What curl is and why Ubuntu’s package is the right starting point
curl is a command-line tool for transferring data with URL syntax. Ubuntu distributes it as an archive package, so APT can obtain the package from the repositories configured for your release and resolve the libraries it needs.

The package is named exactly curl. The normal installation does not require you to choose a curl version manually: Ubuntu’s repositories select the build appropriate for your release and enabled update or security pockets.
Requirements before you install
- An Ubuntu system with access to its configured software repositories.
- A working network connection if the package is not already available in APT’s local cache.
- An account allowed to use
sudo, or access to a root shell. - A terminal on the same machine, container, subsystem, or remote host where you intend to run curl.
APT changes system files, so it asks for administrator authentication. When sudo requests a password, enter the password for your Ubuntu account; the terminal normally does not display the characters as you type.

Install curl step by step

Open a terminal
Use the terminal application on the Ubuntu desktop, or connect to the Ubuntu server, virtual machine, container, subsystem, or remote host that should receive the package.

Refresh APT’s package indexes
sudo apt updateThis downloads current repository metadata. Running it first helps APT select the package available for your release rather than relying on an old local index.

Install the package
sudo apt install curlReview the proposed package changes. Confirm when APT asks for approval. APT resolves curl’s runtime dependencies, including the libcurl runtime and zlib, as part of the transaction.

Verify the command
curl --versionA successful check prints the installed curl version followed by libcurl build information and supported features. Seeing that output confirms that the command is available in the environment where you ran it.

What each command does
sudo apt update
apt update refreshes the local indexes that describe packages in your enabled Ubuntu repositories. It does not install curl by itself. If this step reports repository, DNS, authentication, or connectivity errors, fix those errors before proceeding; an incomplete index refresh can leave APT unable to find or select packages.
sudo apt install curl
apt install requests the package named curl. APT calculates dependencies and proposes any additional packages required by the build available to your Ubuntu release. Accepting the transaction downloads and configures those packages.

The --version option performs a read-only check. It is useful immediately after installation because it confirms both that the executable can be started and which curl/libcurl build is active.
Package versions on different Ubuntu releases
Do not hard-code a curl version in installation instructions or automation unless you have a specific pinning policy. Ubuntu’s package metadata is release-specific, and updates within a release can revise the package in the security or updates pocket.

The version printed by your own curl --version command is the authoritative result for that machine. Differences between two Ubuntu installations are expected when they use different releases, repository pockets, or update dates.
Troubleshooting installation problems
APT says it cannot locate the package
Check the Ubuntu release and repository configuration, confirm that the machine has network connectivity, and make sure sudo apt update completed successfully. A missing or disabled repository, an incorrect release configuration, or stale package indexes can all prevent APT from locating curl.
apt update finishes with errors
Read the error lines rather than continuing directly to installation. Correct the reported network, repository, signing, or configuration problem, then run the update again. The install step should follow a successful metadata refresh so that APT is working from current indexes.
curl --version is still not found
Inspect the output from apt install curl for an error or an aborted transaction. Then verify that you are checking in the same active environment where the package was installed—for example, the same container, subsystem, remote host, or chroot. Installing on one machine does not make the command appear in a different environment.

You cannot use sudo
Installing the system package requires administrator rights. If your account is not authorized to use sudo, ask the system administrator to perform the APT installation or provide an approved root shell. Do not substitute an untrusted binary simply to avoid the authorization step.
The package version is different from an example
That is normally expected. Ubuntu selects versions by release and repository pocket, and security or updates pockets can replace the original release build. Compare the output of curl --version with the package listing for your exact Ubuntu release rather than expecting every system to show the same number.

Removing curl or keeping its configuration
Remove the package but retain configuration files
sudo apt remove curlUse this when you want the executable removed while leaving package configuration files in place for a possible later reinstall.
Remove the package and its configuration files
sudo apt purge curlCanonical’s Ubuntu command-line guidance documents apt purge for removing a package together with its configuration files. Review APT’s proposed changes before confirming, particularly on systems where other packages may share related components.
Ubuntu APT compared with other installation approaches
Because curl is already packaged by Ubuntu, APT is the clearest default for ordinary Ubuntu installations. Manually downloading a binary or building from source can be appropriate for a specialized requirement, but those approaches fall outside the standard repository workflow and require you to manage their provenance, compatibility, dependencies, and update process yourself.

For a normal Ubuntu workstation or server, choosing the repository package avoids unnecessary version pinning and keeps curl aligned with the operating system’s update process.

What is the APT command to install curl?
After refreshing package indexes, install it with sudo apt install curl. The package name is simply curl.
How do I check whether curl is installed?
Run curl --version. Its version and libcurl build output show that the executable is available and identify the active build.
How do I install curl on Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04?
Use the same APT sequence on both releases: update the indexes, install the curl package, and run the version check. Jammy and noble can expose different curl versions because each release has its own package metadata and update stream.
Does installing curl also install libcurl?
