Before installing Etcher
Check your architecture before downloading a package:
uname -m
For the current Linux packages, the expected result is x86_64 or amd64. If the command returns aarch64, Etcher’s current Linux support statement does not list your system as supported.

Also check your distribution version. Etcher 2.0.0 and later are built on Ubuntu 22, and the newer glibc means current releases may not run on Ubuntu 20. Etcher 2.1.6 has the same reported limitation. Installing the package successfully does not overcome an incompatible system library.
Download Balena Etcher for Linux
- Open the Etcher releases page on GitHub.
- Open the latest release and locate the Linux assets.
- Choose the package matching your distribution: a
.debpackage for Debian or Ubuntu, or an.rpmpackage for Fedora, RHEL, and other RPM-based distributions.
For version 2.1.6, the relevant filenames are:
| System | File |
|---|---|
| Debian or Ubuntu | balena-etcher_2.1.6_amd64.deb |
| Fedora, RHEL, or another RPM distribution | balena-etcher-2.1.6-1.x86_64.rpm |
| Portable archive | balenaEtcher-linux-x64-2.1.6.zip |
Do not copy a command with asterisks literally unless you have replaced them with the exact downloaded filename. The release listing gives this SHA-256 value for the 2.1.6 Debian package:
2bdebb46c9f750a9abf11c188ff69a405b4a4fed114333d634c3b3fe59a64057
To verify that file after downloading it to your Downloads directory, run:
cd ~/Downloads
sha256sum balena-etcher_2.1.6_amd64.deb
Compare the output with the published value before installing.
Install Etcher on Debian or Ubuntu
The current official method is to install the downloaded local Debian package with APT. Open a terminal and change to the directory containing the download:
cd ~/Downloads
Then install it using the exact filename:
sudo apt install ./balena-etcher_2.1.6_amd64.deb
The ./ is important. It tells APT that the file is a local package rather than a package name to search for in configured repositories. APT resolves the package’s dependencies and asks for your password if required.
After installation, launch Etcher from your desktop application menu. You can also try launching it from a terminal with:

Install Etcher on Fedora or RHEL
Download the RPM from the Etcher GitHub release page, open a terminal, and enter the download directory:
cd ~/Downloads
The official documentation gives this installation command:
sudo yum localinstall balena-etcher-2.1.6-1.x86_64.rpm
Replace the filename with the version you actually downloaded. The current documentation refers to a Red Hat and Fedora-based package repository but does not provide a DNF-specific command, so do not assume that an unverified replacement command is appropriate for every RPM-based distribution.
Install Etcher on Arch or Manjaro
Etcher is available in the Arch User Repository. If you use the yay AUR helper, install it with:
yay -S balena-etcher
This builds the package through the AUR. yay is an example helper, not a requirement imposed by Etcher; another AUR helper can perform the same job.
To remove the AUR package later:
yay -R balena-etcher
Run the AppImage instead
An AppImage is useful when you do not want to install a distribution package, or when your distribution is not covered by the available packages. Download the AppImage from the project’s release page, then make it executable:
cd ~/Downloads
chmod +x Etcher-linux-*.AppImage
Run it with:
./Etcher-linux-*.AppImage
The project documents desktop integration for AppImages. Etcher may ask whether it should register a desktop shortcut. To skip integration for one launch, use:
SKIP=1 ./Etcher-linux-<arch>.AppImage
To disable AppImage desktop integration more generally, create one of these files:

Flash a Linux ISO with Etcher
Etcher’s workflow has three stages: select image, select drive, flash. The wording of individual buttons can vary by version, so use the image, drive, and flash controls presented by the installed application.
- Download the image. Save the Linux ISO or other disk-image file locally. If flashing from a URL fails, download the file first and select the local copy instead.
- Connect the USB drive or SD card. Close file-manager windows that have files open on the device.
- Start Etcher. Select the option for choosing an image and browse to the downloaded ISO or image file.
- Choose the target drive. Check the device name, capacity, and model carefully. Etcher hides system drives by default to reduce the chance of overwriting an internal disk, but you are still responsible for confirming the target.
- Start the flash. Confirm the warning. Etcher erases the entire selected drive and replaces its contents; any existing files on it will be lost.
- Wait for validation. Etcher verifies that the written data matches the source image. Do not remove the drive while writing or validation is in progress.
- Eject the drive. When Etcher reports completion, eject it through the desktop before physically unplugging it.
You do not need to format the USB drive or SD card first. Etcher writes the image directly and replaces the existing contents.

Etcher does not create persistent Linux live media
Etcher can write a Linux image to a USB drive, but it does not configure persistent storage. Changes made in a live session will not automatically survive a reboot. If persistence is a requirement, use a tool that explicitly supports it, such as UNetbootin.
Etcher is not the best choice for Windows installation media
Etcher writes images byte-for-byte without transforming them. A Windows image therefore does not become bootable through Etcher alone. For Windows USB media, use a Windows-focused tool such as Rufus, WoeUSB, or Microsoft’s Windows USB/DVD Download Tool.
Fix common Etcher problems on Linux
“No polkit authentication agent found”
Etcher needs a polkit authentication agent to show the secure password prompt used for privileged operations. This error usually means that your desktop session does not have a working polkit agent.
Log in to a complete desktop session, ensure the distribution’s polkit authentication-agent package is installed, and restart the session. Minimal window-manager setups commonly need the agent to be installed and started separately. Running Etcher with sudo is not a substitute for fixing the authentication agent and is best avoided.

This is likely a compatibility issue rather than a bad installation command. The flash fails
A faulty USB drive, SD card, adapter, or USB port is a common cause. Retry once, then test the following:
- Another USB port, preferably a direct port rather than a hub.
- Another adapter or card reader.
- A different USB drive or SD card.
Also confirm that the downloaded image is complete and that you selected the intended target. If the image was supplied through a URL, download it locally and flash the local file.
The drive looks unusable after a failed flash
An interrupted or failed image write can leave the device with partition data that your file manager does not recognize. Graphical formatting tools may refuse to restore it. The project’s troubleshooting documentation includes destructive drive-reset procedures for this situation. Follow those procedures only after confirming the device path, because resetting the wrong path can erase an internal disk.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Ubuntu or a partitioning tool shows GPT or block-size warnings
Ubuntu ISO images can produce warnings about GPT signatures, fake MBR tables, or a physical block size of 2048 bytes compared with Linux’s 512-byte value. Etcher’s documentation says these warnings are safe to ignore and should not prevent the written drive from booting.
Etcher behaves badly under Wayland
Etcher can run under Wayland through XWayland. This normally works on mainstream distributions with proper Wayland support. If it does not, the project documentation notes that the xwayland.so module may need to be enabled in weston.ini.
Remove Etcher
On Debian or Ubuntu, remove the installed package with:
sudo apt remove balena-etcher
This removes the application package while leaving normal user configuration files unless your package manager reports otherwise.

What to include when asking for support
If Etcher still fails, collect the version, operating system and desktop environment, the image type, and the exact error. Etcher’s DevTools window can be opened with:
Ctrl+Shift+I
Include relevant logs from that window when reporting the problem. Do not post passwords, tokens, or unrelated personal data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFAQ
Is Balena Etcher available for Linux ARM?
The current support statement lists Linux for most distributions on Intel 64-bit systems. Linux ARM builds are not listed among the supported operating systems.
Do I need to format a USB drive before using Etcher?
No. Etcher erases the selected drive and writes the image directly. Formatting it first is unnecessary.
Why does the Etcher installation command use ./ before the .deb filename?
The prefix identifies the file as a local package path. Without ./, APT may interpret the value as a repository package name instead of the downloaded file.
Can Etcher make a persistent Linux USB?
No. Etcher writes the image but does not configure persistent storage. Use a tool that explicitly supports persistence when you need saved files and settings between live sessions.
Can I use Etcher to create a bootable Windows USB?
Etcher writes images byte-for-byte and does not apply the Windows-specific transformations sometimes required for bootable Windows media. Use Rufus, WoeUSB, or Microsoft’s Windows USB/DVD Download Tool instead.
What should I do if Etcher says no polkit authentication agent was found?
Install or enable a polkit authentication agent for your desktop session, then restart the session. This is especially common with minimal window-manager setups.
The Bottom Line
For most Intel 64-bit Linux systems, download the current package from Etcher’s GitHub releases page and install the format that matches your distribution: sudo apt install ./filename.deb for Debian or Ubuntu, the documented sudo yum localinstall filename.rpm command for Fedora or RHEL, or yay -S balena-etcher on Arch-based systems. Before flashing, verify the target drive by its model and capacity: Etcher replaces everything on it.
