To install an EXILED plugin, first install the EXILED framework that matches your SCP: Secret Laboratory server build, then copy the plugin’s release .dll into EXILED’s plugin directory and restart or reload the server. Windows uses %AppData%EXILEDPlugins; Linux uses ~/.config/EXILED/Plugins. Verify the result in the server console, because a file appearing in the directory does not prove that the plugin loaded.

What EXILED is—and what you are actually installing
EXILED is a server-side plugin framework for SCP: Secret Laboratory. It provides an event system for changing or extending server behavior; those events use Harmony, while framework code is kept outside the main server assembly. That separation can reduce the effect of some small game updates, but it does not remove the need for a compatible EXILED release whenever the game changes.

There are two separate installation jobs:
- Framework installation: installs EXILED, its loader, configuration directories and supporting files.
- Plugin installation: adds an individual plugin assembly to EXILED’s plugin location.
Installing only a plugin DLL will not work on a server that has no EXILED framework. Conversely, installing EXILED does not install any third-party plugins automatically.
Choose the correct file and path

The file you copy must be the plugin’s compiled release asset and it must be a .dll. A source-code archive, README, project file, screenshot or unrelated dependency is not a loadable plugin assembly. Use the plugin author’s release page to identify the correct DLL and read any version or dependency notes supplied with it.

Do not confuse the plugin directory with EXILED’s configuration directory. EXILED configuration normally lives in Configs, not beside the DLLs, and plugin settings normally do not belong in SCP: Secret Laboratory’s base config_gameplay.txt.
Before you begin
- Confirm whether the server runs on Windows or Linux and identify the operating-system account that starts it.
- Stop the server before copying framework files or replacing a plugin. A running process can keep old assemblies in memory and can overwrite files during shutdown.
- Back up the server files and configuration before changing the framework, loader or plugins.
- Check that the EXILED release and the plugin release support the SCP: Secret Laboratory game version currently installed.
- Make sure you can access the server console or dashboard after startup; that is where EXILED reports load success and errors.
If the game has just updated, do not assume the newest EXILED build is already compatible. A game update can leave EXILED temporarily incompatible until a matching release is published.

Install EXILED on Windows
Automatic installation
- Download
Exiled.Installer-Win.exefrom the EXILED release assets. - Place the installer in the dedicated-server folder.
- Run it as the same Windows account that starts the SCP: Secret Laboratory server, or run it as an administrator.
- Start the server once so EXILED can create its directories and load its components.
- Continue with the plugin-copy procedure in the next section; the installer installs the framework, not the individual plugin you want to use.
Running the installer under a different account can put files in that account’s profile. If the server later runs under another account, it may look in a different %AppData% directory and appear not to have EXILED installed.
Manual installation from the archive
- Download
Exiled.tar.gzfrom the EXILED release assets and extract it. - Move the extracted
EXILEDfolder toC:Users<User>AppDataRoaming, which is the Windows%AppData%directory. - Move the extracted
SCP Secret Laboratoryfolder to that same%AppData%location. - Do not put the
EXILEDfolder inside anSCP Secret Laboratorysubfolder; both extracted folders belong directly under the roaming profile location. - Start the dedicated server and inspect its console for EXILED’s startup and plugin messages.
Install an EXILED plugin on Windows
- Stop the SCP: Secret Laboratory server.
- Obtain the plugin’s compiled release DLL. If the download is a ZIP or another archive, extract it first and select the actual plugin
.dll. - Open
C:Users<User>AppDataRoamingEXILEDPlugins, or enter%AppData%EXILEDPluginsin File Explorer’s address bar. - Copy the DLL directly into that folder. Do not leave it inside a nested archive-extraction folder unless the plugin’s instructions explicitly require a subfolder.
- Remove an older copy only when the plugin’s update instructions say to replace it. Keeping two versions of the same assembly can cause duplicate-load or conflict errors.
- Start the server and read the console or hosting dashboard for the plugin-load report.
After the first successful framework start, EXILED’s configuration files are created under %AppData%EXILEDConfigs. A plugin may create its own configuration file there or use another location documented by its author.

Install EXILED on Linux
Automatic installation
- Download the executable named
Exiled.Installer-Linux. - Run it from the server directory, or provide the server path explicitly:
./Exiled.Installer-Linux --path /path/to/server. - If you intentionally need the latest prerelease rather than a stable build, add
--pre-releases. For example:./Exiled.Installer-Linux /home/scp/server --pre-releases. - Run the installer as the account that starts the SCP server, or as root. When root is used, check ownership before starting the game as an unprivileged account.
- Start the server once and inspect the console before adding plugins.
Use the prerelease switch only deliberately. A prerelease may be needed for a newly updated game, but it is not automatically the safest choice for a production server.
Manual installation from the archive
- Download the EXILED archive and extract it with
tar -xzvf EXILED.tar.gz. - Move the extracted
EXILEDdirectory into the server user’s~/.configdirectory. - Move the extracted
SCP Secret Laboratorydirectory into that same~/.configdirectory. - Place each plugin DLL in
~/.config/EXILED/Plugins. - If you extracted or copied files while logged in as root, verify that the target
.configtree belongs to the account that runs the SCP server and that this account can read the DLLs. - Start the server and check the console for EXILED’s load report.
Linux paths are case-sensitive. EXILED, Plugins and SCP Secret Laboratory must use the expected capitalization.
Current LabAPI-based Linux layouts
Some current hosting-panel instructions load EXILED through Northwood’s LabAPI loader rather than relying only on the older folder-move procedure. If your panel or EXILED release documentation specifies this layout, follow its directory structure instead of combining files from unrelated installation methods.
A typical SFTP sequence for that layout is:
- Stop the server.
- Upload the
EXILED/directory to the server user’s.configdirectory. - Upload
Exiled.Loader.dllto.config/SCP Secret Laboratory/LabAPI/plugins/global/. - Upload the required dependency files to
.config/SCP Secret Laboratory/LabAPI/dependencies/global/. - Create
plugins/global/ordependencies/global/if they do not exist, preserving the exact case. - Start the server and inspect the dashboard console for EXILED’s plugin-load report.
Do not replace the complete SCP Secret Laboratory folder when using an SFTP panel. That folder also contains server configuration, and replacing it wholesale can remove or overwrite settings unrelated to EXILED. Upload only the loader, dependency and EXILED files required by the documented layout.

A successful first start creates /.config/EXILED/Configs/ in hosting-panel descriptions. In practice, the leading /.config notation may represent the server account’s configuration mount; verify the panel’s home path and ownership rather than creating a system-wide directory accidentally.
Where plugin configuration belongs
The default EXILED configuration location is:

(ServerPortHere) represents the port used by that server instance. Plugin settings normally appear in these EXILED configuration files rather than in the base game’s config_gameplay.txt. An individual plugin can choose another location, so follow that plugin’s own configuration instructions when they differ.
Start the server once after installing EXILED so the framework can create the configuration tree. Edit YAML carefully: an indentation or syntax error can prevent a plugin from enabling even when its DLL is in the correct directory.
Reload a plugin without a full reboot
EXILED supports the Remote Admin or server-console command reload plugins. This reloads EXILED plugins, including newly added plugins, and is useful after a DLL or configuration change.

Reloading is not a universal substitute for restarting. Dynamic updates depend on the plugin being designed to support reloads. If the plugin documentation requires a reboot, or if the console reports an assembly, hook or state error after reloading, stop and start the server instead.

How to verify that installation worked
Use the server console first
After startup—or after reload plugins—look for EXILED’s plugin-load report in the dedicated-server console or hosting dashboard. A successful report should identify the plugin as loaded. This is stronger evidence than seeing a DLL in the file browser.
Check the expected files and account
- Confirm the DLL is in the platform-appropriate EXILED plugin directory, not the base server directory.
- Confirm the filename ends in
.dlland that the download was not left inside a ZIP file. - On Linux, confirm the server account can read the file and that the path capitalization is exact.
- On Windows, confirm the server process uses the same user profile whose
%AppData%directory you modified. - Check whether EXILED created its
Configsdirectory during startup.
Test the plugin’s behavior
Once the console reports a load, test one documented feature in a controlled session. A loaded assembly can still be disabled by its configuration, blocked by a missing dependency or incompatible with the current game build. Use the plugin’s own startup messages and documentation to distinguish those cases.

The plugin does not appear in the console
- Verify that EXILED itself loaded. A plugin cannot load without the framework and loader.
- Check the path: Windows should use
%AppData%EXILEDPlugins; Linux should use~/.config/EXILED/Pluginsunless the current LabAPI layout explicitly calls for its loader and dependency directories. - Make sure the file is the release DLL, not a source archive or documentation file.
- Restart the server if the plugin was copied while it was running and the plugin does not support dynamic reloads.
- Read the console immediately before and after the load attempt; it commonly identifies a missing dependency, malformed configuration or incompatible assembly.
EXILED itself does not load after a game update
Match the EXILED release to the installed SCP: Secret Laboratory game version. When the game updates first, EXILED may remain incompatible until its maintainers publish a matching build. Check EXILED release notes before updating production servers, and avoid mixing an old loader with files from a newer framework release.
Linux reports permission or file-access errors
Inspect ownership and permissions on the entire path, not only on the DLL. Files copied through an SSH session as root can end up owned by root while the game runs as another account. Move or reassign the files so the server-running account can traverse the directories and read the assemblies. Also check capitalization because Plugins and plugins are different names on Linux.

- Read the plugin’s configuration instructions and confirm it is enabled.
- Look for the plugin’s own dependency requirements and version notes.
- Check whether its settings belong in EXILED’s per-port YAML file rather than
config_gameplay.txt. - Restart instead of reloading if the plugin does not support dynamic updates.
- Confirm that the plugin and EXILED build target the current game version.
Two copies of a plugin cause conflicts
Keep one intended release of a plugin in the load path. When an update instructs you to replace the old DLL, remove the obsolete copy after stopping the server, then install the new release and review any configuration migration notes. Do not delete framework dependencies simply because their names resemble plugin files.
Updating safely after SCP: Secret Laboratory changes
- Back up the server directory, EXILED configuration and plugin configuration.
- Check the game update notes and the EXILED release notes for a compatible framework build.
- Update EXILED and plugins in a maintenance window rather than while players are connected.
- Keep the server stopped while replacing loaders, dependencies or DLLs.
- Start the server and confirm the EXILED plugin-load report before announcing that the update is complete.
- If EXILED has no compatible release yet, leave the production server on the known-good game/framework combination or run the update only in a disposable test instance.
EXILED’s event-based design and separation from the server assembly can lessen the impact of some small updates, but compatibility is still determined by the actual released EXILED build and the game version. Treat every game update as a compatibility check, not as an automatic guarantee.

The best method is the one that matches how the server is operated. Use the automatic installer for a local account with access to the server folder; use manual extraction or SFTP when a panel, container or restricted host requires precise file placement. Do not merge the legacy and LabAPI layouts by guesswork.
