Use a separate, clean server directory and install the platform that matches your gameplay: CraftBukkit or Spigot for Bukkit-compatible plugins, Forge for Forge mods, SpongeForge when you need Forge mods plus Sponge plugins, and SpongeVanilla for a vanilla-based server with Sponge support. All four run Minecraft: Java Edition and depend on a Java runtime compatible with the exact Minecraft release.

Choose the platform before downloading anything
The right installation is determined by the software your players need, not by a universal performance ranking. Bukkit-compatible plugins, Forge mods and Sponge plugins belong to different ecosystems and are not interchangeable.

Spigot’s own documentation describes it as “a fork of CraftBukkit with extra optimizations and more features sprinkled on top.” Choose Spigot when its plugin ecosystem and configuration options fit your server; choose CraftBukkit only when you specifically need that implementation.

Prepare Java and an isolated server directory
Match Java to the complete software stack
Install a 64-bit Java runtime or JDK supported by your exact Minecraft and platform release. The Java requirement is not determined by the word “Minecraft” alone: a current Forge setup may require a 64-bit Java 21 JDK/JVM, while older Minecraft and Forge combinations require older Java versions. Sponge compatibility varies in the same way. For example, Sponge’s published compatibility entries include SpongeAPI 7.x with Minecraft 1.12.2 and minimum Java 8, SpongeAPI 8.x with Minecraft 1.16.5 and Java 8, and SpongeAPI 9.x with Minecraft 1.18 and Java 17. These are release compatibility entries, not recommendations to run every version on Java 8 or 17.
Check the release-specific platform documentation before installing Java. Confirm the active runtime from a terminal:

A 64-bit JVM is important for servers that need more than the memory limits of a 32-bit process.
Create a clean directory
Create a new directory dedicated to this server, such as minecraft-server. Do not mix BuildTools files, installer downloads, old worlds or another server’s plugins into it. Keep backups outside the live directory so deleting or replacing the server cannot remove every copy of a world.
- Use a path you can easily find and protect with normal file permissions.
- Keep a written record of the Minecraft version, Java version and platform build.
- Make a clean copy before adding mods, plugins or configuration changes.
- Run the server from its own directory so generated files are written where you expect.
Run the vanilla server once
Even when you plan to use Forge, Spigot or Sponge, a vanilla baseline helps verify Java and creates the files that the later setup needs.
- Download the official Minecraft: Java Edition server JAR for the target Minecraft release.
- Place the JAR in the new server directory.
- Open a terminal in that directory and run the JAR. Replace the filename with the one you downloaded:
java -Xms1G -Xmx2G -jar server.jar nogui - Allow the first run to create files, then stop the process if it does not stop by itself.
- Open
eula.txt, read the license and change the setting toeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Start the server again and confirm that it reaches a ready state and creates the world and configuration files.
The first launch stopping after generating files is normal. It is usually waiting for the EULA decision rather than indicating a broken installation. The EULA file must be edited in the directory from which that server launch generated it.

Install CraftBukkit or Spigot with BuildTools
Why BuildTools matters
CraftBukkit and Spigot should be produced through the official BuildTools process rather than downloaded as arbitrary JAR files. Spigot explicitly warns: “you should NOT download any Spigot jar files found on Internet. It may be outdated, or can be a trojan sometimes.” Treat an unverified prebuilt JAR as both a security risk and a version-management problem.
Build the selected release
- Make a separate directory for BuildTools. Keep it outside the live server directory.
- Obtain BuildTools through the official Spigot project distribution and documentation.
- Open a terminal in the BuildTools directory.
- Run BuildTools with the Minecraft release you intend to operate. The release-specific command supplied by Spigot documentation is the authority for the version you choose.
- Wait for the build to finish. The generated output will include the server JAR for the selected implementation and release.
- Copy the generated Spigot or CraftBukkit JAR into the clean server directory. Do not copy the whole BuildTools workspace into production.
Build output names can vary by release. Rename the copied file to a simple name such as spigot.jar or craftbukkit.jar only if your startup command uses that exact name.
Start and configure Spigot
From the server directory, use a release-appropriate command such as:
java -Xms1G -Xmx2G -jar spigot.jar nogui-Xms1G sets the initial heap and -Xmx2G sets the maximum heap in this example; adjust both to the machine, player load and release. Do not copy these values blindly to a constrained host. Replace spigot.jar with the actual filename.
On the first Spigot launch, review the EULA requirement and then inspect the generated files. Spigot creates files such as server.properties, bukkit.yml and spigot.yml. Stop the server cleanly before editing them, make one change at a time, and retain a backup of the working configuration.
CraftBukkit-specific considerations
CraftBukkit is built through the same BuildTools family, so the authenticity rule is the same: use official build instructions and keep the resulting JAR tied to the Minecraft release for which it was built. A plugin compiled for a different Bukkit API or Minecraft version may fail during startup even if the JAR itself launches.

Install a Forge server
Choose the matching installer
Download the Forge installer that matches the Minecraft version you will run. Forge’s current setup documentation lists “An installation of the Java 21 Development Kit (JDK) and 64-bit Java Virtual Machine (JVM)” as a prerequisite and recommends using the latest Forge version where possible. That requirement is version-sensitive: older Minecraft and Forge combinations can require older Java, so verify the requirement for your selected release rather than assuming Java 21 works everywhere.
Install into an empty directory
- Create a new, empty Forge server directory. Do not point the installer at a directory containing another platform’s files.
- Run the Forge installer and choose the server-installation option.
- Set the installation path to the empty directory and let the installer download or generate the required libraries and launcher files.
- Open the resulting directory and identify the generated server launcher or startup script.
- Run that launcher from the Forge directory. The first run can stop after generating files; this is expected while the server prepares its environment.
- Open the generated
eula.txt, read the license and seteula=trueonly if you accept it. - Start the Forge launcher again, adding memory flags appropriate to the release and machine.
Forge’s EULA file belongs in the run directory created by the server installation. Editing an unrelated eula.txt elsewhere will not satisfy the launcher.
Add Forge mods safely
Place only mods that match the server’s Minecraft and Forge versions in the server’s mods directory. A mod built for another Minecraft release, another Forge branch or a different mod loader can stop startup before the server console becomes usable.
- Keep a clean copy of the Forge directory before adding the first mod.
- Add mods in small groups so a failure can be traced to the most recent change.
- Read each mod’s dependency and server-side requirements.
- Keep client installations aligned with any mods that must be present on both sides.
Install Sponge: choose SpongeForge or SpongeVanilla
Sponge’s quick-start documentation defines two different implementations. “SpongeForge – a mod for Forge that allows you to use Sponge plugins with Forge mods” is the choice for a Forge-based modpack. “SpongeVanilla – a server jar that adds Sponge support directly into vanilla Minecraft” is the choice for a vanilla-based server that needs Sponge’s API and plugin system.
SpongeForge with Forge mods
- Install and test the compatible Forge server first, using the Forge procedure above.
- Check that the SpongeForge build matches the Minecraft and Forge versions of that server.
- Download the matching SpongeForge file from Sponge’s official distribution.
- Place the SpongeForge file in the Forge server’s
modsdirectory alongside other Forge mods. - Start the Forge launcher and watch the console for Sponge initialization errors before adding plugins.
- After the base server works, add Sponge plugins that support the SpongeAPI version provided by that SpongeForge build.
SpongeForge is not a replacement for Forge: it is a Forge mod, so the Forge installation, Forge Java requirement and Forge mod compatibility rules still apply.
SpongeVanilla
- Select a SpongeVanilla build for the exact Minecraft release.
- Place its server JAR in a dedicated, otherwise clean directory.
- Launch it from that directory with the Java version required by the Sponge and Minecraft combination.
- Complete the first-run EULA step in the generated
eula.txt. - Restart the SpongeVanilla server and verify that it reaches a ready state before installing plugins.
SpongeVanilla can be easier to update and set up than combining Forge with SpongeForge when you do not need Forge mods. It does not provide Forge’s mod loader, so choosing it means giving up mods that require Forge.

Put Sponge plugins in the correct directory
Plugin placement depends on SpongeAPI generation:
- SpongeAPI 8 and later: place compatible plugin files in
plugins. - SpongeAPI 7 and earlier: place compatible plugin files in
mods.
Restart after adding plugins and read every plugin’s compatibility notes. A plugin for SpongeAPI 7 is not made compatible with SpongeAPI 8 merely by moving it to a different folder.

Use a repeatable startup script
Put the command that actually works into a script so restarts use the same JAR, directory and Java executable every time. A generic example is:
java -Xms1G -Xmx2G -jar platform-server.jar noguiFor Forge, use the generated launcher or script rather than substituting a vanilla JAR. For Spigot or CraftBukkit, use the JAR produced by BuildTools. For SpongeVanilla, use the selected SpongeVanilla JAR. Keep memory values and filenames explicit in the script and document why you changed them.
Stop cleanly and back up
Use the server console’s stop command before replacing files or copying a world. Back up the world, platform configuration and plugin or mod configuration on a schedule. Store at least one backup outside the live server directory and periodically test that it can be restored.
Network access for outside players
Players on the same local network may connect without router port forwarding, but players outside it normally require the host firewall and router to allow the server traffic. Mojang’s Java server setup guidance identifies port 25565 as the default Java Edition port. If you changed server-port in server.properties, forward the port you actually configured. Open only the required port, restrict firewall rules to the intended protocol and verify the host’s local address before creating a forwarding rule.
Run the process under a dedicated operating-system account where practical. This limits the damage from a compromised plugin or mod and prevents the server from running with unnecessary administrative privileges.
Common first-launch failures and fixes
The server stops immediately after the first run
- Open
eula.txtin the directory used by the launcher. - Read the license and set
eula=trueonly if you agree. - Start the same launcher again from the same directory.
If the file is regenerated or the launcher still reports an EULA problem, you are probably editing a different directory’s file or launching with a different working directory.

Check java -version and compare it with the exact Minecraft, Forge or Sponge compatibility requirement. Install the required 64-bit Java release, correct PATH ordering, or call the intended Java executable by its full path. Do not solve a version mismatch by randomly downgrading a current server: the platform’s release documentation determines the supported combination.
A Forge or Sponge server cannot load a mod or plugin
- Confirm the Minecraft version first.
- Confirm the Forge version or SpongeAPI generation next.
- Check whether the file belongs in
modsorplugins. - Read the console for a missing dependency, then remove the newest addition from the clean backup and retest.
For Sponge, remember that SpongeAPI 7-and-earlier plugins use mods, while SpongeAPI 8-and-later plugins use plugins.
Spigot or CraftBukkit will not start after replacing the JAR
Ensure the JAR was built for the same Minecraft release as the world and plugins. Rebuild with the official BuildTools process instead of downloading an unknown replacement. Restore the previous working JAR and configuration if the new build changes behavior, then test the update on a copy of the world.
Players can connect locally but not over the internet
- Confirm the server is listening on the intended port in
server.properties. - Allow that port through the host firewall.
- Forward the same port from the router to the server’s local IP address.
- Test from a network outside the host’s LAN; testing from inside can give misleading results on routers without hairpin support.
Updating and migrating without losing a world
- Stop the server cleanly and make a complete backup.
- Record the current Minecraft version, Java version, platform build, mods, plugins and configuration files.
- Copy the world and configuration to a separate test directory.
- Install the new platform or build in a new directory rather than overwriting the only working copy.
- Start the test server, review every console warning and verify player data, worlds, commands and plugins or mods.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule a maintenance window and migrate the live world.
- Keep the old directory untouched until players have confirmed that the updated server works.
Major Minecraft updates can require new Forge mods, new Sponge builds or rebuilt Bukkit plugins. Treat an update as a compatibility project, not merely a file replacement.
