Most people measure a little taller after waking than later in the day. The main reason is that standing and sitting load the spine, temporarily compressing the intervertebral discs between the vertebrae. Rest and sleep unload the spine, allowing the discs to recover. Your bones are not shortening and lengthening each day.
What changes in your spine over the day?
The intervertebral discs between the bones of your spine help cushion and distribute loads. When you are upright, pressure on the spine causes the discs to lose some fluid, volume and height temporarily. When that load is reduced during rest and sleep, they recover. This makes a small difference to measured stature without changing the length of your bones.
An MRI study by Botsford, Esses and Ogilvie-Harris examined eight healthy men after four hours standing and three hours sitting. The researchers found an average 16.2% decrease in volume across the lower three lumbar discs under that simulated activity protocol. At individual levels, the average volume decrease was 21.1% at L3–4, 18.7% at L4–5 and 21.6% at L5–S1. Those percentages describe disc volume, not total body height; the small study does not establish what happens to every person or under every daily routine. Read the study.
How much height can you lose during the day?
There is no single amount that applies to everyone. In a 488-day study of two children and one adult, Kobayashi and Togo reported average daytime stature losses of 1.78 cm for the older child, 1.61 cm for the younger child and 1.43 cm for the adult. Because the study followed only three people, these figures illustrate possible variation rather than predict an individual’s daily change. Read the study.

When does most of the change happen?
A study of 53 children measured at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. found that stature fell clearly during the morning, with little additional loss from 1 to 3 p.m. In its unstretched group, mean losses were 0.31 cm from 9 to 11 a.m., 0.20 cm from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 0.045 cm from 1 to 3 p.m. These are results from children in that study, not a precise schedule for adults. The authors concluded: “As most height loss occurs in the morning, afternoon clinic appointments would be preferable.” Read the study.
Does stretching bring back your morning height?
Not according to the same study. The stretched technique shifted recorded height by an average of 0.28 cm, but did not reduce the day’s variation. The authors wrote: “The standard stretched technique does not appear to reduce diurnal variation, nor does it affect precision.” Stretching may change how a measurement is recorded, but this evidence does not support it as a way to prevent the normal daily change. How to compare height measurements fairly
Time-of-day variation can make repeat measurements misleading if the conditions change. For a more useful comparison, keep the following consistent:
- Time: Measure at roughly the same time of day each time.
- Instrument: Use the same height-measuring device or the same wall-and-book setup.
- Posture: Stand in the same position and use the same measurement technique.
- Observer: If possible, have the same person take each measurement.

How is a daily difference different from ongoing height loss?
A morning-to-evening difference is temporary and linked to daily loading and unloading of the spine. A downward trend over months or years is a separate issue; an ordinary daily fluctuation does not explain or rule out persistent height loss. Adult height loss can have clinical relevance, but the cited clinical reference does not provide a universal self-diagnosis threshold. Read the reference.
