OBS lists Linux graphics requirements, and its documented launch options do not remove the need for a display server. Treat a no-desktop setup as experimental: verify the chosen Ubuntu and OBS versions, graphics stack, scene sources, and encoding workload before relying on it.
What this setup can—and cannot—promise
OBS Project documents an Ubuntu installation route through its OBS Studio PPA. Separately, OBS’s Linux guidance lists OpenGL 3.3 or later and recommends X server 1.18.4 or newer to avoid possible performance issues with some features. Installing the package on a minimal OCI server therefore does not, by itself, make OBS a supported headless service.

The official material covered here does not provide an OBS-specific supported recipe for running without a desktop or display server. A virtual display may be explored as a workaround, but it must be tested with the exact OBS build, Ubuntu image, graphics libraries, sources, and workload. No sustained-streaming or instance-performance results are established here.

Before choosing an OCI image, check the current OBS release and its compatibility with that Ubuntu release. OBS Project’s June 19, 2026 announcement says OBS Studio 33 will no longer support Ubuntu 24.04, Qt versions older than 6.4.2, and FFmpeg versions older than 6.1.1. It encourages Ubuntu 24.04 users seeking new major or minor OBS releases to move to Ubuntu 26.04 or later, or use Flatpak.

That announcement makes Ubuntu 24.04 a version risk for OBS 33-era releases; do not assume an older PPA package or an existing installation has the same compatibility. Confirm the current OBS instructions and repository state for the image you intend to use.
Create and access an OCI Ubuntu instance
Plan access and firewall changes
OCI network access can be controlled at several layers: the instance’s network security groups, subnet security lists, and the host firewall. Oracle says OCI platform images default to SSH-only access. Oracle’s Ubuntu image documentation also warns that using UFW incorrectly can prevent the instance from booting after a reboot; do not casually enable or change UFW without following Oracle’s prescribed procedure.
Oracle documents ubuntu as the automatically created user for OCI Ubuntu platform images. The user has sudo privileges, SSH v2 access is used, and root login is disabled. If the instance has no public IP, Canonical documents access through Oracle’s bastion feature, subject to private-networking and gateway prerequisites: Ubuntu on Oracle: use a bastion to access a VM.

Install OBS Studio from the Ubuntu PPA
OBS Project’s Ubuntu instructions use these commands. Run them in an SSH session as a sudo-capable user, such as ubuntu on an OCI Ubuntu platform image:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studioThese commands install the package; they do not configure a display server, verify OBS can launch headlessly, or configure a stream. Check release compatibility before installing, especially if the selected image is Ubuntu 24.04 and you want an OBS 33-era release.
Choose how you will operate OBS remotely

Use X11 forwarding only as a remote-GUI option
Oracle’s SSH documentation describes X11 forwarding as a way to display a remote graphical application on a local X11-compatible client. It does not specifically test OBS, Ubuntu OCI images, or a complete OBS workflow. Treat it as a way to investigate or operate a GUI remotely—not as proof that OBS supports headless operation. Use launch flags to automate a saved setup, not to remove graphics requirements
OBS documents launch parameters including --startstreaming, --startrecording, --collection, --profile, and --scene. They can select saved configuration and start an action, but OBS does not describe them as a headless mode. A configuration that starts successfully on one graphics stack or OCI shape may not behave the same on another.
Validate the full workload before depending on it
Package installation is only one part of a streaming setup. Test the exact production configuration with the selected OCI shape and OBS build before treating it as an unattended service.
- Confirm OBS launches with the display and graphics setup you intend to use; the OBS Linux guidance lists OpenGL 3.3 or later and recommends X server 1.18.4 or newer.
- Test every scene source. Camera, audio-device, capture, and other input behavior depends on what devices and sources are actually available to the instance.
- Verify the selected encoding path and sustained workload on the chosen OCI shape. The cited documentation does not establish hardware-encoding availability, performance, bitrate capacity, or uninterrupted streaming for a particular instance.
- Test stream start, stop, recovery, and restart behavior under the same conditions you expect to use in production; documented OBS launch flags alone do not establish unattended reliability.
- Use content you have the right to stream and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and material.
Troubleshoot by separating install, access, and runtime failures
The OBS package cannot be installed
Check that the PPA command completed, then run sudo apt update and review any repository or package errors before retrying sudo apt install obs-studio. Recheck whether the Ubuntu release is compatible with the OBS major version you are trying to install.

You cannot SSH into the instance
Check the OCI network security group and subnet security list as well as the host firewall. For a private instance, confirm the bastion and private-networking prerequisites rather than assuming it is reachable from the public internet.
SSH works, but a remote OBS window does not appear
SSH access alone does not provide a graphical display. X11 forwarding requires an X11-compatible local client, and the remote application still depends on a compatible graphics setup. Oracle’s generic SSH reference does not validate OBS on an OCI Ubuntu image.

OBS installs but will not launch or stream unattended
Do not treat a successful package install or launch flag as evidence of headless support. Recheck the Ubuntu/OBS compatibility, display-server and OpenGL requirements, saved scene configuration, available sources, and the selected instance’s ability to handle the workload. The official material cited here does not identify a supported OBS-specific headless configuration.

The server fails to reboot after a firewall change
Oracle warns that UFW changes on OCI Ubuntu images can prevent boot unless its prescribed workaround is followed. Avoid ad hoc firewall changes; review Oracle’s platform-image guidance and recovery options for the instance.
