To install mods on a Conan Exiles Enhanced dedicated server, install the Windows server application, obtain Enhanced-compatible .pak files, copy them into ConanSandboxMods, create modlist.txt with one exact filename per line, and restart the server. Every connecting client must have the same mods enabled in the same order. Steam players normally obtain client files through Workshop subscriptions; Epic PC clients can request files through the server’s TCP mod-transfer setting.

This procedure applies to the Enhanced PC server path. Enhanced is the Unreal Engine 5 version; official console servers remain on the UE4 version. Funcom says Enhanced supports mods, but some existing mods must be upgraded before they work.

Before you begin: Enhanced compatibility and prerequisites
Conan Exiles Enhanced is not a drop-in compatibility layer for every older Conan Exiles mod. Funcom’s guidance is that “The new version fully supports mods, but some might need to be upgraded to work with Conan Exiles Enhanced.” Treat the Workshop page or the author’s release notes as the compatibility authority for each mod. Do not assume that a UE4 package works simply because it has the same name as an Enhanced release.
The server and client versions must match. Funcom states: “Your client version must match the version of the server.” Update the dedicated-server application and have players update their game before diagnosing a mod problem.

- A way to stop and start the server while changing files.
- A backup location for
game.dbbefore an upgrade or major mod change.
The documented Windows configuration path is Conan Exiles Dedicated ServerConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServer. The exact drive and parent directory depend on where Steam installed the server tools.
Install and initialize the dedicated server
1. Install the server application
- Open Steam and select Library > Tools.
- Install Conan Exiles Dedicated Server.
- Open the installation directory and confirm that it contains the
ConanSandboxserver files.
Do not copy mod files into the configuration directory. Configuration files belong under ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServer; mod archives belong under the separate ConanSandboxMods directory.

Set the basic server identity in Engine.ini and the administrator password in ServerSettings.ini. Both files are in the WindowsServer configuration directory.
ServerNamecontrols the name displayed to players.ServerPasswordsets the password required to join, when one is configured.AdminPasswordenables administrator access.
Start the unmodded server once with StartServer.bat or ConanSandboxServer.exe. A first launch creates or completes the normal save and configuration structure, making it easier to distinguish a server-installation problem from a mod problem.
3. Check the documented network ports
Funcom’s dedicated-server guide lists these default UDP ports:

Keep the host firewall and any provider-level firewall aligned with the ports you actually use. Do not open additional ports merely because a mod is installed. Mod transfer for Epic PC clients is a separate setting described below.

Steam Workshop method
For Steam players, the normal acquisition method is to open the Conan Exiles Workshop and click Subscribe on each required mod. Steam downloads the current Workshop version and keeps that client copy updated. Funcom’s technical manual calls Workshop subscription the easiest installation method.

After Steam finishes downloading, open the game’s in-game Mods screen. Confirm that each subscribed item appears there, enable the required items, and arrange their load order. This client-side list is a useful way to prepare the order you will reproduce on the dedicated server.
Manually supplied packages
A mod is distributed to the server as a .pak archive. If an administrator receives a package from a mod author or another trusted source, verify that it is an Enhanced build before using it. Keep the original filename unchanged; the filename is the identifier placed in modlist.txt.

Whichever source you use, select one version of each mod for the whole server. Mixing an old client package with a newer server package is a common cause of connection failure.
Copy the server packages and build modlist.txt
1. Stop the server
Stop the dedicated-server process before changing the mod files or load list. Editing a live installation can leave the running process with a different state from the files on disk.
2. Copy every selected archive
Create the Mods directory if the server installation does not already contain it, then copy each selected archive into:
<dedicated server folder>ConanSandboxModsDo not place the archives in Saved, Config, the Workshop cache, or the game client’s directory and expect the dedicated server to discover them. The server reads its own ConanSandboxMods folder.

3. Create the load list
In that same Mods folder, create a plain-text file named exactly modlist.txt. Put one exact .pak filename on each line, in the order the server should load the mods.
FirstModFile.pak
SecondModFile.pak
ThirdModFile.pakThe names are case-sensitive in practice on some hosting filesystems and must otherwise match character-for-character, including spaces, punctuation, and the .pak extension. Do not add bullets, commas, quotation marks, or a folder path. Do not put multiple filenames on one line.
4. Reuse a client-created list when helpful
You can configure the order in the game’s Mods screen and copy the resulting client file from the client’s ConanSandboxModsmodlist.txt to the server’s ConanSandboxModsmodlist.txt. Still verify that every listed archive was copied to the server and that the package versions are the ones you intend to run.
Restart and verify the installation
- Check that each line in
modlist.txthas a matching file inConanSandboxMods. - Start the server with
StartServer.batorConanSandboxServer.exe. - Wait for normal server initialization before asking a client to connect.
- Have a test player connect with the same mod set and order enabled.
- Change only one mod or one order position at a time when testing.
Funcom’s technical manual describes a connection check that compares the client’s selected mods with the server’s selection. Clients that do not match cannot connect. “When clients try to connect to the server, the game will first check to make sure the clients have the same mods as the server selected.” In practical terms, parity means the same files, the same versions, the same enabled state, and the same sequence.

Steam clients
Steam players should subscribe to every server-required Workshop item, wait for Steam to finish downloading, and verify the items in the in-game Mods screen. A subscription does not by itself prove that the download completed; the item must be present and enabled before joining.
If the server administrator supplied a package outside Workshop, the player needs that exact Enhanced-compatible archive through the administrator’s chosen distribution method, then must place or activate it according to the game’s Mods screen. The server cannot make a differently named or differently versioned file equivalent.
Epic PC clients and TCP mod transfer

ModFileDownload.DownloadPortOffset=2The offset is part of the server’s mod-transfer configuration. Apply it only with the current server configuration guidance and ensure the host firewall and provider rules allow the resulting transfer path. Steam clients use the Steam Workshop API instead; do not assume that a setting intended for Epic requests changes how Steam obtains Workshop files.
Because firewall layouts and hosting-provider controls differ, confirm the effective transfer port with the current Funcom instructions and your host before exposing or changing it. A client that cannot retrieve a package may show a missing-mod or mismatch symptom even when the server’s modlist.txt is correct.
Understand and manage load order
Load order is not cosmetic. The server reads modlist.txt from top to bottom, and clients must activate the same sequence. A client with the correct set of mods in a different order can still fail the connection check.
A practical order-change procedure
- Stop the server.
- Make a dated copy of the current
modlist.txt. - Change only the lines needed for the intended order.
- Confirm every filename still maps to a file in
Mods. - Start the server and test with one client whose Mods screen mirrors the file.
- Record the working order so every regular player can reproduce it.
When adding a new mod, first test it at the intended position rather than changing several positions simultaneously. That makes a startup failure or behavior change easier to attribute.

Troubleshoot common failures
The server will not start after adding a mod
- Stop the server and remove the newest mod temporarily.
- Check that every filename in
modlist.txtexactly matches a file inConanSandboxMods. - Confirm that the package is marked for Enhanced rather than only for the UE4 release.
- Restore the previous working list and start the server to isolate whether the problem is the package or the order.
If the server starts without the newest archive, leave that archive disabled until its author provides an Enhanced-compatible build or updated instructions.
A player receives a mods-mismatch error
Compare the server’s modlist.txt with the player’s enabled list in the in-game Mods screen. Check all four parity points: filename, version, enabled state, and order. A player may have subscribed to the right Workshop item but still be running an incomplete download, a stale package, or a different order.
A Workshop mod does not appear for a player
- Confirm the player clicked Subscribe to the correct Workshop item.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading it.
- Open the in-game Mods screen and verify that the item appears.
- Enable it and place it in the same order used by the server.
If it still does not appear, the player should resolve the Steam download problem before attempting to join; changing the server list will not repair a missing client package.

An Epic client cannot obtain a package
Confirm that the server’s mod-transfer setting is present under [/Script/ConanSandbox.SystemSettings], that ModFileDownload.DownloadPortOffset=2 is configured as intended, and that the firewall and hosting provider permit the required TCP transfer. Steam Workshop behavior does not validate the Epic transfer path.
A version update causes new failures
Check the server version and each client’s version first, then check whether the mod author has released an Enhanced update. Do not replace several packages at once if you need to identify the failing change. Keep the previous working files and list available while testing a new release.
Back up saves before upgrades and major mod changes
Back up the private dedicated-server game.db before moving to Enhanced or making a major server or mod update. Funcom notes that the server folder changes to Conan Exiles Enhanced Dedicated Server; make sure the intended database is in the corresponding Enhanced location after the move.
Keep an additional offline copy, such as one on a USB flash drive, before an upgrade. A backup protects the save, but it does not make UE4 and UE5 saves universally interchangeable: Funcom describes save compatibility as directional. Restore a database only according to the current migration guidance, and preserve the original backup until the upgraded server has been tested.
What to back up together
game.dbfrom the private dedicated server.- The current

.pakfiles used by that list. - The relevant
Engine.iniandServerSettings.iniconfiguration files.
Keeping the list and package files with the database gives you a reproducible pre-upgrade state if a new mod release or server update must be rolled back.

Installation checklist
- Install the dedicated-server application from Steam Library > Tools.
- Initialize the server once and verify the WindowsServer configuration directory.
- Set
ServerNameandServerPasswordinEngine.ini; setAdminPasswordinServerSettings.ini. - Confirm the default UDP ports: 7777 for game traffic, 7778 for the pinger, and 27015 for queries.
- Choose only mods identified as compatible with Conan Exiles Enhanced.
- Stop the server before editing files.
- Copy every selected

- For Steam clients, confirm Workshop download completion and activation.

The Bottom Line
The reliable Enhanced workflow is: use Enhanced-marked mods, place their exact .pak files in ConanSandboxMods, list them in order in modlist.txt, restart the server, and make every client match that list. Back up game.db before upgrades so a failed mod or migration does not become a lost world.
