Install Matplotlib through Termux’s package manager, then save a small test plot to a PNG file. This uses Termux’s repository build and checks more than whether Python can import the library.
Install Matplotlib from the Termux repository
Open Termux and update its package information before installing Matplotlib. A Termux maintainer recommended updating packages and installing Matplotlib from the repository; the repository package is the preferred starting point for a Termux setup. Termux maintainer discussion
pkg updatepkg upgradepkg install matplotlib
If pkg upgrade presents a list of proposed changes, review it before confirming. An upgrade can affect other installed packages, so do not accept changes unattended if you are unsure what they will do.
The Termux package is built for its repository rather than being an arbitrary desktop wheel. A historical package build record lists Python, NumPy, Pillow, and pip among its dependencies; it does not establish the current Matplotlib version. Termux package build record

You do not need to install pip separately for this Matplotlib route if the repository package and its dependencies install successfully. If another Python task specifically reports that pip is missing, install it with pkg install python-pip; Termux’s Python build configuration treats pip as a separate package in some configurations. Verify that Matplotlib can create a plot
Run this block in Termux. It selects the noninteractive Agg backend, creates a simple plot, saves it as a PNG, and reports the file size:

PYA successful run prints the installed version and a positive PNG byte count. The resulting file, termux-matplotlib-check.png, is in Termux’s current working directory. This verifies importing Matplotlib, creating a figure, rendering it, and writing an output file; it does not test opening a plot in an Android window. What to do if installation or the test fails
Package update or install cannot reach a repository
If pkg update or pkg install fails before Matplotlib is installed, first check network access and the configured Termux mirror. Follow Termux’s package-management guidance for updating packages or changing mirrors; a repository connection problem is different from a Matplotlib import or plotting error. Considering pip instead
Use pkg install matplotlib as the default for Termux rather than assuming a desktop wheel will work on Android. Matplotlib’s installation documentation explains that pip may build from source when it cannot find a suitable wheel; --prefer-binary can prefer binary distributions where possible, but does not guarantee a compatible Termux wheel. Import works but no window appears
The verification command deliberately uses Agg and writes a file instead of opening a graphical window. A successful PNG check confirms plotting output in a headless terminal workflow; it does not establish that a particular Android display setup can show interactive plot windows.

The cited Termux records establish a repository package and its historical dependencies, but do not establish the current repository version or guarantee compatibility across every CPU architecture, Android release, Termux distribution source, or signing and repository combination. Let Termux resolve the available package for your configured repository rather than pinning an unsupported version.
