To install a Steam Workshop mod on a Project Zomboid Build 42 dedicated server, add two different identifiers to the active server preset in Zomboid/Server: the numeric Workshop item ID in WorkshopItems=, and the package’s text Mod ID in Mods=. Restart the server after saving, then make sure every client uses the same compatible mods in the same order.

A Workshop item can download successfully yet remain inactive when its Mod ID is missing or misspelled. Conversely, putting a text Mod ID in WorkshopItems= produces an invalid Workshop-ID error. Build 42 syntax has changed between releases, so compare your generated preset with the format documented for the exact Build 42 version you are running.

What you need before editing the server
Plan the change as a server maintenance task, not as a live configuration tweak. Stop the dedicated server first, preserve the current save, and record the server name or preset that the startup command uses.
- Access to the machine or hosting panel that runs the dedicated server.
- The server’s
Zomboid/Serverdirectory and the active.inipreset. - The Steam Workshop URL for each mod you want to install.
- The text Mod ID for each package, obtained from its
mod.infofile or the Workshop description. - Enough free disk space for the Workshop downloads and extracted files.
- A backup of the Zomboid data directory and the active save.
- A plan to notify players about the restart and the required client-side mod set.
Check every Workshop page for Build 42 compatibility and multiplayer support. A mod that works in single-player, or on Build 41, is not automatically suitable for a Build 42 server.

WorkshopItems and Mods are different lists
Project Zomboid uses two identifiers because downloading content and enabling a package are separate operations.

These values are often different. The numeric value identifies a Workshop page; the text value identifies the mod package inside the downloaded item. A downloaded item that is absent from Mods= can sit on disk without being available in the game. A text value placed in WorkshopItems= is not a valid Workshop item ID.
Install Steam Workshop mods step by step
1. Stop the server and make a backup
Use the server’s normal stop control or service procedure and wait until the process has completely exited. Back up the entire Zomboid data directory and the active world/save before changing the preset. If the mod changes maps, world generation, loot, or other persistent data, the backup is your rollback point.
2. Find the preset the server actually starts
Open Zomboid/Server and identify the preset used by the startup configuration. The usual pattern is <servername>.ini; many installations begin with servertest.ini. Do not assume the first file you see is active. A different server name, world, container volume, or hosting-panel setting may point to another preset.
Write down the exact file name before editing it. If a restart produces no change, verifying this choice is the first check to make.
3. Copy each numeric Workshop ID into WorkshopItems
Open the Workshop page for a mod and copy its numeric id= value from the URL. Add that number to the active preset’s WorkshopItems= line. Separate multiple IDs with semicolons and preserve any entries already present.

WorkshopItems=123456789;987654321The numbers above illustrate the format only; use the IDs from the actual Workshop URLs. Do not paste a package name such as ModA into this line.
4. Find the package’s text Mod ID
Open the downloaded package’s mod.info file, or read the Workshop description when it states the identifier. The value is the package’s text Mod ID and may not resemble the numeric Workshop ID. A Workshop item can contain more than one package, so check all package IDs the author says must be enabled.
5. Add the text IDs to Mods
Put the package IDs on the Mods= line, preserving existing entries and separating each value with a semicolon. Build 42 examples use a leading backslash before every Mod ID:
Mods=ModA;ModBBuild 42 syntax has differed between releases and may be regenerated by the server. If the preset created by your exact version uses a different form, follow that generated syntax rather than copying an example from an older discussion. The important rule is that each package ID is in Mods=, not in WorkshopItems=.

Read the mod author’s dependency notes. Add required Workshop items and their corresponding Mod IDs, not only the feature mod you noticed. Keep the order required by the package author or by the preset generated for your Build 42 release. Clients must use the same compatible set and order.
7. Save, restart, and watch the startup output
Save the preset, close the editor, and start the server normally. On startup, the server should contact Steam, download or update the numeric Workshop items, and then enable the package IDs listed in Mods=. Keep the console or log output visible during this first restart. Look for successful Workshop downloads followed by mod-loading messages; an item downloading alone does not prove that the package loaded.

Join only after the server reaches its normal ready state. If the game reports a missing mod, disconnect rather than repeatedly retrying while the server is still downloading.
Make the client mod set match the server
Every player needs the same compatible mod set as the server, in the same order. A client with an extra package, a missing dependency, a different version, or a different order can fail the connection or desynchronize during play.
- Give players the exact Workshop collection or item list used by the server.
- Tell them which Build 42 release and multiplayer-compatible versions to use.
- Require a restart after a mod update so stale files are not used.
- When a player has an old or partially downloaded package, have them verify or remove that local package according to the game’s normal Workshop workflow, then download the required version again.
Do not enable a mod on the server merely because it appears in a client’s Workshop library. It must be present in both server lists, and its version must support the server’s Build 42 branch and multiplayer.
When a mod downloads but does not load
Check the two identifiers first
Confirm that every item in WorkshopItems= is a numeric Workshop ID copied from a URL. Then confirm that every package the server must load has its text Mod ID in Mods=, including any required dependency packages. Check spelling, capitalization, separators, and the Build 42 leading-backslash syntax used by your generated preset.
Confirm that you edited the active preset
Compare the file name in Zomboid/Server with the server’s startup or hosting-panel configuration. Editing servertest.ini has no effect when the process launches another server-name file. This is one of the most common explanations for a completely unchanged startup.
Read the logs for the specific failure
Search the server console and log files for the first meaningful error, not only the final connection failure. Useful indicators include:

- Invalid Workshop IDs, which usually mean a non-numeric value was placed in
WorkshopItems=. - Missing Mod IDs, which indicate that a downloaded package was not correctly enabled.
- Dependency errors, which mean a required package or load order is absent.
- Permission errors, which prevent the server from reading, creating, or updating its Workshop files.
- Disk-space failures, which interrupt extraction or leave an incomplete download.
- Steam download failures, which require checking Steam access and retrying after the service or network recovers.
Check Linux and Docker case sensitivity
Linux and container deployments use case-sensitive paths. A mod animation or asset reference that happened to work on a case-insensitive system can fail when its file or directory capitalization differs from the reference. Apply the workaround documented for the deployment and mod when the log points to a case mismatch. Also verify that the container volume containing the Zomboid data is the same volume used by the running server and that its permissions allow the server process to read and write.
Allow for a clean retry
Stop the server before correcting the lists. Keep the backup, fix one category of error at a time, and restart. Changing several unrelated settings while the server is running makes it difficult to tell whether the Workshop download, package ID, dependency, or file permission was fixed.

Adding a mod to an existing save does not guarantee that its map, world-generation, or persistent-data changes will appear retroactively. Some packages require a new world; others need a documented migration procedure. Read the author’s installation and migration notes before loading the mod into a valuable save.
Make a separate test world when the package changes maps, cells, spawn rules, or other permanent data. Confirm that the server starts and clients can join before applying the same list to the production save. Never delete the old save as part of an experiment.
Build 42 multiplayer status and version drift
Mod compatibility is volatile while Build 42 changes. The Indie Stone announcement reproduced in a Steam discussion states: “Multiplayer is WIP and has been released for stress testing.” That warning applies to the release described by the announcement; it is not a promise that every later unstable or stable release has identical behavior.
Before a production restart, check the current Build 42 release notes, the mod’s updated Workshop description, and any server-specific notes. An unstable update can disrupt an ongoing multiplayer game, and a mod that loaded yesterday may need a new package version, a changed Mod ID, or a different preset syntax after an update. Keep the previous preset and save backup until the new combination has been tested.
Alternative installation routes
Steam Workshop configuration is the normal route when the server can reach Steam. Other approaches solve different operational problems and introduce their own maintenance work.

Manual or local-file installation
When Workshop access is unavailable, obtain the correct mod package through a legitimate distribution method supplied by its author or deployment documentation. Copy the package while the server is stopped and preserve the directory structure expected by the game, including each package’s mod.info. Add the package’s text Mod ID to Mods=; do not invent a numeric Workshop ID for a local package.
Manual files remove Workshop’s automatic update mechanism. Record the package version, check for dependency changes yourself, and repeat the same compatibility and client-distribution checks used for Workshop mods. A local package that differs from the server’s copy can produce the same missing-mod or desynchronization symptoms as a Workshop mismatch.
Managed hosting and Docker checks
Managed hosting
If a hosting panel exposes separate fields for Workshop items and enabled mods, treat them as the two server settings described above. If it offers only a collection field, inspect the generated preset after saving and verify both lists. Confirm that the provider supports the Build 42 release you need, permits the required Workshop downloads, exposes logs, and can restore a backup before testing a world-changing mod.
Docker
For Docker, keep the Zomboid data directory in a persistent volume and edit the file inside the volume that the running container actually mounts. Restart the container only after saving the preset, then inspect container logs for Workshop, permission, disk-space, and Mod ID errors. Collections can make deployments reproducible, but they do not remove the need to verify package IDs, load order, case-sensitive paths, and client parity.

A safe update routine
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the Zomboid data directory, active save, and current server preset.
- Review each mod’s Build 42 and multiplayer status, dependencies, and update notes.
- Update the numeric Workshop IDs or local packages while preserving the existing list.
- Confirm the text Mod IDs and release-specific syntax in
Mods=. - Start a test world or staging instance when the mod changes persistent data.
- Read the startup logs through the ready state and resolve the first error shown.
- Have one client join with the exact same mod set and order.
- Only then announce the production server as available, retaining the previous backup until the session is stable.
