Kodi installs on compatible, Android-based Fire TV devices running Fire OS by sideloading Kodi’s Android APK. Rooting is not required. First check the operating system: the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and other Vega OS devices are not compatible with this Android-APK method. On an eligible Firestick, the simplest route is Downloader; ADB is a useful computer-based alternative.
Check whether your Firestick supports Kodi
“Firestick” now covers devices running different operating systems. Fire OS is Amazon’s Android-based platform, while Vega OS is a separate platform. Amazon identifies the Fire TV Stick 4K Select as a Vega OS device and says future Fire TV Sticks will use Vega (Amazon Fire TV platform information; Amazon SDK information; Amazon’s Vega OS announcement).

On the Fire TV home screen, open Settings, choose My Fire TV (or Device), then About. Read the exact model and operating-system details.

If your device runs Vega OS, stop here. Kodi’s Android package is not a native Vega application, and no official Kodi Vega release is established by the sources above. Do not attempt random “Kodi for Vega” downloads, rooting, firmware modification, or Google Play workarounds.

What Kodi is—and what installation does not provide
Kodi is a free, open-source media player and media-center application. Its official Android packages are available through Kodi’s Android download page and official Kodi infrastructure (download delivery page).
Installing Kodi gives you the application, not free access to paid films, channels, sports, or subscription services. Add only media you own or services and add-ons you are authorized to use. “Fully loaded” builds and pirated add-on bundles are separate, untrusted software.
What you need
- A compatible Android-based Fire TV device running Fire OS.
- An internet connection and available internal storage.
- Either the Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore or a computer with Android SDK Platform-Tools for ADB.
- The official Kodi Android download page, not an old fixed APK link or an unofficial mirror.
Enable installation permission
Fire TV menu labels vary by software version. On current interfaces, open Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options > Install Unknown Apps, select Downloader, and switch it On. Older interfaces may show Apps from Unknown Sources instead.
If Developer Options is missing, open Settings > My Fire TV > About, highlight the device name, and press the remote’s select button seven times. Return to the previous menu and open Developer Options. Amazon documents these labels and the seven-click behavior in its Fire TV ADB guide.

This permission lets the selected app install packages outside the Amazon Appstore. Grant it only to a downloader you trust, and turn it off after installation if you want a more restrictive setup. ADB Debugging is not required for the Downloader method.
Install Kodi with Downloader
- From the Fire TV home screen, open Find, Search, or the Appstore search.
- Search for Downloader. Select the legitimate app, choose Get, Download, or Install, and open it.
- In Downloader, select the URL field and enter https://kodi.tv/download/android.
- Choose the Android download offered by Kodi. If several architectures are shown, use Kodi’s recommended package for your hardware; do not guess at x86. Kodi’s Android guidance explains that ARM and x86 choices depend on the device (Kodi Android installation guidance).
- Wait for the APK to finish downloading, then select Install.
- When the package installer completes, choose Open to start Kodi or Done to return to Downloader.
- Delete the downloaded APK when prompted if you need to recover storage, then launch Kodi from the Apps area or installed-apps list.
Use the stable release channel for a normal installation. The official mirror separates stable Omega releases (including Kodi 21.3 at the time of the cited listing) from nightly and test builds (stable Android releases; nightly builds; test builds). Do not hard-code an old version number or recommend a development build unless you are deliberately testing one.
Install Kodi with ADB instead
ADB is appropriate when Downloader fails, the APK is already on your computer, or you want a repeatable installation. It is more technical and requires a computer.
Prepare Fire TV
- Open Settings > My Fire TV (or Device) > Developer Options.
- Enable ADB Debugging.
- Enable Apps from Unknown Sources or the applicable installation permission.
- Open the device’s network information and note its IP address.
Keep ADB Debugging off when you are not using it; wireless ADB permits connections from devices on the same network while enabled.

Prepare the computer and install
Install Android SDK Platform-Tools, which includes ADB, from Google’s official Platform-Tools page. Download the Kodi APK from Kodi’s official page, then run:
adb connect FIRE_TV_IP_ADDRESS:5555
adb devices
adb install /path/to/kodi.apkTo update an existing installation while retaining its app data, use:
adb install -r /path/to/kodi.apkAmazon documents both commands and notes that reinstalling does not replace existing user data or cache (Amazon installation and launch documentation). A successful install returns Success. Accept any authorization prompt on the television and retry if necessary. If adb devices lists nothing, check the Wi-Fi network, IP address, ADB Debugging setting, firewall, and authorization prompt.

After installation, Kodi may request permission to access files or media, take extra time to create its folders, or show a blank/default home screen. Those are normal first-run states, not proof that installation failed.

If Kodi is not in the first Apps row, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Kodi > Launch application. Sideloaded apps can also appear in Recent or My Library rows, as Amazon explains in its installation documentation.

Downloader cannot install unknown apps
- Return to Developer Options > Install Unknown Apps and turn Downloader on.
- If Developer Options is absent, expose it by selecting the device name seven times under About.
- Confirm that the device is Fire OS, not Vega OS; changing permissions cannot make an Android APK compatible with Vega.
“App not installed”
Common causes include a wrong architecture, incompatible Android/Fire OS version, insufficient storage, a corrupt download, conflicting Kodi package state, or a Vega OS device. Confirm the model and OS, download again from Kodi’s official page, free storage, restart Fire TV, and retry. If updating, use the matching official package. Uninstall and reinstall only as a last resort because uninstalling can remove Kodi’s local data and settings. ADB may expose a more specific error.
Parse error or “There was a problem parsing the package”
Redownload from the current Kodi Android page, choose the stable package it recommends, and avoid obsolete direct filenames. Wrong architecture, a damaged APK, an incompatible Android version, or attempting Android software on Vega OS can all produce this message.

Kodi installs but will not open
- Restart Fire TV.
- Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Kodi and choose Force Stop.
- Try Clear Cache.
- Use Clear Data only if you accept losing Kodi settings and local data.
- Reinstall the official stable build if the problem persists.
Not enough storage
- Delete the downloaded APK after installation.
- Remove unused apps and clear unnecessary caches.
- Avoid large third-party Kodi builds, which can consume substantial space.
- Do not assume external storage will solve every problem; Fire TV storage behavior varies by generation (Amazon storage documentation).
ADB cannot connect
Verify that the computer and Fire TV share the same Wi-Fi network, the IP address is current, ADB Debugging is enabled, the firewall allows the connection, and the on-screen authorization request was accepted. A reboot can change the device’s IP address.

Security, privacy, and legal boundaries
- Use kodi.tv or Kodi’s official infrastructure for the APK.
- Unknown-source permission is a capability, not a safety guarantee. The package and source still need to be trusted.
- Disable Downloader’s installation permission after setup if you no longer need it, and keep ADB Debugging off except during ADB work.
- A VPN is not required to install Kodi, cannot fix incompatible hardware or malware, and does not make unauthorized streaming lawful.
Sideloading itself does not establish whether a particular activity is legal; that depends on the content, add-ons, jurisdiction, and applicable account terms.
Uninstall Kodi or undo the installation settings
To remove Kodi, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Kodi and choose Uninstall. This can delete Kodi’s local data and settings. In the same Developer Options area, turn Install Unknown Apps off for Downloader (or disable the older global unknown-sources setting) and turn off ADB Debugging when finished.
What to do after installation
Add personal media sources, configure legitimate services, and install only add-ons from sources you trust and are authorized to use. Kodi’s installation does not itself supply premium channels or copyrighted media.

Check the operating system before doing anything else: Downloader or ADB can install Kodi on compatible Fire OS devices, but the Android APK method does not apply to Vega OS models such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Select.
