To install Google Keyboard on a Samsung Galaxy device, download Gboard—Google Keyboard’s current app name—from Google Play, then choose it in your Galaxy keyboard settings. You can configure languages and typing features in Gboard after switching. Menu labels vary across Galaxy models, regions, and software versions, so use Settings search if the path below does not match your screen.
Install Gboard from Google Play

Open Google Play on your Galaxy phone or tablet.

Search for Gboard and install the app published by Google LLC. Google Play describes it as “the Google Keyboard.” View Gboard on Google Play.

Make Gboard your default keyboard

Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default.

If Gboard appears in the keyboard list but is off, turn it on. Then tap Default keyboard and select Gboard.

Open an app with a text field and tap the field to bring up the keyboard. If Gboard appears, the change is active.
These labels follow Samsung Canada’s Galaxy phone instructions, last updated March 28, 2026. Samsung notes that screens and steps can vary by country, model, and software version. If you cannot find the menu, search Settings for Keyboard list and default. Samsung’s keyboard settings guide.

Set up languages, layouts, and typing features
With Gboard open in a text field, use its feature menu or open Gboard settings to choose the options you want. Google lists glide typing, voice typing, handwriting, emoji and GIF search, multilingual typing, and Google Translate while typing among its features. Some features are not supported on Android Go devices. Google Play’s Gboard listing.

Add a language or layout
In Gboard settings, add the language and layout you need, then select it while typing. Changing a language in Gboard changes keyboard input, not your Android device’s display language. Google’s instructions for changing Gboard languages.

Choose voice typing with language limits in mind
Voice typing availability depends on language; Google warns that talk-to-text does not work with every language. Check whether it supports your preferred language before relying on it. Google’s Gboard voice-typing help.
If Gboard disappears or will not open
After an update, Gboard may no longer be enabled in the keyboard list. Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default, turn Gboard on if needed, and select it again under Default keyboard. If your menu differs, search Settings for the keyboard controls; Samsung says available screens vary by device and software version. Gboard or Samsung Keyboard: what should guide your choice?
There is no universal best keyboard established by the available product and support information. Compare the features you use, your language and layout needs, and your privacy preferences. Samsung’s instructions describe Samsung Keyboard as the default and provide the controls to choose another installed keyboard, including Gboard.

Google’s Gboard help says that searches and usage statistics are sent to Google, and that voice is sent to Google for transcription when talk-to-text is used. Google also says other typed content, such as passwords and chats, and saved words are not sent.
