How to Install DDR4 RAM and Check Dual-Channel Memory

Use your motherboard manual to choose the right DDR4 slots, seat each DIMM without forcing it, and confirm detection and channel configuration after installation.

To install DDR4 RAM, shut down and unplug the computer, use the memory slots specified in your exact motherboard manual, align each DIMM’s notch with the slot, and press it straight down until its retaining clip locks. For two modules, the manual identifies the pair that places one DIMM on each memory channel; A2 and B2 are common examples, not a universal rule. Check BIOS to confirm that the modules are detected.

Before installing: check compatibility and slot layout

Confirm that the modules are DDR4 and supported by both your motherboard and CPU. DDR generations use different keying, so a DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 module does not belong in a DDR4 slot. Check the board’s memory support information for capacity and speed limits before buying or installing RAM. ASUS’s memory installation guidance notes that procedures and supported configurations vary by product.

Find the motherboard’s exact model and consult its manual for the recommended slot pattern. Slot labels and colors are board-specific; follow the configuration diagram rather than relying on color or assuming a familiar arrangement. The cited ASUS and MSI examples use A2 and B2 for two modules, but that pair is not guaranteed for every board. See the MSI memory installation guide and the ASUS P11C-M/10G-2T manual for their model-specific diagrams.

Install the DIMMs

  1. Power down and unplug. Shut down the PC and disconnect its power cord before opening the case. Use the motherboard manual to identify the RAM slots.
  2. Open the slot retainers. Release the retaining clip or clips as the socket design requires.
  3. Align the module. Match the DIMM’s off-center notch to the key in the slot. It should fit in only one orientation; if the notch does not line up, do not force the module.
  4. Seat the DIMM vertically. Press straight down, applying pressure at both ends where appropriate. The retaining mechanism should return to its locked position. Inserting at an angle or forcing the wrong orientation can damage the module or socket, as ASUS warns in its installation FAQ.
  5. For two modules, use the manual’s cross-channel pair. Install one DIMM in each of the two slots the board recommends for a pair. On the cited ASUS example board, one module goes in A2 and two go in A2 and B2; the FAQ’s four-module example uses A1, A2, B1, and B2. Verify your own board’s pattern rather than copying those examples.

Choose slots for one, two, or four modules

Configuration Slot guidance What to verify
One DIMM Use the single-module slot named in the motherboard manual. The cited ASUS example uses A2. Check the board’s diagram; the preferred slot can vary by model.
Two DIMMs Use the recommended pair, with one module on each memory channel. A2 and B2 are shown in the cited ASUS and MSI examples. Confirm the exact pair in your manual; A2/B2 is not universal.
Four DIMMs Populate all four slots only if supported by the board. The cited ASUS four-slot example uses A1, A2, B1, and B2. Check supported capacity, module configuration, and platform speed limits.

These slot examples come from the ASUS FAQ, the P11C-M/10G-2T manual, and the MSI guide. Follow the configuration for your own motherboard.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 3200MHz CL16-20-20-38 1.35V Intel XMP AMD EXPO Computer Memory – Black (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16)
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

Confirm detection and dual-channel operation

Start the computer and check the BIOS memory or DRAM status for the installed capacity. If a module is missing, shut down, unplug the system, and reseat it before checking again. Once the system recognizes the modules, use the motherboard manual or firmware’s memory information to confirm their channel configuration where that information is available. MSI’s guide also points to Windows Task Manager for reported memory speed; speed by itself does not confirm dual-channel operation.

Set memory speed only after the system recognizes the RAM

DDR4 modules may provide an XMP profile that can be selected in BIOS, but the option and achievable frequency depend on the RAM, motherboard, and CPU. If you choose to enable a supported profile, save the BIOS setting, reboot, and verify the resulting speed. XMP is not required simply to install the modules or place them across channels; MSI discusses the platform dependencies in its memory guide.

G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 RAM (XMP) 16GB (2x8GB) Up to 3200MT/s* CL16-18-18-38 1.35V Intel AMD Desktop Computer Memory U-DIMM - Black (F4-3200C16D-16GVKB)
  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
  • Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and Intel XMP memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

When adding RAM to existing memory, check compatibility rather than assuming any DDR4 DIMM will run at its advertised speed alongside another. For Intel 600-series motherboards supporting 12th-generation Intel Core processors, Intel says mixing DIMM part numbers may reduce memory speed below the target or prevent booting; that guidance is specific to that platform and applies to DDR4 and DDR5. See Intel’s memory guidance. ASUS’s P11C-M/10G-2T manual also recommends matching CAS latency and suggests using modules from the same vendor for compatibility on that board.

What if the modules have different capacities?

Do not assume unequal capacities behave identically across all systems. The ASUS H110M-A/DP manual describes a configuration in which the capacity matched across channels operates in dual-channel mode while excess capacity on the larger channel operates in single-channel mode. This is specific to that board’s documented behavior, not a guarantee for every platform. Consult the manual for your motherboard: ASUS H110M-A/DP manual.
