The most common installation failure is using a valid Cloth Config file for the wrong loader or Minecraft version. Fabric, Quilt, Forge, and NeoForge builds are not interchangeable, and a launcher may silently skip an incompatible jar before the dependent mod reports Cloth Config as missing.

A configuration-screen library
Cloth Config API is not a world-generation mod, item pack, shader, performance tool, or standalone feature that changes gameplay. The Cloth Config project describes it as “A library that draws the in-game settings screens other mods use.” CurseForge labels the project “Config Screen API for Minecraft.” A mod developer can use the library to create a settings menu instead of implementing every screen and control from scratch.
Because it is a library, you normally have no reason to install it until another mod requires it. Adding it will not create a new menu or content by itself. Its purpose becomes visible when a dependent mod opens a configuration screen or when the loader checks that the library is present during startup.

Why the exact file matters
Every release is built for a particular Minecraft version and loader family. A jar can be genuine, current, and downloaded from a reputable project page yet still be unusable in your profile. The loader can reject a wrong-loader artifact during discovery, leaving the dependent mod to report that Cloth Config is missing. Treat the Minecraft version, loader, dependent mod’s version range, and required companion APIs as one compatibility set.
Choose the correct Cloth Config build
Start with the profile you actually intend to play. In your launcher, record the Minecraft version and whether the profile uses Fabric, Quilt, Forge, or NeoForge. Then use the Cloth Config download table or a project page on Modrinth or CurseForge and filter by both values. Do not choose a file by its position at the top of a page or by download count; release lists change frequently.

The project’s current release rows and publication dates change over time. On 15 October 2026, the authoritative choice is still the row that explicitly matches your installed Minecraft version and loader, not an older filename copied from a tutorial.

Check your profile before downloading
- Minecraft version: Write down the exact number, including a minor version such as 1.x.y when shown by the launcher.
- Loader: Confirm whether the profile starts Fabric, Quilt, Forge, or NeoForge. Two profiles can use the same Minecraft version while requiring different jars.
- Dependent mod requirement: Read the mod’s dependency text for a minimum, maximum, or version range for Cloth Config. A release that loads on one mod version may be rejected by another.
- Instance location: Identify the game directory used by this profile. The default launcher can share one
modsfolder across profiles, so do not assume that the folder you opened belongs to the profile you are launching. - Existing files: Look for older files whose names contain
cloth-configorcloth-api. Keeping several generations in one folder can create duplicate or conflicting dependency resolutions.
Install Cloth Config API step by step
- Open the profile settings. In your launcher, select the modded profile and confirm its Minecraft version and loader. If the launcher offers an “Open folder” or instance-directory command, use it to identify the directory tied to that profile.
- Open an authoritative download page. Use the official Cloth Config project table or its established Modrinth or CurseForge project page. Filter the files by the exact Minecraft version and loader recorded in step 1.
- Select the matching jar. Fabric profiles use the Fabric artifact. Quilt profiles use the Fabric artifact identified by the project. Forge and NeoForge profiles use their respective loader-specific artifacts. Check the release notes or dependency metadata when the page lists more than one file for the same Minecraft version.
- Check the dependent mod’s version range. If the mod says it needs Cloth Config at or above a particular release, or within a bounded range, choose a file that falls inside that range. A file can match Minecraft and still fail this second check.
- Install the loader API where required. For Fabric, add Fabric API built for the same Minecraft version. For Quilt, add Quilted Fabric API built for that version. Forge and NeoForge do not require an additional Cloth Config library beyond their matching Cloth Config artifact, although individual mods can have other dependencies.
- Close Minecraft and place the jars. Put Cloth Config, the required Fabric or Quilted Fabric API, and the dependent mod in the active profile’s
modsfolder. Keep the files as downloaded; do not unzip a jar or place it in a resource-pack, shader, or saves directory. - Remove stale duplicates. Delete or move older
cloth-configandcloth-apijars from that same folder. Also remove a second copy of the library accidentally left by a previous installation. Keep a backup elsewhere if you need to roll back, but do not leave both versions active. - Launch the same profile. Start Minecraft with the loader you checked in step 1. Watch the loading screen and log for dependency errors. If the dependent mod reaches the title screen, open its normal settings entry to confirm that its configuration screen appears.
Loader-specific notes
Fabric
Fabric requires two separate pieces in the common setup: the Fabric build of Cloth Config and Fabric API for the same Minecraft version. Fabric API is not a replacement for Cloth Config; it is the loader’s broader API library. If either jar targets another Minecraft version, the profile can fail before the dependent mod starts. Keep both files in the same instance directory as the mod that requests Cloth Config.
Quilt
For Quilt, the project directs users to the Fabric artifact of Cloth Config rather than a separate Quilt-named jar. That does not mean every Fabric mod is automatically compatible with every Quilt release. Match the Quilt profile’s Minecraft version, install Quilted Fabric API for that version, and follow any compatibility limits stated by the dependent mod.
Forge
Choose the Forge-specific Cloth Config file for your Minecraft version. Do not copy a Fabric jar into a Forge profile because the file extension alone does not describe loader compatibility. Forge profiles use their own dependency metadata and will reject an artifact built for another loader.

NeoForge
Choose the NeoForge-specific build, even when the Minecraft version number looks the same as a Forge release. NeoForge and Forge are separate loader targets. A NeoForge profile should contain the NeoForge artifact named by the project and the other dependencies required by your modpack.
How to verify that it loaded
- Reach the title screen: A successful dependency check normally lets the profile continue past the loader’s mod-discovery phase.
- Check the mod list: Open the loader’s mod list if your profile exposes one and look for Cloth Config and the dependent mod. The displayed version should correspond to the jar you selected.
- Open the dependent mod’s settings: Use the mod’s documented configuration button or in-game menu. Cloth Config often supplies the screen rather than a separate top-level button.
- Read the log when uncertain: Search the latest log for
cloth-config,cloth-api, or the dependent mod’s identifier. A resolved dependency entry is stronger evidence than seeing a jar in the folder.
Troubleshoot a “Missing Cloth Config” message
The jar is for the wrong loader
This is the most frequent cause when a file appears correctly named but the loader behaves as if it is absent. Replace a Fabric file in Forge or NeoForge, or a Forge file in Fabric, with the artifact built for the active loader. The project notes that wrong-loader builds can be skipped during discovery; the later error therefore names Cloth Config as missing even though a file is physically present.
The Minecraft version does not match
Check the profile and the release row character by character. A file for one Minecraft version is not made compatible by renaming it. Download a build for the upgraded version, then update the matching loader and API components. Fabric’s documentation cautions that a mod working on one Minecraft version may not work on another, so retest the complete set after an upgrade.

The dependent mod’s version range excludes your file
Read the dependency declaration in the error screen or mod page. If it requests a minimum version, install a release at or above that minimum. If it specifies an upper bound, a newer release can be rejected even though it supports the same Minecraft version. Select a release inside the stated range rather than forcing the loader to ignore the check.
The jar is in a different instance
Launchers can maintain several profiles and, in some configurations, share a default game directory. Verify the active profile’s instance path and place every required jar there. A correct file in another profile’s mods folder is invisible to the game you started.
Two copies conflict
Search the active folder for every file beginning with or containing cloth-config or cloth-api. Move older copies out, leave one compatible release, and launch again. Duplicate versions can produce a duplicate-mod error, an unsatisfied range, or unpredictable selection by the loader.
Fabric API or Quilted Fabric API is missing
On Fabric, install Fabric API for the exact Minecraft version. On Quilt, install Quilted Fabric API for that version. Cloth Config itself does not replace those loader APIs. If the error changes from “missing Cloth Config” to a missing API module after you correct the jar, resolve the newly named dependency in the same instance folder.

The profile uses a newer Minecraft version than the mod supports
Updating Minecraft can invalidate several dependencies at once. Download a Cloth Config release for the new version, update the loader and the appropriate API, and confirm that the dependent mod has a release supporting that version. If no compatible release exists, the practical fix is to run the mod on the Minecraft version it supports rather than mixing files from different versions.
The file was altered or unpacked
Keep the downloaded file as a jar. Do not extract its contents, append another extension, or place it inside a nested folder unless your launcher explicitly defines that layout. If the loader cannot read the file, download a fresh copy from the official project table or an established Modrinth or CurseForge project page.
Keep separate profiles isolated
A clean directory per modded profile prevents a Fabric library from being discovered by a Forge or NeoForge profile and avoids accidental cross-version loading. When your launcher supports per-profile game directories, enable that option before adding mods. Otherwise, maintain a clear inventory and remove files that do not belong to the profile you are about to launch. Isolation is especially important when two profiles use the same Minecraft version but different loaders, because their filenames can look deceptively similar.
Updating after a Minecraft release
- Record the new Minecraft version and loader version shown by the launcher.
- Check whether the dependent mod has a release for that combination.
- Choose the Cloth Config row for the new Minecraft version and the same loader.
- Update Fabric API or Quilted Fabric API when the profile uses Fabric or Quilt.
- Remove the old Cloth Config jar before adding the new one.
- Launch once with only the required set, then add optional mods back if the profile starts normally.
Do not infer compatibility from a similar-looking filename or from a release date alone. Project pages publish new rows and update dates frequently; the version and loader fields are the decisive information.

What to remember
Install Cloth Config only because another mod needs it, and treat it as a loader- and version-specific dependency. The reliable sequence is to identify the active profile, filter the official download table by Minecraft version and loader, add the matching companion API for Fabric or Quilt, place the jars in that profile’s mods folder, remove stale duplicates, and verify the dependent mod in-game. If Minecraft still says Cloth Config is missing, check loader first, then Minecraft version, dependency range, instance directory, duplicate jars, and the required loader API in that order.
