Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen a smart home device stops connecting, syncing, streaming, pairing, or responding after you changed Pi-hole blocking, do not start by allowlisting the entire vendor domain. First prove that the device is using Pi-hole, reproduce the failed function, and inspect Pi-hole’s query log for a blocked lookup from that client at that time. Then test one exact, evidence-backed domain exception, retry the same function, and remove the exception if it changes nothing.
There is no device-independent list of domains that every smart speaker, television, camera, appliance, or hub needs. The correct exception depends on the manufacturer, model, firmware, feature that failed, and the actual query that Pi-hole blocked. If the device’s request never appears in Pi-hole, changing an allowlist cannot fix it; check for DNS bypass or a non-DNS fault instead.

Start with the smallest safe diagnosis
A domain block can break one cloud feature while leaving local controls working. A television may still open its settings but fail to load streaming catalogs; a camera may record locally but stop sending notifications; an appliance may respond over its local protocol but fail account synchronization. Treat the timing of the failure as a clue, not proof. Other causes include a device losing Wi-Fi, an expired account session, a firmware problem, a vendor outage, or a pairing process that never reaches DNS.

Use this order:
- Confirm the affected client is actually sending DNS queries to Pi-hole.
- Trigger the precise operation that fails.
- Filter the Pi-hole query log to that client and the short failure window.
- Record blocked domains and the rule or list that blocked each one.
- Allowlist only the exact domain that plausibly serves the failed operation.
- Retry the same operation, then keep or remove the exception based on the result.
Ask for the device make and model, firmware version, affected function, network segment, and a redacted query-log excerpt before suggesting any supposedly universal domain list. Without those details, a list is guesswork and can undo the privacy goal that led you to Pi-hole.

Confirm Pi-hole is in the device’s DNS path
Check the client and router settings
Pi-hole can only show and block DNS traffic that reaches it. Check the device’s network details, the DHCP settings on the router, and any manually configured DNS addresses. A client may have received Pi-hole as its resolver from DHCP, while another client has a static public resolver configured. Guest networks, VLANs, mesh nodes, and secondary routers can also use a different DNS service.
In Pi-hole’s web interface, identify the client by its current IP address or hostname. Device names can change when a client uses randomized addressing or a new DHCP lease, so confirm the identity with the router as well. If you cannot identify the client reliably, do not make a rule change yet; you could exempt the wrong traffic.
Reproduce one failure while watching Query Log
Open Pi-hole’s real-time Query Log, note the current time, and perform one operation that consistently fails. For example, start a single playback session, press the device’s sync button once, or repeat the pairing step. Avoid running several features at once. A narrow time window makes it easier to associate a lookup with the symptom and avoids mistaking routine telemetry for the request that matters.
Pi-hole documents real-time query logging as a debugging aid. Its domain-query function can also check whether a name is covered by an exact allowlist entry, denylist entry, wildcard rule, regular expression, or subscribed list. Use that function on a candidate name before changing it, and record the blocking source shown by your installed interface.
Find the blocked lookup that matches the failed feature
Filter by client, time, and status
In Query Log, filter to the affected client and the seconds or minutes around the test. Look for queries marked blocked, denied, or otherwise refused. Record the complete queried name, not just the parent domain. A hostname such as api.example.net can have a different purpose from images.example.net or login.example.net, and allowing the parent domain would cover all of them.

Correlate several attempts. A candidate is stronger when it appears immediately before each failed action and is absent, or handled differently, when the action succeeds. One isolated blocked lookup may be background traffic unrelated to the symptom. Do not infer that a tracker, analytics host, or generic content-delivery name is required merely because it was queried at the same time.
Inspect why Pi-hole blocked it
Open the rule information associated with the blocked result. Determine whether the match came from an exact deny entry, a subscribed denylist, a wildcard, or a regular-expression rule. Note the list or rule name. This tells you what must be changed and makes the change reversible.
Recommended Free Tools
Pi-hole’s documented rule precedence is:
| Priority | Rule type | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exact allowlist | A specific allowed name can override a matching deny rule. |
| 2 | Regex allowlist | An allow pattern is evaluated before deny patterns. |
| 3 | Exact denylist | A direct blocked name is considered after allow rules. |
| 4 | Subscribed allowlists | Allow entries from subscribed sources are considered here. |
| 5 | Subscribed denylists | List-based blocking is evaluated after the allow sources. |
| 6 | Regex denylist | A matching deny pattern is last in this documented order. |
Pi-hole’s official Regex Blocking documentation, dated July 17, 2025, states: “Allowlisting always has priority over denylisting.” That priority does not make a broad exception safe; it only explains why a narrowly matched allow entry can override a block.
Make one narrow exception and test it
Choose the narrowest name supported by evidence
If the blocked query plausibly belongs to the failed operation, add that exact fully qualified domain name to Pi-hole’s allowlist using the interface documented for your version. Do not begin with a wildcard such as *.vendor.example, a regular expression covering every subdomain, or an entire top-level vendor family. Those patterns may permit unrelated advertising, telemetry, update, or tracking endpoints.
Keep a change note containing the date, client, feature tested, domain, and blocking source. If you administer more than one Pi-hole instance, make the change on the resolver that actually answered the client’s query. A successful DNS response from a different resolver does not prove that the Pi-hole exception is being used.

Retry exactly what failed
Repeat the same operation under the same network conditions. If pairing failed, repeat pairing; if a stream failed, start the same stream; if synchronization failed, request a new synchronization. A general sign-in test is not a substitute because it may use a different endpoint. Check whether the feature completes and whether a new blocked query appears.
- It works and the newly allowed name is relevant: keep the exact exception, monitor the feature through a normal restart, and document why it exists.
- It still fails and the same name is blocked elsewhere: inspect the other matching rule or resolver and repeat the evidence check before making another change.
- It still fails and the name was not needed: remove the exception immediately and continue with other possible causes.
- Several names are blocked during one operation: test them one at a time, beginning with the name whose timing and purpose most directly match the failure.
Removing an unhelpful exception matters. An allowlist that did not restore the feature weakens your blocking policy without providing a benefit, and it can hide the real cause during later troubleshooting.
What to do when no matching query appears
Check for DNS bypass
An empty Pi-hole result is evidence that the request may not have traversed Pi-hole; it is not proof that the device is functioning correctly or that the vendor domain is safe to allow. Recheck the client’s resolver settings, the router’s DHCP advertisement, secondary access points, and any guest or IoT network. Confirm with a fresh test while watching Pi-hole.
Some smart-home devices have used hard-coded public DNS servers instead of the resolver supplied by the home gateway. A 2020 study by M. Hammad Mazhar and Zubair Shafiq observed this behavior in more than 200 homes in a U.S. metropolitan area. The paper, dated March 31, 2020, included 1,237 devices across 66 types. Its results describe that sample and are not a current guarantee about any particular model.
| Observation in the 2020 study | Qualification |
|---|---|
| 98% of smart assistants accessed Google DNS servers. | Study observation from its sampled homes and devices; not a present-day rate for all assistants. |
| 72% of smart TVs used hard-coded Google DNS. | Historical sample result; it does not establish that a reader’s television bypasses Pi-hole. |
| 20% of traffic for smart assistants, smart TVs, and health or wearable devices used HTTP. | Traffic characteristic reported by the paper, not evidence that a blocked DNS request is a tracker or that HTTP is used by a current model. |
| 5.9% of smart-TV hostnames, 3.1% of game-console hostnames, and 2.9% of smart-assistant hostnames were associated with known advertising or tracking services. | Associations in the paper’s hostname analysis; these percentages cannot identify the purpose of a blocked hostname in your network. |
If a device is confirmed to use another resolver, an allowlist edit in Pi-hole will not affect that request. Correct the DNS path only if it fits your network design and privacy policy. Some administrators enforce DNS through router policies or firewall rules; per-device DNS policy on a router is an optional network-management approach, not a required Pi-hole fix. Verify the feature and implications of any equipment before purchasing or deploying it.

Consider non-DNS causes
When the failed action produces no relevant query and the device demonstrably uses Pi-hole, test basic connectivity to the local network, confirm the device’s clock and account state, check available firmware updates, and look for a service outage or changed vendor requirements. Pairing can also fail because the phone and device are on different client-isolation or VLAN policies. These checks are separate from allowlisting; do not keep adding domains to compensate for a problem that never reaches DNS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the failure pattern to choose the next test
| Observed pattern | Most useful next action | Change to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| One exact domain is blocked immediately before one cloud feature fails. | Test an exact allow entry for that name, then retry the same feature. | Allowing every subdomain of the vendor. |
| Several unrelated domains are blocked during the operation. | Identify which query is repeated at the failure point and test one at a time. | Disabling the entire denylist. |
| The device appears in Pi-hole for routine traffic but not during the failed action. | Check whether that feature uses another resolver, a cached connection, or a non-DNS local path. | Assuming the first visible hostname is the required endpoint. |
| No device traffic appears in Pi-hole at all. | Verify DHCP, static DNS, VLAN, guest-network, and secondary-router settings. | Adding vendor domains to Pi-hole before fixing the DNS path. |
| The exact exception changes nothing. | Remove it and investigate connectivity, credentials, firmware, pairing, or service status. | Leaving a broad exception in place “just in case.” |
Keep the privacy cost of troubleshooting under control
DNS logs can reveal the domains a household visits, device names, local IP addresses, and patterns of behavior. Pi-hole’s official security guidance warns that its DNS log may expose browsing history and network identifiers and advises against sending the complete pihole.log to third parties.
When asking for help, share only the lines needed to explain the failure. Redact device names, local and public IP addresses, account identifiers, unrelated hostnames, timestamps that reveal household routines, and query parameters. Preserve enough timing to show that the candidate query occurred during the failed action, but do not publish your household’s full DNS history. If a support person needs the blocking source, include the rule or list name after removing identifying details.
Maintain the fix after the device recovers
Document and review the exception
Record why the exact domain was allowed, which feature required it, and which rule blocked it. Review the entry after firmware updates or changes to the device’s cloud account. A vendor can move a function to a new hostname; conversely, an old exception may become unnecessary. Remove stale entries rather than accumulating permanent access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Watch for scope expansion
An exact allow entry can be safe for the diagnosed function while a wildcard or regex can silently exempt many services. Periodically inspect allowlist patterns for broad parent domains, overlapping regular expressions, and entries added during emergency troubleshooting. Keep exceptions as specific as the evidence allows.
Best Value
Re-test after list updates
Subscribed denylists change over time. If a previously working feature breaks after a list update, repeat the same query-log procedure instead of copying an old domain list from a forum. The blocking source may have changed, and the device may now use a different endpoint. Current manufacturer documentation for the exact model and firmware can help interpret a hostname, but it should be checked against what your Pi-hole actually recorded.
Which domains should you allowlist in Pi-hole?
Allowlist the exact domain that Pi-hole blocked during the specific failed function, and only after the query timing and client identity make the connection plausible. No universal smart-home allowlist is established here. Manufacturer, model, firmware, feature, region, and cloud architecture all affect the required names. A list that fixes one product can unnecessarily permit unrelated traffic for another.
If you need an exact recommendation for a particular device, collect its make and model, firmware version, the failed function, the network it uses, and a redacted Pi-hole query excerpt from a reproduction attempt. Those details support a targeted decision; a vendor name alone does not.
When a router-level policy is worth considering
Most incidents need only Pi-hole query inspection and one narrow rule change. A router with per-device DNS policies can be useful when you intentionally want different resolver treatment for an IoT network, a guest network, or a single legacy device. It is an optional architecture choice, not a replacement for identifying the blocked lookup. Evaluate whether the policy still sends the device through a resolver you trust, whether it preserves logging and blocking goals, and whether it prevents unintended DNS bypass.
No new hardware is required to perform this diagnosis when Pi-hole is already installed and operating. A replacement computer, router, cable, or repair utility does not identify the blocked domain or edit the Pi-hole rule that caused the symptom.
