To install Cardboard, start with a working Fabric server, then place the matching Cardboard, Fabric API, and iCommonLib JAR files in the server’s mods/ folder. Launch the server once so Cardboard creates plugins/, stop it, add compatible Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper plugin JARs there, and start the server again. Cardboard is still in development, so plugin compatibility must be checked and tested rather than assumed.

What Cardboard does
Cardboard is a Fabric mod that implements the Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper modding API on FabricMC. It gives a Fabric server a compatibility layer through which some plugins written for those server ecosystems can run. It does not turn every plugin into a Fabric mod, and it does not guarantee that a plugin built for one Minecraft or API version will work on another.

The practical result is a two-part server: Fabric and its normal mods remain in mods/, while Cardboard loads supported Bukkit-style plugins from plugins/. Keeping those locations separate is essential. Putting a plugin JAR in mods/, or putting a Fabric mod in plugins/, will not install it correctly.
Check compatibility before downloading anything
Use a Fabric server first
Cardboard is not a standalone server executable. Install or create a Fabric server before adding Cardboard. Fabric’s official server launcher is an executable JAR that can download missing Fabric Loader and Minecraft files during setup. For Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer, Fabric’s guide recommends Java 21. Use the Java version required by the Minecraft release and by your other server software; an incorrect Java runtime can stop the server before Cardboard is even loaded.

Match the Minecraft and Cardboard branches
Choose the Cardboard branch that targets the exact Minecraft version used by the server. The project’s support chart changes as branches are developed: some current branches have active support, some have limited support, and the current chart lists no support for versions at or below 1.20. Check that chart immediately before downloading, because support status is not permanent.
Matching only the major release is not enough. Confirm the Minecraft version, Fabric Loader expectations, Cardboard branch, Fabric API build, iCommonLib build, and each plugin’s supported Minecraft and Bukkit/Paper API versions. A plugin that loads on one supported combination can fail on another.

Prepare a backup and a test copy
Stop the production server and make a complete copy of the server directory before changing JAR files. Include the world folders, configuration files, mods/, and any existing plugins/ directory. A separate test copy lets you remove or replace a plugin without risking the live world. Cardboard’s documentation explicitly warns that it is still in development and that compatibility with every mod or plugin is unknown, so a rollback path is part of a safe installation.

The names above describe file roles, not a license to mix arbitrary versions. Download each JAR for the same Minecraft and loader combination whenever the project provides version-specific builds.
Install Cardboard on a self-hosted Fabric server
These steps assume you can access the server’s files directly and can start and stop its Fabric launcher.
- Stop the server cleanly. Do not replace JARs while the server is running. Wait until the console confirms that shutdown has completed, then make or verify your backup.
- Open the server’s root directory. This is the directory containing the Fabric launcher, world folders, configuration files, and usually
mods/. Ifmods/does not exist, create a folder with that exact name in the server root. - Download matching dependencies. Obtain the Cardboard JAR for the server’s Minecraft branch, plus the matching Fabric API and iCommonLib JARs. Do not substitute a build for a different Minecraft release merely because its filename looks similar.
- Place the three required JARs in
mods/. The Cardboard, Fabric API, and iCommonLib files all belong directly in that folder, not in a nested subfolder. Leave unrelated plugin files out ofmods/. - Start the Fabric server once. Cardboard should initialize and create a
plugins/folder in the server directory. The first launch may also generate configuration files. Watch the console from the beginning of startup instead of checking only whether the process remains open. - Stop the server again. Wait for a clean shutdown before adding plugins. This second stop ensures the generated directory and configuration files are written safely.
- Open the new
plugins/folder. It should be alongsidemods/in the server root. If it was not created, review the first startup log for a Cardboard loading error before continuing. - Add one compatible plugin first. Copy the Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper plugin JAR into
plugins/. Keep the JAR directly in that folder and do not unpack it unless the plugin’s own documentation specifically requires another format. - Start the server and inspect the console. Confirm that Fabric loads Cardboard, Cardboard discovers the plugin, and no dependency, version, or initialization error appears. Test the plugin’s actual commands or features in a safe world before adding another plugin.
Install Cardboard through a managed hosting panel
Managed hosts use a browser file manager instead of a local server directory. The labels differ between providers, but the documented workflow is consistent.

- Stop the server from the hosting panel and wait for its status to show that it is offline.
- Open the panel’s Files, File Manager, or similarly named area.
- Open the server’s
modsdirectory. If the panel provides a Fabric installation tool, verify the selected Minecraft and Fabric versions before uploading files. - Upload the matching Cardboard, Fabric API, and iCommonLib JARs. Upload the files themselves, not a ZIP archive containing them, unless the panel explicitly extracts archives.
- Start the server once and watch the live console. Cardboard should create a
pluginsdirectory in the server root. - Stop the server, open
plugins, and upload the compatible Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper plugin JARs. - Start the server again and use the console and in-game tests to verify loading. If the panel offers scheduled backups or snapshots, create one before changing versions.
A hosting panel can simplify file access, but it does not remove version-matching or compatibility requirements. Panel buttons may have different names, and some hosts restrict access to certain directories; use the panel’s own path display to confirm that the files are in the server root’s mods and plugins folders.
How to add plugins without creating hard-to-diagnose failures
Install incrementally
Add one plugin, start the server, and test it before adding the next. This creates a clear checkpoint. If ten plugins are copied at once and startup fails, identifying the cause becomes much harder.
Read the plugin’s requirements
Check whether the plugin needs another plugin, a particular Bukkit or Paper API level, a database, or a specific Minecraft release. Cardboard can expose an API, but it cannot supply a missing plugin dependency or make a plugin’s native server assumptions disappear.

Keep plugin data with the backup
Many plugins create configuration, data, or permission files after their first successful launch. Include those files in backups. When removing a plugin for testing, move its JAR out of plugins/ first; keep its generated data until you know it is safe to delete.

- Cardboard is intended to run compatible Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins on Fabric.
- Compatibility is not universal. The project states that it remains in development and that compatibility with every mod or plugin is unknown.
- A plugin’s advertised support for Spigot or Paper does not prove it will work through Cardboard. Its use of internal server code, version-specific APIs, native networking, or assumptions about the original server implementation can prevent loading.
- Fabric mods and Cardboard plugins are different software types. A Fabric mod belongs in
mods/; a Bukkit-style plugin belongs inplugins/. - Compatibility depends on the complete version combination: Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Fabric API, Cardboard, iCommonLib, and the plugin itself.
There is no universal compatibility matrix established for every plugin. Treat a plugin as unverified until it starts cleanly and its important features work in a backup test environment.

The server stops before reaching the world
Check the first error in the console, not just the final shutdown message. Verify that the Minecraft release, Java runtime, Fabric Loader, Cardboard, Fabric API, and iCommonLib all target compatible versions. For Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer, confirm that the server is using Java 21 as recommended by Fabric. Remove the newest JAR you added, restore the backup if necessary, and start again. This isolates whether the failure is caused by Cardboard, a dependency, or another mod.
Cardboard does not load
- Confirm that the Cardboard JAR is directly inside
mods/, not insideplugins/or a nested directory. - Confirm that Fabric is actually the server software being launched.
- Check that Fabric API and iCommonLib are also directly inside
mods/. - Recheck the Cardboard support chart and replace a JAR built for a different Minecraft branch.
- Remove duplicate or older copies of the same dependency so the loader is not choosing between conflicting files.
The plugins/ folder is missing
Cardboard normally creates the folder during its first successful startup. If it does not appear, stop troubleshooting the plugin itself and inspect the first launch log for a Cardboard or dependency error. Once Cardboard loads successfully, stop the server and create the folder only if the project’s setup instructions for your branch permit it; a manually created folder cannot substitute for a Cardboard installation that failed to initialize.
A plugin is not detected
- Make sure the plugin JAR is directly in
plugins/and that the server was restarted after copying it. - Check the console for a missing dependency or an unsupported API/version message.
- Confirm that the file is a Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper plugin rather than a Fabric mod.
- Move the plugin out temporarily and start the server with only Cardboard and its required dependencies. If the server then starts, test that plugin alone before restoring others.
The plugin loads but a feature fails
Loading is not the same as full compatibility. Test commands, permissions, scheduled tasks, economy or database integrations, and any feature important to your community. If only one feature fails, check the plugin’s own logs and configuration before changing unrelated server files. Report or document the exact Minecraft, Fabric, Cardboard, dependency, and plugin versions when seeking help.
Two plugins or a mod conflict
Return to the last known-good backup, then add components one at a time. Keep the newest addition identified in your notes. A conflict may come from two plugins expecting different API behavior, a Fabric mod altering the same system, or duplicate libraries. Removing the most recently added component is a diagnostic step, not proof that it is permanently incompatible.
Self-hosted files versus a managed panel

Choose the workflow that gives you reliable access to backups, logs, and the files in both directories. The installation itself is not fundamentally different.
Updating Cardboard or changing Minecraft versions
- Stop the server and make a fresh backup of worlds, configurations,
mods/, andplugins/. - Read the Cardboard support chart for the destination Minecraft version and confirm that the branch is supported.
- Check the destination versions required by Fabric Loader, Fabric API, iCommonLib, and every important plugin.
- Replace the relevant JARs in
mods/as a set rather than mixing old and new dependency builds. - Start the server without adding new plugins. Resolve loader and dependency errors first.
- Test existing plugins in the backup copy. A Minecraft-version upgrade can break a plugin even if Cardboard itself starts.
- Only after the test succeeds should you apply the same changes to the live server.
Do not delete old backups when an update appears successful. Keep at least one backup from the last known-good combination until the new version has been used and tested for the features your players need.
Installation checklist
- Fabric server installed and launching successfully.
- Java version matched to the Minecraft release; Java 21 used for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer when following Fabric’s recommendation.
- Cardboard branch checked against the server’s exact Minecraft version.
- Matching Cardboard, Fabric API, and iCommonLib JARs placed directly in
mods/. - Backup created before changing files.
- First launch completed and
plugins/generated. - Server stopped before plugin JARs were copied.
- Each plugin placed directly in
plugins/and tested individually. - Console reviewed for dependency, version, and loading errors.
- Unsupported or untested plugins kept off the production server until verified in a backup copy.

Cardboard, Fabric, Fabric API, iCommonLib, and the plugin files are software downloads. No physical product is required for this installation. Your practical requirements are a Fabric-compatible server, access to its files or a hosting panel, the appropriate Java runtime, enough storage for the server and backups, and permission to stop and start the process.
