To install macOS 27 Golden Gate, first confirm that your exact Mac model is on Apple’s compatibility list, complete and verify a backup, then open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts if the upgrade is offered. Keep the Mac awake throughout installation; a laptop’s lid should stay open.
Check whether your Mac is compatible
Apple’s compatibility guidance, published September 14, 2026, says macOS 27 supports Macs using Apple silicon, including M-series and A-series chips. Its supported-model list covers MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook Neo, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro. A family name alone is not enough to establish eligibility: check your exact model and year against Apple’s current macOS 27 compatibility list.

Compatibility and availability are separate checks. Software Update offers software compatible with the Mac model. If macOS 27 is missing, compare your exact model with Apple’s list, then reopen or refresh Software Update. Apple notes that an update that is unnecessary or incompatible may not be offered, and the Mac can be reported as up to date; repeated checks cannot make an unsupported Mac eligible. Prepare a backup before upgrading
Back up important files before installing a major macOS upgrade. Apple’s built-in Time Machine can back up to external USB or Thunderbolt storage. Apple recommends a drive with at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac as an ideal backup-disk size; that is not a stated minimum for every setup, and it is not the free-space requirement for the macOS installer.

Choose and set up the backup disk
- Use storage that works with a port available on your Mac. A suitable drive you already own is enough; you do not need to buy a new one just for the upgrade.
- Apple recommends dedicating the Time Machine disk to backups. During setup, macOS may ask to erase the selected device. Confirm that you have selected the intended disk and do not approve erasure if it contains the only copy of files you need.
- If you enable backup encryption, keep the password you create. Apple says you need it to restore files from that backup.
Follow Apple’s Time Machine setup instructions, then check the Time Machine menu for the latest backup time. Proceed only after a recent backup has completed. Time Machine retains hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for previous months; when the disk fills, it deletes the oldest backups.
Install macOS 27 through Software Update
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. You can also search for Software Update in Spotlight.
- Let Software Update check for available software. If macOS 27 is offered for your Mac, choose the update, upgrade, or restart control shown on screen and follow the prompts.
- Enter your Mac administrator password if requested.
- Keep the Mac awake until installation finishes. If it is a laptop, leave the lid open. The Mac may restart more than once, show progress bars, or display a blank screen during the process.
Use the on-screen status as your guide and allow the installation to complete rather than treating a restart, progress bar, or temporary blank screen as proof that it has failed. Apple’s instructions are in its macOS update guide.

If macOS 27 is not offered or needs reinstalling
If Software Update says the Mac is up to date but macOS 27 is not listed, first verify the exact model against Apple’s compatibility list. Reopen or refresh Software Update after that check. If the model is unsupported, there is no Software Update action that makes it eligible.
If installation succeeds but macOS later needs to be installed again, Apple directs users to reinstall macOS through macOS Recovery.
