For the official Minecraft Java Launcher, open the game directory, open logs, and read latest.log. The default locations are %appdata%.minecraftlogslatest.log on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/logs/latest.log on macOS, and ~/.minecraft/logs/latest.log on Linux. Modded installations may use a different, per-instance directory. A crash report in crash-reports, Forge’s debug.log, or a JVM file named like hs_err_pidXXXXX.log may provide more useful evidence, depending on what failed.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Which Minecraft log file should you open?
Minecraft stores several diagnostic files, and each answers a different question. Start with the file that matches the failure rather than automatically sending every file in the folder.

The newest file is not always the correct file. If you relaunched several times after the failure, select the dated log whose timestamp covers the incident. Older logs end in .gz, which means they are compressed; many archive utilities can open them directly.
Find the official Java game directory
The path below applies to the standard Minecraft Java Launcher using its default game directory. If you changed the installation directory in the launcher, use that custom location instead.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Windows
- Press
Windows+Rto open the Run dialog. - Enter
%appdata%.minecraftand press Enter. - Open
logs, then openlatest.log.
The complete default path is %appdata%.minecraftlogslatest.log. If the Run command does not open the folder, paste %appdata%.minecraft into File Explorer’s address bar. Hidden folders do not need to be made visible when you use the environment-variable path.
macOS
- In Finder, choose Go in the menu bar, then Go to Folder….
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/minecraftand press Return. - Open
logs, thenlatest.log.
The default path is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/logs/latest.log. The Library folder in your home directory is normally hidden in Finder, so using Go to Folder… is more reliable than browsing manually.

Linux
- Open your file manager or a terminal.
- Go to
~/.minecraft. - Open
logs/latest.log.
The default path is ~/.minecraft/logs/latest.log. In a graphical file manager, press Ctrl+H if hidden files are not displayed. From a terminal, the file can be opened with your preferred text editor, for example less ~/.minecraft/logs/latest.log.
Locate logs for a modpack or another instance launcher
Instance-based launchers commonly give every profile its own game directory. In that arrangement, the log is not necessarily under the global .minecraft folder. Open the launcher, select the exact instance that failed, and use its Folder, Open folder, or similarly named control. Then open logs.
Always select the folder for the affected instance, not the launcher application’s installation folder and not another profile’s directory. Two instances can use different Minecraft versions, mod sets, Java runtimes, and log histories. Fabric’s troubleshooting documentation describes logs as living in the Minecraft instance directory, while its default paths apply to the official launcher.

- Open the instance’s folder from the launcher’s own control whenever possible.
- Check the modification time on
latest.logagainst the time you reproduced the problem. - If the instance has no
latest.log, launch it once, close it, and inspect the folder again. - For a launcher that supports multiple loader profiles, repeat the process for the profile that actually failed.
Understand latest.log and older compressed logs
latest.log is the current session log. It is plain text, so a normal text editor can open it. The file records startup, resource loading, world or server connections, mod initialization, warnings, errors, and shutdown events. It is the broadest first look at what Minecraft was doing before a symptom appeared.
Recommended Free Tools
When Minecraft creates a new session, older logs are renamed using the pattern yyyy-mm-dd_number.log.gz. The date identifies the session date and the number distinguishes multiple sessions on that date. If the problem occurred yesterday, opening today’s latest.log will not recover it; choose the dated archive that contains the relevant time.
Do not edit a log before sending it to a helper. Removing repeated lines can also remove the first warning, a mod identifier, or the stack-trace context needed to diagnose the issue. Keep an untouched copy and make a separate excerpt only when someone specifically asks for one.
Find Forge’s debug.log
Official Launcher with Forge
- Open the folder used by the Forge installation.
- Open the
logsdirectory. - Open
debug.log, choosing the newest file that covers the failure. - Check
crash-reportsas well if Minecraft closed with a crash screen or message.
Forge’s support guidance treats debug.log as especially useful when a failure does not produce a crash report. It contains more diagnostic detail than a normal session log and can reveal the mod or loading stage where startup stopped.
CurseForge instance
- Open the app’s Settings using the gear icon.
- Choose Minecraft.
- Enable Forge debug.log, then save the setting.
- Launch the affected modpack again and reproduce the problem.
- Return to the modpack, right-click it, and choose Open Folder.
- Open
logs/debug.login that instance folder.
CurseForge can leave Forge debug logging disabled by default. If you look for debug.log before enabling the option and relaunching, the file may be absent or incomplete. The relaunch is important: the setting cannot add details to a session that already ended.

Locate and choose a crash report
Minecraft writes crash reports separately from normal logs. Open the game or instance directory, then open crash-reports. A client report commonly has a name such as crash-2026-10-15_14.32.08-client.txt; a server report uses the same timestamp style with -server.txt. The exact date and time in the filename make it easier to match the report to a failed launch.
Open the newest report that was created at the time of the crash. Its first major section begins with ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----. Start with the stack trace beneath that heading. The stack trace usually identifies the code path where Minecraft stopped and often names a mod, mixin, renderer, resource, or Java class involved in the failure.
Continue into the system-details section when you need to compare the environment with the one you intended to run. It can show the operating system, Java version, Minecraft version, loader information, and memory allocated to the game. These details are essential when a mod requires a particular game or Java version.
A crash report complements, rather than replaces, latest.log. The report explains the terminating exception; the log can show the warnings and loading steps that led to it. When requesting help, provide both if the support instructions allow it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to do when Java crashes without a Minecraft report
If Minecraft disappears, the launcher reports a Java crash, and no new file appears in crash-reports, inspect the game or instance directory for a filename like hs_err_pidXXXXX.log. This is a JVM fatal-error file, not a normal Minecraft crash report. It can contain native-stack information, the Java runtime, operating-system details, loaded libraries, and the thread that triggered the fatal error.

Use the file whose timestamp matches the failed launch. If several exist, do not assume the largest or newest file belongs to the current incident; compare the timestamp and the process ID shown in the filename. Keep the complete file because the sections that look unrelated to Minecraft can identify a graphics driver, native library, or JVM problem.
Read a log in the right order
Long logs contain thousands of routine lines. A disciplined sequence prevents you from chasing the final symptom instead of the first cause.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Confirm the session. Near the beginning, identify the timestamp, Minecraft version, loader version, Java version, and instance or profile. Make sure the file belongs to the failed run.
- Jump to the failure window. Search for the approximate time when the game froze, closed, failed to connect, or displayed an error. Work backward a little; the first warning often precedes the visible failure.
- Search high-value terms. Use your editor’s search for
ERROR,Exception,Caused by:,Crash, and the suspected mod ID or package name. - Find the deepest cause. In a chain of exceptions, read the innermost or deepest
Caused by:line and the few lines immediately around it. Later errors may simply be cleanup failures after the original problem. - Compare the named component. Check the mod, Java runtime, loader, and Minecraft version against the configuration you meant to launch.
- Check what happened next. A line saying a subsystem stopped, a connection closed, or initialization was skipped can confirm whether the error was fatal or recovered automatically.
A single warning is not proof of the cause. Minecraft and mod loaders routinely log recoverable warnings. Give priority to an exception that appears immediately before the shutdown, a crash report’s stack trace, or an error that names a component whose version does not match the rest of the installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recognize common log patterns
Version or dependency mismatch
Look for wording that a mod requires another mod, a particular Minecraft version, or a minimum loader version. Compare the exact versions shown in the log with the files installed in the instance. Updating only one side of a dependency can replace one clear error with a different one, so record the original message before changing anything.
Wrong Java runtime
The log or crash report can expose the Java version. If a modpack expects a different Java major version than the launcher is using, startup may fail before a world opens. Verify the launcher’s Java setting and compare it with the requirement stated by the mod or pack author; do not infer the version from your operating system alone.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Memory and allocation problems
Search for terms such as OutOfMemoryError, allocation failures, or a crash report showing the allocated memory. The system-details section records the memory Minecraft received. Too little memory can prevent loading, while assigning an excessive amount can leave the operating system or other applications starved. Change one setting at a time and reproduce the same action.
Resource or asset failures
Messages naming a resource pack, texture, model, sound, or missing file point to content loading rather than necessarily to the last mod mentioned. Note the exact path and identifier. Temporarily removing the named resource from a copy of the instance can distinguish a broken asset from a broader loader problem.
Networking and authentication messages
Connection timeouts, authentication failures, and server disconnects can occur after the client has started successfully. In that case, the relevant lines are near the connection attempt, not at the top of the startup log. Include the server address only if it is safe to disclose it; redact account tokens, session identifiers, and private addresses before public sharing.
When there is no crash report
A missing crash report does not mean there is no evidence. Use latest.log for vanilla or Fabric-based clients and debug.log for Forge when available. A launcher may also record a short launcher log outside the game directory, but the client log remains the primary file for what Minecraft itself loaded and did.
- If the game never opens, inspect the final lines of the log and then search upward for the first exception.
- If it freezes, note the exact action and time, wait only long enough to confirm it is unresponsive, then close it and inspect the lines immediately before shutdown.
- If the launcher says the process exited with an error but the log stops during initialization, check the instance’s Java setting and look for an
hs_err_pidfile. - If the file is empty or was not updated, verify that you opened the correct instance folder and reproduced the problem after opening that folder.
Share logs without destroying useful context
Support volunteers and mod developers generally need the complete relevant file, not a handful of lines copied from the bottom. Preserve the original formatting and upload the file to a paste service such as mclo.gs, pastes.dev, Pastebin.com, or GitHub Gist, then send the resulting link according to the support forum’s rules.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

- Copy the original log or report to a safe location.
- Open the copy briefly to check for secrets such as access tokens, personal file paths, private server addresses, or account identifiers.
- Remove only sensitive values, leaving timestamps, exception text, mod IDs, versions, and surrounding lines intact.
- Upload the complete sanitized file and state which Minecraft version, loader, launcher instance, Java version, and action caused the failure.
Do not rename a crash report to make it look like a log, and do not convert a compressed .gz archive into a screenshot. Plain text preserves searchability and stack-trace formatting. If a helper asks for a specific file, send that file in addition to—not instead of—the broader log unless privacy rules require otherwise.
A practical diagnostic checklist
- Identify whether the problem is a normal runtime error, a Minecraft crash, or a JVM crash.
- Open the correct game or per-instance directory.
- Choose
latest.log, the matching dated.gzlog, Forgedebug.log, a crash report, orhs_err_pidXXXXX.logaccording to that failure mode. - Match the file timestamp to the failed session.
- Record the Minecraft version, loader, Java version, and memory shown in the file.
- Search for the first meaningful exception and follow its deepest
Caused by:line. - Compare every named mod or dependency with the versions installed in the intended instance.
- Share the complete, minimally redacted file in its original text format.
The shortest reliable workflow
For a standard Java installation, open the game directory, choose logs/latest.log, and search around the time of the failure. If Minecraft produced a crash report, read the stack trace in the newest file under crash-reports and use the system details to verify versions and memory. For Forge, enable and collect debug.log; for an instance launcher, open that instance’s own folder; for a Java-level failure with no Minecraft report, use the matching hs_err_pidXXXXX.log. Keeping the complete file and its context gives the person helping you the best chance of identifying the actual cause rather than the final cascade of errors.
