The best payment method depends on what the AI agent is buying. For shopping at a merchant, network-backed card checkout is designed to extend familiar card infrastructure to agent-initiated purchases. For paying a digital service over the web, x402 supports stablecoin payments through an HTTP flow. AP2 is a framework that can accommodate different payment methods, not a payment instrument on its own. None of these approaches is universally accepted or established as safest or cheapest; support and protections depend on the provider, merchant, implementation and jurisdiction.
Which payment method fits the purchase?
| Approach | Best fit | Payment mechanism | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network-backed agent checkout | An agent buying from a participating merchant | Card-network infrastructure adapted for agent-driven checkout | Whether the merchant and payment provider support the specific agent flow, and what approval and dispute rules apply |
| AP2 | Systems that need a framework for agent payment interactions | A protocol framework that can support different payment methods and authentication approaches | Which payment method and authentication mechanism the implementation actually uses |
| x402 | An agent accessing a paid online service or resource | Stablecoin payment over HTTP, using the 402 Payment Required status | Whether the service endpoint accepts it, and the applicable wallet, currency, network, fees and recovery process |
These are not interchangeable products. Network programs target merchant checkout, AP2 provides a framework, and x402 addresses online service payments. A merchant or service must support the relevant implementation; a protocol announcement alone does not make an agent payment option available at checkout.

For shopping at a merchant: network-backed card checkout
Card-network approaches aim to connect agent-initiated purchases to existing merchant checkout infrastructure. Visa says its Trusted Agent Protocol is intended to help merchants identify legitimate agents and support agent-driven checkout. Mastercard describes Agent Pay for Machines as infrastructure for high-frequency, low-latency, low-value payments by agents and machines. Those descriptions indicate intended use, not universal merchant acceptance.
Visa and Mastercard have reported protocols, partners and demonstrations, but those are not proof that a particular store accepts an agent purchase today. Check with the merchant and the payment provider for availability, required setup and the actual approval flow. Mastercard said more than 30 industry leaders were early supporters or participants of Agent Pay for Machines in its June 10, 2026 announcement; that participation figure does not establish broadly available consumer checkout.

For paying an online service: x402
Coinbase describes x402 as an open, web-native protocol for stablecoin payments over HTTP, using the 402 Payment Required status. In practical terms, a service can request payment as part of an HTTP interaction, allowing an agent to pay for an online resource it is trying to access. That makes x402 relevant to digital services, not a generally accepted way to pay at ordinary retail checkout.
A Visa and Artemis report announcement estimated roughly $15.0 million in adjusted volume across 109.6 million transactions since x402 launched in May 2025. This is a report-specific onchain estimate, not a measure of all agent commerce or a forecast. It also does not tell an individual user whether a particular service accepts x402, what fees apply, or how refunds and disputes work.

What AP2 does—and what it does not do
Google presents the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) as a framework for agent payments that can accommodate different payment methods and authentication approaches. Google also documents an A2A x402 extension for crypto payments. AP2 therefore should not be treated as a card, wallet or settlement network by itself: the payment method depends on the implementation using it.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle said more than 60 organizations collaborated on AP2 in its 2025 announcement. That is an ecosystem participation figure, not proof of adoption at a given merchant or evidence of transaction volume. For a business evaluating AP2, determine which payment method, authentication and merchant connections its intended implementation supports.

How to choose safely
Do not choose solely by the protocol name. Review the specific implementation and the party responsible for each control, especially before enabling an agent to spend without approving every transaction.
- Authorization: Does the user approve each payment, or grant standing authority? Can the agent act only after a clear confirmation?
- Spending governance: Can you set a per-purchase cap, total budget, merchant or category restrictions, and an expiry? Can you pause or revoke access?
- Credential custody: Where are card details, wallet keys or payment credentials held, and which service can use them?
- Visibility: Can you see the merchant or endpoint, amount, currency, time and status of each attempted and completed payment?
- Refunds and disputes: Who handles a mistaken or unauthorized payment, and what route applies to a refund, chargeback or service complaint?
- Availability and cost: Confirm the supported merchants or endpoints, jurisdiction, currencies and any fees with the provider. Comparable fee schedules and consumer-protection terms are not established across these options.

What to verify before relying on a method
- Identify whether the agent is buying from a merchant or paying an online service; the purchase context narrows the relevant options.
- Ask the merchant or service and your agent/payment provider whether the exact payment flow is supported now, in your jurisdiction and for your intended currency.
- Inspect the implementation’s approval settings, spending restrictions, credential handling and transaction records before granting payment authority.
- Find the provider’s documented refund and dispute route, then make sure you know how to revoke the agent’s access.
For developers and merchants, AP2, x402, network programs and managed services are potential integration paths rather than interchangeable payment products. Confirm current documentation, launch status, supported payment methods and currencies, jurisdictional availability and merchant requirements before selecting an approach. AWS identifies AgentCore Payments as a preview in its announcement.
