts and reports a healthy status through
/usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl status. - If PHP is required, the LSPHP packages are installed and the application uses
/usr/local/lsws/lsphp84/bin/lsphp. - The WebAdmin password is set securely, and TCP 7080 is allowed only where administration requires it.
- Any one-click bundle was run only on a fresh VPS after documenting its MariaDB, WordPress and LiteSpeed Cache additions.
- A staging upgrade or rollback plan exists before changing production.
