How to Install Lock-Screen Widgets on Android: Samsung, Pixel Tablet and Alternatives

Android lock-screen widgets are manufacturer-specific. Follow the correct Samsung Galaxy or Pixel Tablet path, check other devices for a widget picker, and use shortcuts or notifications when native support is absent.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android does not have one universal lock-screen-widget system. Supported Samsung Galaxy phones and Pixel Tablets provide native widget areas, while Pixel phones and many other Android devices use shortcuts, notifications, At a Glance, or device controls instead. Your manufacturer, model, Android or One UI version, and form factor determine which instructions apply.

First, identify what you want to add

A true lock-screen widget is a panel placed in a dedicated lock-screen area, such as a clock, weather, battery, calendar, or timer. It is different from:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Shortcuts: Fixed actions such as Camera, Flashlight, Wallet, or QR Scanner.
  • Notifications: Messages, reminders, deliveries, and other app updates.
  • At a Glance: Google’s contextual cards for weather, appointments, tasks, travel, and similar information.
  • Device controls: Smart-home or media controls available while the device is locked.
  • Always On Display (AOD): Idle-screen content governed by separate settings.

Which Android devices support lock-screen widgets?

Device Native support Where to look Fallback
Supported Samsung Galaxy phone Yes, with model and One UI differences Lock-screen editor: Widgets, Add widgets, FaceWidgets, or Brief widgets Home-screen widgets or notifications
Google Pixel phone No general arbitrary-widget picker is documented Shortcuts, notifications, At a Glance, and device controls Home-screen widgets
Google Pixel Tablet Yes Settings > Hub Mode > Lock screen Home-screen widgets
Other Android phone or tablet Manufacturer-dependent Search the lock-screen customization editor Notifications or home-screen widgets
Foldable cover screen Model- and software-dependent Use the cover-screen settings for that model Shortcuts and notifications

Android requires ordinary AppWidget support through the launcher, but the platform allows manufacturers to decide whether to expose widgets on the lock screen. See the Android Compatibility Definition.

Samsung Galaxy: add widgets from the lock screen

Samsung’s labels differ by model and One UI release. Newer software may place the feature under Brief widgets; older guides may call it Lock screen widgets or FaceWidgets.

  1. Lock the phone.
  2. Touch and hold the lock screen.
  3. Authenticate if requested.
  4. Tap Widgets, Add widgets, or Brief widgets.
  5. Swipe through the available categories and select a widget.
  6. Choose a style or layout when Samsung offers one.
  7. Repeat the process for additional widgets.
  8. Touch and hold a widget to reposition it, where supported.
  9. Use the remove or red-minus control to delete a widget, then tap Done.

Samsung examples include Battery, Clock, Reminder, Calendar, and Camera, but the catalog depends on the model, installed apps, country, carrier, and software. Samsung’s current instructions are at Samsung Support.

Brief widgets on newer One UI versions

Samsung says functions formerly grouped as lock-screen widgets or FaceWidgets have been incorporated into Brief widgets. If an older tutorial tells you to open FaceWidgets and that option is missing, search the lock-screen editor for Brief widgets instead. Details are described by Samsung’s Brief widgets guide.

Lock-screen widgets and Always On Display

On supported Galaxy devices, lock-screen widgets may also appear on the Always On Display. Open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display, enable AOD, and review the available display options. One UI generations expose different controls, and an AOD mode may show less information or provide no interaction even when the widget appears on the normal lock screen.

Google Pixel phones: use the supported lock-screen surfaces

Google’s current Pixel-phone documentation covers clock styles, shortcuts, notification visibility, At a Glance, Now Playing-related information, and device controls. It does not document a general picker for arbitrary third-party home-screen widgets. Therefore, on a Pixel phone you generally cannot add ordinary app widgets to the lock screen through the standard customization interface.

Use Settings > Wallpaper & style > Lock screen (the exact path can vary) to configure the available shortcuts, clock, notifications, and controls. For weather, appointments, tasks, or travel information, configure At a Glance where it is available. Google says the full At a Glance experience applies to Pixel devices running Android 12 and later, but availability varies by device, language, country, account, and settings. See Pixel lock-screen help and At a Glance help.

Pixel Tablet: enable and install lock-screen widgets

Turn on the widget panel

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Hub Mode.
  3. Tap Lock screen.
  4. Turn on Show widgets on lock screen.

Add, move, resize, or remove widgets

  1. On the locked tablet, swipe from the right edge toward the left to open the widget area.
  2. Touch and hold the widget screen.
  3. Tap Customize widgets, then Add widget.
  4. Touch and hold a widget and drag it to the desired position.
  5. For a widget marked with a plus sign, use the resize control and drag its edge.
  6. To remove one, touch and hold the widget screen, tap Customize widgets, select the widget, and choose Remove.
  7. Tap Done.

Google lists Clock, Timer, and Weather as examples; the available catalog depends on the tablet and installed apps. If the panel is absent, the setting may be disabled or all widgets may have been removed. See Google’s Pixel Tablet instructions and Hub Mode help.

Other Android phones: check the manufacturer’s lock-screen editor

  1. Open the lock-screen customization screen, usually by touching and holding the lock screen or opening Settings > Lock screen.
  2. Look for Widgets, Add widgets, Brief widgets, FaceWidgets, or Customize.
  3. If a picker exists, add and arrange widgets using the labels shown on that device.
  4. If no widget control exists, check the manufacturer’s model-specific support page and software updates.

Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Asus, Sony, and other manufacturers may implement different systems—or none at all. A normal home-screen widget does not automatically qualify for the lock screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why an app is missing from the lock-screen picker

Four separate conditions must be satisfied: the app must be installed, it must provide a standard Android AppWidget, the manufacturer must permit that widget in its lock-screen container, and the widget must be compatible with that container.

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen and tap Widgets.
  2. Search for the app. If it has no home-screen widget, it probably cannot supply a lock-screen widget.
  3. If it works on the home screen but not the lock screen, the device software may filter third-party widgets.
  4. Update the app and system, open and configure the app once, then revisit the lock-screen editor.

Google’s standard widget instructions are at Android Help. Work profiles, restricted users, battery policies, and enterprise management can hide or block widgets.

What happens when you tap one?

Behavior is widget- and device-dependent. A widget may show limited information while locked, require authentication for an action, or launch its app only after an unlock gesture. Samsung describes tapping a lock-screen widget and swiping up to open the app or view more information. A widget never automatically grants unrestricted access to private app data.

Troubleshooting

No Widgets option appears

  • Confirm you are holding the actual lock screen, not the home screen.
  • Authenticate once if the editor requires it.
  • Search for Brief widgets, Add widgets, FaceWidgets, or Customize.
  • Check Settings > Lock screen, install updates, and restart.
  • If no related control exists, the device may not support native lock-screen widgets.

The widget is blank

  • Grant the app permission to access its data.
  • Complete the app’s initial setup, preferably by adding its home-screen widget first.
  • Check connectivity and battery restrictions.
  • Unlock the phone once after installation and allow the widget time to refresh.
  • Review lock-screen privacy settings that may hide content.

The widget vanished after an update

Reopen the editor and look for a renamed control, a migrated layout, or a reset AOD setting. On Samsung, check Brief widgets if the former widget area disappeared.

Privacy and security checklist

  • Lock the device and view it as another person would.
  • Check whether calendar events, reminders, health data, messages, or smart-home status are visible.
  • Review lock-screen notification visibility and sensitive-content settings.
  • Test whether tapping, expanding, or controlling the widget requires authentication.
  • Prefer view-only, non-sensitive information such as weather or a timer when convenience matters less than privacy.

Google documents notification and sensitive-content controls in its Pixel lock-screen settings.

When native widgets are unavailable

  • Use home-screen widgets: Touch and hold an empty home-screen area, tap Widgets, select an app, then drag its widget onto the home screen.
  • Use notifications: Messaging, delivery, calendar, fitness, and news apps may provide the information through lock-screen notifications.
  • Use Pixel shortcuts and At a Glance: These are the documented Pixel-phone alternatives for quick actions and contextual information.
  • Use device controls: Supported Pixel devices and tablets may expose smart-home or media controls while locked.

Third-party lock-screen apps or unofficial modules cannot guarantee a widget surface on a phone whose manufacturer does not expose one. They may require notification, accessibility, overlay, or device-control access, and updates can break compatibility. Avoid treating them as a universal fix or sideloading APKs as a default solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add any Android widget to the lock screen?

No. The app must provide a widget, and the device manufacturer must allow that widget in its lock-screen interface.

Why is my home-screen widget missing from the lock-screen picker?

Home-screen and lock-screen pickers are separate systems. The manufacturer may restrict the widget, or the widget may not support the lock-screen container.

Do Pixel phones support lock-screen widgets?

Google’s current Pixel-phone interface does not document a general arbitrary-widget picker. Use shortcuts, notifications, At a Glance, or device controls instead. Pixel Tablet has a separate native widget system.

Does Android 16 add lock-screen widgets to every phone?

No universal rollout is established. Lock-screen support remains dependent on the device maker, model, software build, and form factor.

Can widgets appear on Always On Display?

On supported Samsung devices they may, when AOD is enabled, but visibility and interaction depend on One UI version and the selected AOD mode.

Why does Samsung call them Brief widgets?

Samsung has incorporated functions formerly labeled Lock screen widgets or FaceWidgets into Brief widgets on newer software.

The Bottom Line

Use Samsung’s lock-screen editor on supported Galaxy phones, Hub Mode on Pixel Tablet, and manufacturer-specific settings elsewhere. If your device has no widget picker, rely on shortcuts, notifications, At a Glance, device controls, or home-screen widgets rather than assuming an app can add one.
